Chapter 155 - 115: Yaoyao Watches from the Shadows
The meal was four dishes and a soup, a well-balanced spread of meat and vegetables that looked, smelled, and tasted incredible.
Chen Lin, Shen Yan, Sun Yu, and Huang Yiyi sat together, eating with hearty satisfaction.
Once everyone had finished eating, Yunqing swiftly gathered all the lunch containers and trash. She wiped the table down with a wet wipe until it was spotless, then pushed all the chairs back into place.
The entire process was as smooth as flowing water, her efficiency shockingly high.
"So, was everyone satisfied?" Yunqing asked, brushing a stray strand of hair from her temple. An expectant smile played on her lips as she sought their feedback.
"Satisfied! More than satisfied!" Sun Yu exclaimed, the first to give a thumbs-up.
Huang Yiyi and Shen Yan also nodded in agreement, indicating that they’d had an excellent lunch experience.
"Great!" Yunqing clapped her hands happily and announced on the spot, "From now on, I’ll be in charge of arranging our company lunches just like this!"
They had just finished with lunch, and before Chen Lin could even suggest she take a break, Yunqing was already back at her workstation, tapping away at her phone.
A moment later, a location share popped up in the "Yanhai Startup Squad" WeChat group.
Yunqing: [Everyone! I’ve already booked the place for tonight’s celebration dinner! 🎉]
Chen Lin curiously tapped it open. It was a high-end Cantonese restaurant with stellar ratings on a review app. The decor was antique and elegant, giving it a very classy vibe.
He nodded in satisfaction, praising her choice internally.
’A good choice. I’m not sure who on the team can handle spicy food, so picking Cantonese cuisine, with its milder flavors suitable for everyone, is the safest bet.’
Yunqing’s voice chimed in at his ear, laced with a playful tease. "The food at this place has amazing reviews. The price, on the other hand... is a tiny bit steep. Looks like our President Chen will have to splurge big time tonight!"
"No problem." A corner of Chen Lin’s mouth lifted into the calm, confident smile of a CEO.
’Are you kidding me? I’m a hidden tycoon now, with a net worth of over 25 million and a stable monthly income of more than 5 million.’
’Treating the founding members who are working so hard to help me build this company to a nice meal... isn’t that the least I could do?’
’I’m not even thinking about expensing this meal. This one’s on me, out of my own pocket!’
「As evening fell and the city lights began to glow.」
The group of five took two rideshare cars and arrived at the high-end Cantonese restaurant Yunqing had booked.
The restaurant was situated on an old street that was an oasis of calm in the bustling city. Its facade was a traditional Chinese archway with upturned eaves, adorned with two warm red lanterns, exuding the refined air of a hidden gem.
A server led them through an elegant courtyard to their private dining room.
Inside, a dark rosewood table and matching chairs lent the room a stately air. A freestyle landscape painting hung on the wall, and from an incense burner in the corner, a faint, almost imperceptible wisp of sandalwood smoke curled into the air. The atmosphere was one of utter tranquility.
As they took their seats, a subtle scene unfolded.
Sun Yu had intended to sit next to Chen Lin, thinking it a good opportunity to report on his work and build rapport with the boss, but Huang Yiyi, who was beside him, discreetly stopped him with a look.
He froze for a second, then the realization dawned on him. He immediately pulled out a chair furthest from Chen Lin, plopped down, and conveniently saved the adjacent seat for Huang Yiyi.
Huang Yiyi nodded in satisfaction and gracefully took her seat.
And so, thanks to the unspoken, perfectly coordinated efforts of his two "wingmen," Chen Lin was naturally maneuvered into the seat of honor.
To his left was Shen Yan, who had changed back into her everyday clothes and radiated a pure, serene aura.
To his right was Yunqing, dressed in a sharp business outfit that made her look dazzling and vibrant.
"..."
Chen Lin could smell the distinct, faint fragrances wafting from both his left and right. Outwardly, he remained impassive, but inwardly, he was already ranting up a storm.
’Holy cow!’
’These two subordinates of mine are really something else, always creating opportunities for me. But could they maybe ask if I want them first?!’
To say Chen Lin was in a predicament now would be a bit of an understatement.
But to say he was unhappy about it would be an absolute lie.
’This kind of prestige, this treatment... it’s just incredible!’
Soon, the signature dishes Yunqing had ordered began to arrive.
There was White Cut Chicken, with its smooth skin and tender meat, served with a dipping sauce of minced ginger and soy.
Sizzling eel served in a scorching hot clay pot, still CRACKLING and releasing an intoxicating aroma as it hit the table.
Beef Chow Fun, imbued with rich *wok hei*, each noodle evenly coated in a savory, dark sauce.
Roasted squab with crispy skin and succulent meat, so fragrant that even the bones were savory.
And finally, a pot of Pork Stomach and Chicken Soup, with a creamy, milky-white broth and a rich, peppery flavor.
"Come on, everyone, don’t stand on ceremony. Dig in!" Chen Lin urged warmly, playing the part of the host.
Everyone was indeed hungry, and they all picked up their chopsticks. For a while, the only sounds in the room were quiet chewing and sincere murmurs of appreciation.
After a few rounds of drinks and several courses, the atmosphere grew lively and warm.
Just then, Yunqing set down her chopsticks. Her large, bright eyes blinked as she looked at Chen Lin, and with a playful grin, she asked, as if for confirmation, "Boss, how was my performance today? If I do well during my internship, you’ll offer me a full-time position when I graduate, right?"
"COUGH! COUGH COUGH..."
Chen Lin had just picked up a piece of eel and was about to eat it when her direct question caught him completely off guard. He nearly choked on his food.
After finally catching his breath, he looked at Yunqing’s innocent expression, not knowing whether to laugh or cry. "Well..." he said, exasperated. "The company was just founded. I don’t think we’ve established rules that detailed yet."
When he and Shen Yan had first discussed things, they hadn’t even considered intern evaluations. The default assumption was that once Shen Yan graduated, she would automatically become a full-time, founding member of the company.
