The group left Wolfrine soon after the guards finished preparing.

Rylan rode at the front with Anaria beside him, while Kenai, Kai and several beast guards followed behind. Varek was taken along to show them the way to the old hunting camp.

The journey toward the northern forest was quiet. The farther they travelled, the more damaged the land became. The trees grew thinner, and patches of darkened ground appeared between them.

Eventually, Varek pointed ahead.

"That way."

They followed the narrow path until the old hunting camp came into view.

Several beastmen were gathered around a small fire.

One of them noticed the approaching group and immediately shouted a warning.

Zane stepped out of the shelter.

His eyes widened when he saw Rylan.

"You found me."

Rylan dismounted.

"You left me with no choice."

Zane gave a short laugh before turning as if to run.

He barely made it a few steps before two guards caught him.

Zane fought back immediately, but his movements were weak. One guard grabbed his arm while another held him from behind.

"Let me go!"

He struggled violently, but he couldn’t break free.

Rylan watched him carefully.

Zane suddenly laughed again.

"You really think this will help?"

Rylan frowned.

"Help what?"

"You think capturing me will stop this?"

Zane’s breathing became uneven.

"The corruption won’t disappear just because you’ve caught me."

Anaria’s expression changed.

Zane continued struggling against the guards.

"You should be preparing yourself, Rylan. You won’t rule peacefully. I won’t allow it."

His voice became strained as he suddenly pressed a hand against his chest.

Something seemed to move beneath his skin.

Zane gritted his teeth.

One of the guards tightened his grip.

"Hold him."

Zane tried to fight again, but his strength failed him.

Rylan stepped closer.

"What happened to you?"

Zane looked at him for a moment before laughing bitterly.

"You really don’t know."

"No."

Rylan’s voice was firm.

"I wasn’t here when all of this happened."

Zane’s expression changed.

For the first time, the amusement disappeared.

"You left."

Rylan said nothing.

Zane looked away.

"When I went to the northern territory, I thought I could strengthen Wolfrine. There were resources there, but the land was already polluted. The beastmen who lived around it were sick, and something had changed in the area."

He paused as another wave of pain passed through him.

"We went farther into the territory. We were attacked."

"By what?" Rylan asked.

Zane shook his head.

"I don’t know."

His breathing became heavier.

"It wasn’t like ordinary beasts. They were corrupted. Some of my men died immediately. Others were injured."

Anaria listened silently.

Zane continued.

"I was wounded too."

Rylan looked at him.

"You never told anyone."

"Because I couldn’t."

Zane’s jaw tightened.

"I realized something was inside the wound. Something was spreading through my body. I hid it because I knew what would happen if Wolfrine found out."

"You were already infected when you returned?"

"Yes."

Zane lowered his head.

"I managed to suppress it. For a while."

Rylan stared at him.

"And the powder?"

Zane looked toward the forest.

"It came from that place."

He explained that after discovering the strange substance, he had taken some of it back with him. He had believed it could be used to weaken his enemies.

"But when I realized what it could do, I knew I could use it against anyone who stood against me."

Rylan’s expression darkened.

"Even your own people?"

Zane laughed bitterly.

"After I lost the challenge, what did you expect me to do?"

Rylan stared at him.

"You spread it through the settlements."

"I wanted Wolfrine to suffer."

The words came without hesitation.

"If I couldn’t keep it, neither would you."

Anaria’s face hardened.

She had expected Zane to be dangerous.

But hearing him speak so casually about innocent people made her disgusted.

Zane looked at Rylan.

"I planned to use the powder on you during the challenge. I wanted you weakened before you could defeat me."

Rylan’s hands tightened.

"You tried to infect me."

"I tried to win."

"You were willing to infect everyone around you just to keep the throne."

Zane laughed weakly.

"And you think you’re different?"

Rylan stepped closer.

"I’ll skin you alive myself if that’s what it takes to make sure innocent people stay safe."

Zane’s expression immediately changed.

"You—"

Before he could finish, Rylan looked toward the guards.

"Enough."

One of the beast guards stepped forward and struck Zane across the head with a wooden stick.

Zane’s body went limp.

The guards caught him before he fell completely.

"Bind him properly," Rylan ordered.

The guards secured his hands and legs.

Anaria remained silent as she watched.

Zane’s confession had answered several questions, but it had also created more.

The corruption was not simply spreading on its own.

Zane had deliberately carried the substance into the settlements.

And now they had him.

Rylan looked at Zane’s unconscious body.

For a moment, he simply stood there.

He had spent years believing his brother had taken everything from him because of their rivalry over Wolfrine. He had never known what happened after he left.

Now he was hearing the truth for the first time.

Zane had gone into the northern territory.

His people had died there.

He had returned wounded and infected.

And instead of seeking help, he had hidden it.

Anaria stepped closer.

"Rylan."

He looked at her.

"I didn’t know."

She nodded.

"I know."

Rylan looked back at Zane.

"I wasn’t here when he became Lord. I didn’t see what happened after I left."

Kenai moved closer but said nothing.

Rylan continued looking at his brother.

"He was already carrying this corruption while ruling Wolfrine."

Anaria nodded.

"And he still chose to spread it."

Rylan’s expression hardened.

"That is what I can’t understand."

There was no sympathy in his voice, only disbelief.

Zane suddenly moved.

The guards immediately tightened their grip.

He opened his eyes slowly and looked at Rylan.

"You think this changes anything?"

Rylan stared at him.

"You’re finished."

Zane gave a weak smile.

"You haven’t seen what happens when this gets worse."

His body suddenly tensed.

One of the guards stepped back.

Zane gritted his teeth as his breathing became uneven again.

Anaria immediately recognized the signs.

"The corruption is acting up."

Rylan looked at her.

"Can you treat him?"

"I don’t know yet."

She moved closer, but Zane pulled against the guards.

"Don’t touch me."

Anaria stopped.

Zane looked at Rylan again.

"You think taking me back will make everything better?"

"No," Rylan answered.

"I think it will keep you from hurting anyone else."

Zane laughed.

"You still think you can control this."

Rylan’s expression remained cold.

"We’ll deal with it."

Zane’s eyes narrowed.

"You can’t stop what’s inside me."

Anaria watched him carefully.

The system had already confirmed that the corruption inside him was much stronger than what they had seen in the affected beastmen.

She didn’t know how long he had been suppressing it.

She didn’t know what would happen if his control completely failed.

But she knew one thing.

Leaving him here was not an option.

Rylan turned toward the guards.

"We’re taking him back to Wolfrine."

The guards nodded.

They lifted Zane and secured him properly before placing him on one of the beasts prepared for the journey.

Zane remained quiet.

His eyes followed Rylan.

There was still anger in them.

Not surrender.

Not regret.

Rylan mounted his own beast and looked toward the path leading back to Wolfrine.

Anaria climbed up beside him.

Kenai and Kai followed.

The guards moved around Zane to make sure he couldn’t escape.

As they began the journey back, Anaria glanced toward him.

Zane’s condition worried her.

The corruption was already getting stronger.

And now that he was weakened, she couldn’t tell what would happen next.

Rylan seemed to notice her expression.

"What is it?"

Anaria shook her head.

"Nothing we can deal with here."

Rylan nodded.

They continued toward Wolfrine.

Behind them, the northern forest slowly disappeared from view.

For now, Zane was captured.

The settlements were still standing.

And the people in Wolfrine were waiting for their new Lord to return.

But Anaria couldn’t forget what she had seen in Zane’s body.

Whatever he had brought back from the northern territory was still inside him.

And if they didn’t find a way to deal with it soon, capturing Zane might only be the beginning.
