Inside a spacious and bright office, Academician Liang Tianshi lifted his teacup and took a gentle sip. He had just seen off an old friend who held a leadership position at the Science Academy.
He had just sat down when his secretary knocked and entered.
"Elder Liang, you have a phone call."
"Who is it?" Liang Tianshi asked.
"It’s Chang Kai from Yannan University, Principal Chang."
Upon hearing this, Liang Tianshi’s eyebrows raised slightly. He recalled the matter he had asked the other party to look into a while back. He took the phone from his secretary.
"Hello, Elder Liang! I hope I’m not disturbing you?" Chang Kai’s voice, enthusiastic yet laced with reverence, came immediately from the receiver.
"Ah, Principal Chang, hello," Liang Tianshi smiled. "What can I do for you?"
"Elder Liang, it’s like this," Chang Kai said deferentially. "You called earlier and asked me to keep an eye out for any exceptionally brilliant mathematics geniuses among our freshmen or sophomores. I’ve looked into it and am calling to give you an update."
Liang Tianshi’s interest was piqued, and he sat up a little straighter.
Chang Kai continued on the other end of the line, "In our university’s mathematics department, there’s a sophomore named Shen Yan. According to her professors, this young woman is incredibly focused and dedicated to mathematics, and her talent is immense. Her grades in her major courses are consistently near-perfect. "There is," Chang Kai said, a hint of pride in his voice. "Shen Yan isn’t just good at theory; her practical skills are also excellent. The mathematical modeling team she leads submitted a paper of exceptionally high quality a while back, and they’ve already advanced to the regional defense round on July 7th. According to their advisor, winning a National First Prize is practically a sure thing, and they have a real shot at the final national grand prize."
"Oh?" Liang Tianshi pressed. "So they’ll be attending the final in-person networking event and award ceremony?"
Chang Kai answered immediately, "Yes. There will be an in-person event and award ceremony in the Imperial Capital on July 14th, at Huaqing University."
At this point, Chang Kai’s tone shifted, becoming both probing and deferential. "Elder Liang, I was wondering if you might have time then? Would Yannan University have the honor of listing you as a special guest to attend this event? It would also give a student like Shen Yan the opportunity to receive a word or two of guidance from a titan of the mathematics world like yourself."
Hearing this, Liang Tianshi couldn’t help but burst into laughter.
"Principal Chang, you’re a step too late with that news."
Chang Kai was clearly taken aback on the other end of the line.
Liang Tianshi chuckled. "I’ve already been invited by the organizing committee to be one of the judges for this event. I’ll be there to help select the final award winners."
As expected of a smooth operator, Chang Kai’s reaction was swift. After a brief moment of astonishment, he immediately seized the opportunity, his voice filled with pleasant surprise. "Well now! What a coincidence! This must mean that Shen Yan is fated to meet you!"
