"Okay," Sebastian coughed, spitting another wad of blood onto the floor. "Step one complete. Don’t die in the hallway."

He unzipped his ruined, blood-soaked black leather coat with his trembling right hand. He reached into the inner pocket and pulled out the golden crystal.

The sphere was almost uncomfortably hot to the touch. It pulsed with a frantic, erratic heartbeat, the pure Earth-mana swirling violently inside the hard-light shell. It was acting like a pressure cooker.

In the Ethereal Plane, the magical stasis pocket would have held forever. But here, in the base reality of the Hardware Level, magic was actively being rejected by the environment. The crystal couldn’t sustain its condensed form.

"Come on, Seattle," Sebastian whispered, placing the glowing orb gently onto the stone floor in front of him. "Time to wake up."

The moment the crystal touched the cold stone, the hard-light shell cracked.

*CRACK-POP!*

A blinding flash of warm, golden light illuminated the dingy maintenance room. Sebastian had to throw his arm over his face to shield his eyes.

When the light faded, the crystal was gone.

Lying on the dirty stone floor, gasping desperately for air, was Valerie.

"HAAAH!" she choked, rolling violently onto her side.

She was covered in soot, dried blood, and sweat. Her practical mechanic’s overalls were charred black at the edges. But miraculously, her legs were fully intact. The infinite mana of the Sanctuary Core had forcefully rebuilt her missing limbs right before condensing her into the crystal. She was bruised, battered, and utterly exhausted, but she was whole.

"Valerie," Sebastian breathed, pushing himself forward on his knees despite the screaming pain in his ribs.

She coughed, spitting a mixture of saliva and dust onto the stone. She slowly pushed herself up onto her hands and knees, her chest heaving. She looked around the cramped, flickering maintenance room, her wide blue eyes entirely devoid of their usual glowing astral magic.

"Where..." Valerie wheezed, her voice raspy and dry. "Where the hell are we? The last thing I remember... I was falling through the void."

"We’re in the basement of the universe," Sebastian said, offering a weak, lopsided smile. "Welcome to the Motherboard, Princess. The magic is turned off."

Valerie slowly turned her head and looked at him. Her eyes widened in absolute shock.

Sebastian looked like absolute shit. His featureless black helmet was gone. His face was pale, covered in grease, sweat, and bright red blood. His left arm hung at a completely unnatural angle, and a massive pool of blood was actively expanding around his right thigh.

The towering, terrifying glitch god was gone. He was just a deeply wounded man.

"You look like a dropped pie," Valerie whispered, crawling over to him.

"I feel like a dropped pie," Sebastian grunted, leaning back against the wall. "The reality anchor in this place completely suppressed the UI. We’re running entirely on hardware right now. If you get cut, you bleed. If you break a bone, it stays broken."

*BZZZT.*

A faint, heavily corrupted gray system prompt flickered weakly in the air between them before dying completely.

`[Hardware Level Diagnostics: Unrecognized Biological Entities. Signal Terminated.]`

"No magic," Valerie muttered, staring at her own hands. She tried to summon a spark of Earth-mana, but absolutely nothing happened. She was just as mortal as he was.

She didn’t panic. The corporate heiress had managed a guild through an apocalypse. She shifted instantly into crisis management mode.

"You’re bleeding out, Seattle," Valerie said, her voice sharpening with authority. She looked around the dingy room. Her eyes landed on a rusted metal cabinet mounted to the wall above the desk. "Stay still. Do not move."

She forced herself to stand up. Her legs wobbled violently, but she locked her knees and grabbed the edge of the desk for support. She reached up and yanked the cabinet doors open.

Inside were various rusted tools, oily rags, and a heavy, red industrial first-aid box.

"Score," Valerie breathed.

She pulled the heavy metal box down and dropped to her knees beside Sebastian. She popped the latches. Inside were thick rolls of industrial gauze, a heavy suturing needle with thick nylon thread, and a tube of what looked like industrial-grade superglue.

"Okay, this is going to be incredibly unpleasant," Valerie warned, ripping open a packet of alcohol-soaked chemical wipes.

"It can’t be worse than watching a Level 100 boss try to flatten me with a hammer," Sebastian sighed, resting his head back.

Valerie grabbed a pair of heavy shears from the kit and violently cut away the torn, blood-soaked fabric of his tactical trousers around his thigh. The gash was deep, cutting straight into the thick, dense muscle.

She didn’t hesitate. She pressed the stinging alcohol wipe directly into the open wound.

"FUCK!" Sebastian roared, his entire body jerking upward. His right hand clamped onto her shoulder in a vice grip. "Jesus Christ, Valerie! Are you trying to clean it or set it on fire?!"

"Shut up and hold still, you big baby," Valerie snapped, though her hands were remarkably gentle. "You literally let a planetary wave of deletion chew on your face for ten minutes, but a wet wipe is where you draw the line?"

"The deletion wave didn’t sting," he hissed through clenched teeth.

Valerie quickly threaded the heavy suturing needle. The lighting was terrible, the yellow bulb flickering wildly, but she focused entirely on the wound.

"I don’t have painkillers," she said softly, her blue eyes meeting his. "Bite down on your collar."

Sebastian grabbed the thick leather collar of his coat in his teeth and bit down hard.

*SHHHK.*

Valerie drove the thick needle through his skin. It was brutal, gritty, and incredibly intimate. In the dark, greasy belly of the universe’s engine room, the Guild Master painstakingly sewed her frontline fighter back together.

Sebastian groaned into the leather, sweat pouring down his face. Every time the needle pierced his dense, biologically altered skin, it required Valerie to push with all her strength.

"Almost done," Valerie whispered, her own hands trembling from exhaustion. She tied off the final knot and grabbed the tube of industrial superglue. She smeared it aggressively over the stitches to seal the wound shut against the grime of the facility.

She grabbed a roll of heavy gauze and wrapped it tightly around his thigh, tying it off with a sharp pull.

Sebastian spit his collar out, letting out a long, ragged breath. "Remind me to never hire you as a nurse. Your bedside manner is terrible."

"You get what you pay for," Valerie retorted, wiping her bloody hands on a relatively clean rag.

She shifted closer to him in the cramped space. She looked at his pulverized, swollen right hand. The knuckles were split wide open from where he had literally beaten the Tartarus Warden to death. She gently took his bruised hand in hers, being incredibly careful not to squeeze the broken skin.

She leaned down and pressed a soft, lingering kiss directly against his bloody, ruined knuckles.

Sebastian went entirely still. The sarcastic, cynical walls he constantly threw up completely dissolved in the quiet, dim light of the maintenance closet.

"We’re mortal again," Valerie whispered, resting her forehead against his chest, listening to his actual, thumping heartbeat.

"Good," Sebastian murmured, wrapping his good arm around her and pulling her tight against his side. He rested his chin on the top of her soot-covered head. "I was getting really tired of being a giant Wi-Fi router. The hours sucked."

They sat there in the dark for a long time, drawing strength from the simple, undeniably human fact that they were both still breathing.

But the rhythmic, deafening grinding of the massive gears outside the door was a constant reminder that the job wasn’t finished.

"The Prime Architects," Valerie finally said, her voice returning to its sharp, tactical edge. She pulled back slightly to look at him. "Are they in this facility?"

"Yeah," Sebastian nodded, his silver-tinged eyes hardening into cold slits. "They’re at the end of the hall. But this place is a fortress. If the Sentinels outside are any indication, management isn’t just going to let us walk into their office."

He reached out with his good hand and grabbed the shaft of the bloody brass halberd resting on the floor. He used it to slowly, painfully lever himself up to his feet. He tested his weight on the stitched leg. It burned like hell, but it held.

"We’re going to have to do this the hard way, Princess," Sebastian growled, handing her a heavy, rusted iron pipe he had spotted in the corner of the room. "No magic. No glitches. Just pure, unadulterated guerilla warfare in the halls of the gods."

Valerie gripped the iron pipe, testing its weight. A fierce, predatory smile touched her lips.

"Lead the way, Seattle. Let’s go fire the board of directors."

The Motherboard was not designed for stealth. It was a sprawling, brutalist mega-structure of dark stone and tarnished brass, echoing constantly with the deafening roar of city-sized iron gears grinding against one another.

*SCREEECH... CLUNK... WHRRRR.*

Sebastian and Valerie slipped out of the maintenance closet, instantly swallowed by the heavy, oil-choked shadows of the corridor.
