Anaria made it exactly six steps before her body gave up on pretending.

The moment Mirah and her hired guards disappeared back toward Thornhollow, the poison struck with vicious precision. Her throat burned first, hot and raw as if she’d swallowed ground glass. Then her chest tightened so hard she staggered, fingers clawing uselessly at her collar as she fought for air.

"No," she rasped.

Her stomach twisted violently. Pain ripped through her limbs in jagged waves, draining the strength from her knees. She hit the dirt hard enough to bruise and coughed, a wet, ugly sound that ended with blood splattering onto the ground in front of her.

Anaria stared at it, breath shuddering.

No. Absolutely not.

She had already died once. She had woken up in a ruined fox girl’s body, been beaten, dragged through a public trial, banished by a pathetic excuse for a father, and force-fed poison by a fake-crying lunatic with too much free time. She was not about to die a second time outside the gates like discarded trash.

"This is ridiculous," she choked out, pressing one hand to the dirt as another spasm wracked her body. "I did not die in one world just to get murdered in another because some fox bitch can’t manage her insecurities."

Her vision blurred. Numbness crept through her fingers.

For the first time since arriving in this world, real panic cut through the anger.

"SYSTEM!" she shouted hoarsely. "HELP ME!"

A pale panel flashed into existence before her eyes.

[Emergency survival condition detected.]

Anaria nearly sobbed with relief and irritation at the same time.

"You took your sweet time."

[Host has been poisoned with high-grade corrosive toxin.]

[Estimated time until death: 00:17:42.]

"What?"

[Emergency suppression available.]

[Warning: suppression does not cure poison. It will only halt spread temporarily for 3 hours.]

[If host fails to obtain antidote before suppression expires, host will die.]

Anaria stared at the glowing words in disbelief. "Three hours? That’s your solution? A discount extension on my suffering?"

The system did not care.

[Emergency suppression activating.]

A cold sensation spread through her body, pushing back the fire in her veins. The choking pressure in her chest eased. Her stomach still churned and every bruise still hurt, but the numbness receded enough for her to breathe without feeling like her lungs were being shredded.

Anaria slumped back with a shaky exhale.

"Oh, great," she muttered. "I’m only mostly dying now."

A new panel appeared.

[Emergency Survival Task issued.]

[Find a safe shelter before poison suppression ends.]

[Reward: next-stage survival guidance unlocked.]

[Failure: death.]

Anaria blinked.

Then she glared at the air. "I’m literally poisoned and your answer is a scavenger hunt?"

No response.

"If I survive this, I’m filing a complaint against whoever designed you."

Still no response.

Grinding her teeth, Anaria forced herself upright. Her legs trembled under her weight. The poison might be suppressed, but the beating from earlier was not. Every step hurt. Her face throbbed where Mirah had slapped her, her ribs still ached from being shoved around by guards, and the soles of her feet were already protesting the rough ground beneath them.

She looked back once at Moon cresent’s gates, looming in the distance like the mouth of a rotten beast, then turned away and limped into the wilderness.

The path quickly dissolved into uneven dirt, scrub, and scattered rock. Wind moved through the dry brush with a faint hiss that made the open land feel too large, too quiet, too empty. Anaria kept going anyway, clutching the miserable little bundle of belongings she’d managed to salvage and trying not to think about the clock ticking down inside her head.

Amazing, she thought bitterly. Yesterday I had silk sheets and filtered water. Today I’m limping through the wilderness barefoot, poisoned, and one bad decision away from being eaten.

Character development was violent.

By the time she found the cave, she was close to collapsing again.

It was tucked between a slope of jagged rock and a stand of scrub trees, half-hidden by shadow and overgrowth. The entrance was wide enough to offer shelter, dark enough to feel immediately suspicious, and quiet in a way that made her skin prickle.

Anaria stopped at the mouth of it and narrowed her eyes.

"A cave," she muttered. "Fantastic. Every terrible decision in history starts with someone entering a suspicious cave alone."

But the ground outside was open, and the sun was already lowering. She had no strength left to keep wandering.

So she stepped inside.

The air turned cooler around her, still and faintly damp. She had only made it several paces in before the system chimed again.

[Emergency task complete: safe shelter located.]

Anaria let out a breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding and slid down against the cave wall, eyes falling shut for one blissful second.

"Good," she said. "Now that I’ve completed your little survival errand, how about the part where you tell me how not to die?"

There was a beat of silence.

Then the system said:

[High-rate beastman detected within shelter range.]

Anaria’s eyes snapped open.

"A what?"

[Detected beastman possesses viable cure source for host’s poison.]

Hope flared so fast it almost hurt.

"Good," she said immediately, pushing herself back upright. "Excellent. Wonderful. Where is it? Is it blood? Venom? Some weird beast herb? I’m flexible."

[Cure source is nearby.]

The panel shifted.

[Proceed deeper into shelter.]

Anaria stared at it.

Then she stared into the darkness ahead.

"I already hate this."

The cave narrowed as she moved farther in, the shadows deepening around her. The air changed too warmer now, heavier somehow, carrying a wild scent she couldn’t place. Something distinctly male lingered beneath it, sharp and animal and far too strong to belong to an ordinary person.

Her steps slowed.

The deeper she went, the more the cave felt occupied.

Then she saw him.

A massive wolf lay half-curled in the back of the cavern, black fur rippling faintly as his body twitched in restless agitation. Even at rest he looked enormous—far too large, far too powerful, all heavy muscle and dangerous teeth and wild strength packed into one terrifyingly beautiful beast.

Anaria stopped dead.

"Oh, absolutely not."

The wolf’s breathing was rough, uneven. One paw scraped against the cave floor as if he were fighting something in sleep.

Anaria took one look at his size and decided the system had lost its mind.

"That thing could bite me in half and use my bones as decorative cutlery."

[New task issued.]

[Calm the berserk beast and stabilize his condition.]

She nearly laughed.

"You want me to what?"

[Failure: death.]

"Your customer service is horrific."

[Host’s current soothing power is insufficient.]

[Temporary enhancement available.]

[Cost: 500 Spirit Fang Coins. Debt will be recorded to host account.]

Anaria went still.

Then very slowly said, "You’re charging me while I’m dying?"

[Do you accept enhancement support?]

"This system is a loan shark."

But the wolf’s breathing was growing rougher, and she had no time to argue.

"Fine," she snapped. "I accept. Add it to my list of terrible life choices."

A small vial appeared in her hand. She swallowed the contents without ceremony and nearly gagged at the bitter taste. Warmth spread through her chest almost immediately, strange and soft, like a pulse of energy unfurling beneath her skin.

The wolf shifted.

Anaria took a careful step forward.

Then another.

"Okay," she whispered to herself. "No sudden movements. No dying. No getting eaten."

She crouched near him slowly, every nerve in her body on fire. Up close, he was even more intimidating, his paws larger than her face, his teeth visible beneath a lifted lip, his body radiating dangerous heat.

Still, she lifted a trembling hand and touched his fur.

It was softer than she expected.

The wolf’s body tensed.

Anaria froze.

"Easy," she whispered, voice barely audible. "I’m not here to hurt you. I’m just trying very hard not to die in your cave."

Slowly, cautiously, she stroked a hand along the thick fur at his neck. Then again. The strange warmth from the enhancement flowed through her fingertips, a soothing pulse that seemed to sink into him.

The wolf’s breathing eased.

His muscles gradually loosened beneath her hand. The frantic twitching subsided. The violent, unstable pressure in the cave softened until the air itself felt less sharp.

A panel blinked.

[Task complete: berserk state temporarily stabilized.]

Anaria sagged with relief.

"Great," she said. "Wonderful. I soothed the giant murder wolf. Now give me the antidote."

There was a pause.

Then the system answered.

[Two antidote options available.]

[Option 1: Immediate cure via mating absorption essence from compatible beastman source.]

Anaria stared at the panel.

Then at the wolf.

Then back at the panel.

"...I’m sorry," she said at last. "Via what?"

[Option 2: External antidote located in distant kingdom territory.]

A second line appeared beneath it.

[Estimated travel time exceeds suppression window.]

[Remaining suppression time: 01:08:13.]

Anaria’s jaw dropped.

"No. Absolutely not. Rewind. Clarify option one before I pass out from stress."

[Mating absorption from compatible beastman will neutralize host poison immediately.]

For a long moment, the cave was silent.

Then Anaria pressed a hand to her forehead and laughed once in disbelief.

"I knew I was going to hate the answer."

The system remained as cold and unhelpful as ever.

[Option 2 is not viable within remaining time.]

[Recommend immediate selection of Option 1.]

"This is not a recommendation," Anaria hissed. "This is medical blackmail with extra steps!"

As if the universe hadn’t humiliated her enough already, the wolf’s body suddenly shuddered.

Anaria jerked back.

Before her eyes, the beast began to shift.

Fur receded. Massive limbs reshaped. The hulking wolf form collapsed inward and reformed into the body of a man sprawled unconscious across the cave floor, broad-shouldered, long-limbed, all hard muscle and dangerous beauty. Dark hair fell across his brow. Wolf ears remained atop his head, and even unconscious, he looked unfairly striking.

Anaria stared.

"Oh, you have got to be kidding me."

Because of course the emergency antidote had to look like that.

Of course.

[Remaining suppression time: 00:59:41.]

Anaria squeezed her eyes shut.

"No," she said firmly. "No. This is insane. He’s unconscious. I met him ten minutes ago. I am not doing cave emergency intimacy with a stranger because your design team has issues."

[Host may refuse.]

She opened one eye.

[Failure penalty remains death.]

Anaria looked at the unconscious wolf beastman. Then at the countdown. Then at her own shaking hands.

No miracle was coming.

No better option existed.

She swallowed hard, face burning.

"Unbelievable," she muttered to the heavens. Then, glaring at the unconscious man as if this were somehow his fault too, she added under her breath, "Sorry, pretty boy. This is a medical emergency, and I’m blaming the psychotic foxes and the evil loan-shark system in my head."

Her hands trembled as she moved toward him.

[Remaining suppression time: 00:58:52.]
