Chapter 2231 - 1599: Cuba Strategy, Part 1 – Luring the Enemy into an Ambush? (2)
"Right!"
The High Priest Tomate lowered his eyes, rubbing his brow in distress. After a long while, he began to speak, but he did not look at Shoumaoying.
"Do you think this is feasible?"
"Huitzilopo Demon bears witness! I think it’s not feasible."
Once the scholar Martin Behaim, now Chief God Priest Adin, shook his head, donned in a black robe, stepping out from the shadows of the temple. On his forehead was carved a vivid hummingbird, and even on his arms, there were strange Chief Divine symbols.
This image of a heretic and fallen person had no retreat, no way back to the Catholic world. What’s more, he had long established a home on Cuba Island, married a local tribal wife, and even became the "Devil’s Priest." Even without all this, a court scholar from Shenluo born in the Portuguese Court, dealing with the Castilian Expeditionary Army, had absolutely no psychological burden.
"According to Shoumaoying’s description, a dozen large ships have come, among them at least four or five Clark Galleons. The Castilians’ level of ocean navigation is average, but in terms of fleet armament, they spare no effort. Their gun numbers are generally many, especially the Clark Galleons, which can carry several 8-pound, 10-pound heavy naval guns!"
Saying this, Priest Adin paused, pointing to the small guard fort at Iron Bay Town’s port. The only 8-pound cannon in Cuba was placed there.
"Archbishop Tomate, Bishop Shoumaoying, we have tested the power of the 8-pound cannon ourselves. It’s impossible for oar-sailed longships’ defenses to hold! If our expeditionary navy, laden with Samurai, encounters the main force of the Castilian fleet midway... apart from the three light sailing ships, the other oar-sailed longships won’t escape, nor will the Samurai they transport!"
"Naval warfare isn’t like land warfare; it’s about the bigger ships, faster sails, and more cannons! Unless it’s a night raid, or the enemy’s main force is trapped in a narrow lagoon... otherwise, we can’t even catch up with them, let alone win!"
"You mean... if a naval battle happens, we’re bound to lose?"
"...As a scholar, I seldom use absolute terms like that. But in terms of probability, our chance of defeat is over eighty percent... and the only twenty percent of victory is if the enemy splits their fleet, underestimates us, falls into terrain disadvantages, or we successfully ambush them at night and set their ships on fire!"
Priest Adin took out a charcoal pencil, writing down all these potential possibilities on a wooden board. Tomate and Shoumaoying exchanged a glance, then spoke simultaneously.
"With the Chief Divine as witness, we should send a squad of Samurai to ambush and harass the Evil Demons on Brave Island and prevent them from establishing a foothold."
"Chief Divine bless! Tomate Chief Priest, I have a plan to lure and ambush the Evil Demon Fleet, at the north of West Haiti!"
Upon hearing each other’s proposals, both paused. Tomate pondered for a moment and then smiled.
"Shoumaoying Chief Priest, you go first!"
"Tomate Chief Priest, here’s what I think... we really have no clear idea of the number of ships these white-skinned demons have, or their scale of warriors. Do they have reinforcements, or are they carrying the plague? So, the key now is still to capture a bunch of Evil Demons, interrogate them for accurate intelligence, and then make an overall response! That’s why I thought of an ambush location that could force the Evil Demons into a boarding battle..."
"Come over... we’ll discuss it over the sand table!"
Tomate made a gesture, walking into a side hall of the temple, followed by Adin and Shoumaoying. Adin smiled, while Shoumaoying’s eyes widened.
In the center of the side hall stood a crude sand table of the East Sea Island! Although the shape and position of the island wasn’t entirely accurate, the general situation was well aligned. This was the result of the Kingdom Fleet’s diligent cartography, not without Adin’s scholarly support. After all, he had once created the first globe, making geography and cartography his good expertise!
"Here! This corner northwest of Haiti Island, opposite lies an island. Between the island and the corner is a gorge over ten miles wide..."
Shoumaoying put away his surprise, pointed to the northwest of Haiti Island, where a narrow bay sandwiched between an offshore island and the coast.
"Chief Divine as witness! This is the northern coast of Haiti, the most suitable place for an ambush, in the gorge! To the north is an offshore island, to the south is a rugged coast. In the middle lagoon area, there are tribal small boats and the Kingdom Fleet that can lie in wait to ambush. If we can dispatch a light sailing ship and lure part of the Evil Demon’s fleet into this ten-mile-wide gorge... then the Kingdom’s oar-sail ships can emerge from the front and back to intercept them!"
"Then the Evil Demons’ advantage of ship speed will be fully negated, and they cannot move into deep waters! They will have to engage in a boarding battle with our oar-sail ships!"
"And if what’s lured out is the main body of the Evil Demons’ ships, carrying their armored main force... then sending out the prepared Taino small boats, carrying fire oil jars to set fires, or just launching fire ships for collision! Brother... Your Majesty mentioned to me before, to defeat big ships with small boats in direct confrontation, the only feasible way is to rely on numerical superiority to set fires... this strategy must take place in a special terrain, catching the enemy off-guard to succeed!..."
