Chapter 213 - 161: Condensed Matter Mathematics
As Chen Lin continued his presentation, the PowerPoint slides advanced one after another.
The mathematical formulas and derivation processes, so complex they would make an ordinary person’s head spin at a single glance, flowed from his lips as naturally and smoothly as breathing.
For him, of course, these proofs and calculations were effortless.
But to accommodate the students in the audience who might have a weaker foundation, he deliberately slowed his pace, explaining each key step in meticulous detail and avoiding major logical leaps.
Of course, to finish within the allotted time, the overall pace was still incredibly fast.
Time ticked by, second by second.
The audience gradually fell silent.
Forty minutes later, when Chen Lin advanced to the final slide and concluded his presentation, only a sparse, scattered applause broke the silence.
Chen Lin glanced up and saw that the applause came mostly from the few people he knew: Shen Yan, Qiu Chengtong, Schultz, and Academician Liang.
The vast majority of the audience, however, were frowning, their heads bowed as they frantically flipped through their notes. Their faces were etched with confusion and deep thought, as if they still hadn’t recovered from the intense deluge of information.
Without a change in expression, Chen Lin activated the super-hearing of his Little Champion skill, and the whispers filling the auditorium instantly flooded his ears.
"...I can’t. I’m completely lost. I zoned out around the twenty-minute mark..."
"Same here. How did he derive that lemma on ’boundary curvature control under a Riemann metric’? It felt like he skipped too many steps..."
"His reasoning is all over the place. It feels like he skipped the intermediate steps in so many places. How are we supposed to follow that...?"
Hearing these comments, Chen Lin immediately understood.
’Well, it seems I went too fast after all.’
Steps that were simple for him would likely take most of the audience several days to digest and fully understand.
Still, Chen Lin wasn’t particularly concerned.
The entire presentation was being recorded, anyway. Anyone genuinely interested in a deep dive could rewatch the video dozens of times and eventually grasp the value of his work.
So, sticking to his plan, he smiled and said, "That concludes my presentation. We have about fifteen minutes for questions and discussion."
The words had barely left his mouth when a hand shot up in the front row.
Instantly, every eye in the auditorium snapped to the source.
When the audience saw who it was, several other scholars who had been about to ask questions quietly and discreetly lowered their hands.
A young volunteer reacted in a flash, quickly jogging over to hand the person a wireless microphone.
Professor Qiu Chengtong slowly rose to his feet. He didn’t ask a question right away. Instead, he first surveyed the entire room and, in a resonant voice, proposed, "Before we begin the Q&A, I suggest we all give Chen Lin another round of thunderous applause for his absolutely brilliant presentation!"
The room was silent for a beat, and then, a thunderous ovation erupted.
This time, it wasn’t scattered. It was a deafening, unceasing roar, like a tidal wave.
The students and scholars who had been feeling lost and confused finally understood what was happening.
If even Professor Qiu Chengtong was giving it such high praise, it didn’t mean there was a problem with the presentation. It meant their own understanding was simply not on the level required to follow the speaker’s train of thought!
The applause continued for a good ten seconds before finally subsiding.
Only then did Professor Qiu Chengtong continue. "I know that for many of you here, the content of this presentation may have been exceedingly difficult to follow.
However, I can say without any exaggeration that of all the lectures at this mathematics conference, this is by far the most valuable and exhilarating one I have personally witnessed!"
He looked at Chen Lin, who stood calmly on the stage, his eyes filled with undisguised admiration and awe.
"Chen Lin’s research on ’The Boundaries of Manifolds in Differential Geometry and the Control of Hallucinations in Generative Models’ has reached a profound, and I would even say, groundbreaking stage!
The results he presented today are of immense referential value and inspiration to everyone in the field of artificial intelligence algorithms, and even to researchers in the broader field of applied mathematics!"
"I have every reason to believe," Qiu Chengtong’s voice rang with conviction, "that when the recording of this presentation is made public, the entire academic world will be shaken!
People will study every detail of it again and again, and they will ultimately recognize the value of Chen Lin’s work here today!"
As he finished speaking, the auditorium erupted once more, the applause several times more fervent than before.
From the stage, Chen Lin first caught Professor Qiu Chengtong’s eye, offering a silent, grateful nod for helping to rekindle the room’s energy.
Then, his gaze shifted to the other side, where he saw Academician Liang Tianshi looking at him with a gratified expression and nodding slowly. Chen Lin returned the gesture with a respectful nod of his own.
The applause in the hall gradually died down, but a fervent atmosphere of shock and admiration still lingered in the air.
Just then, Chen Lin saw Peter Schultz in the front row raise his hand again.
He immediately gestured to a nearby volunteer.
The quick-witted young woman understood instantly, jogging over to hand the microphone to Schultz.
