Chapter 520: Tough Physical Love
Cecilia felt her strength drain the moment the euphoria and adrenaline ran out. The flood of power that had carried her through the final push receded like a tide pulling back from the shore, leaving her limp and trembling against the pillows.
To prevent her from experiencing a dangerous drop, Oathran immediately began feeding her.
Congee first, warm and savory, spooned gently past her lips. Then small bites of sweet things, dates, honeyed bread, a square of dark chocolate that melted on her tongue.
He had researched postpartum recovery obsessively even before he left and was now executing his carefully memorized plan.
Cecilia didn’t even register what he was putting in her mouth. She simply chewed, swallowed, and opened her lips for the next bite, her eyes half-lidded with exhaustion and dazed bliss.
Eastiel sat on the other side of the bed, silently crying. Tears streamed down his beautiful face in an unstoppable flood, dripping off his jaw and soaking into the collar of his shirt. He wasn’t sobbing or making any sound at all.
He was just leaking, his golden eyes fixed on Cecilia like she just performed a miracle, and to him, she definitely had.
"Those were elixirs...?" Lazuardi asked Arkai as they entered the room. The dragon doctor was pushing a custom-made incubator, a metal frame supporting a bed of crackling hot charcoal, embers glowing. The egg sat nestled above it, its cracked obsidian surface pulsing with gentle veins of golden light.
"What I’ve seen her produce before was something that could enhance or replenish exhausted mana. Perhaps these ones were similar?" Arkai offered as he followed inside.
"Are you saying the Lesser Goddess has advanced regeneration skills?! If she were a dragon, I wouldn’t be surprised... but she’s a human—no, I should stop being surprised now," Lazuardi said, shaking his head.
"Are you sure she’s alright? No complications at all?" Arkai pressed.
"This is why I asked. That elixir just now, I suspect, is what instantly healed the tear in her birth canal. I checked. Perhaps originally, there was a bit of a uterine atony issue as well. After all, this is quite... a bigger egg than what a human usually can give birth to..."
Lazuardi cleared his throat. "She’s very healthy, which is why the issue wasn’t fatal in the first place because I’m here. I could have closed her internal wound using my magic, but the elixir... I suppose it helped even more effectively on its own."
He narrowed his eyes at Arkai again. "Are you sure it was just a potion to enhance mana?"
"What do you mean ’just’? Can we, even with today’s technology, produce something like a ’mana potion’?" Arkai answered incredulously.
"That’s not my point!" Lazuardi sighed.
"It wasn’t a Mana Potion," Cecilia tried to explain, her voice still a bit too weak. "It was a different type of potion... especially for healing."
"Huh!" Lazuardi’s eyes widened. "How fascinating!"
"Stop pestering her," Oathran said suddenly, his voice low and warning.
"..." Lazuardi fell silent. "Yes. Alright."
Cecilia’s eyes drifted to the egg resting on its stove-like bed of coals. She chuckled weakly. "You just came out of my cushy tummy and instantly got roasted outside... Our Sol is already very hardworking..."
The golden glow of the cracks pulsed gently, a soft, rhythmic shimmer. It looked like it was sleeping.
"It’s just the usual stimuli therapy," Lazuardi said. "Tomorrow, take it flying, Oathran. At least an hour a day. Talk to it often. Also, sometimes change the bed to ice, and frequently submerge it in water. The bathtub is fine."
"Changing the temperatures too?" Oathran asked.
"Yes, buy a large pot and simmer it once in a while as well," Lazuardi added.
Cecilia rubbed her forehead. What kind of treatment was this? She hadn’t heard anything like this even on the internet. "Are you trying to cook my baby...?"
"It’s stimuli therapy! The baby needs experiences, okay? Also, it’s a dragon’s egg. The tougher the physical love, the better," Lazuardi said with a dismissive wave. "Now, let me check you up again. Are your feet cold?"
"It’s okay... I’m just sleepy..."
"Any strange tingling sensation?"
"No..."
Arkai and Oathran exchanged looks, and the dragon smiled at him casually. Then Arkai turned to look at Eastiel, who was still ugly-beautifully crying on the other side of the bed, his face blotchy and damp, his golden eyes still leaking.
He sighed.
After everything that had happened, Oathran’s return and Arzhen’s murder at Eastiel’s claws, something had changed.
Arkai didn’t know what, truly. And it felt strange.
His brothers felt the same, yet also very different from how they had been before. The three of them had always been close, bound by years of shared history and shared danger.
But now there was something else between Oathran and Eastiel.
First of all, no matter how impulsive, young, and reckless Eastiel was, there was no way he would suddenly fall into a rampage just by seeing Arzhen Vasiliev kill a random woman and reach toward Cecilia.
Eastiel had this unique composure in him. It was evident in the dam incident, and even that night facing that portal in the sky. He didn’t lose control. Not like that.
The rampage... it must have been personal. A hatred so scalding it burned hotter than any hell.
But why?
Eastiel and Arzhen had never met. They weren’t connected beyond Cecilia’s failed marriage to the dead billionaire. There was no history between them, no grudge, no reason for the kind of blood-deep grudge that had turned him into a monster and torn another man apart.
Not to mention what the two of them had said that night.
Eastiel, snarling at Arkai that he didn’t remember. Oathran, promising to explain everything to Eastiel but saying nothing to him. The words had circled Arkai’s mind for days now. Completely unanswered.
Looking even further back, Oathran had also acted uncharacteristically.
He was the biological father of the baby. He was their eldest brother and the fucking Dragon Lord too.
But he had just left to... God knows where, for weeks, without explanation, without contact.
For what possible reason?
Any kind of misunderstanding didn’t make sense. Arkai didn’t even know the context of Oathran’s supposed anger or Cecilia’s supposed mistake.
Two nights ago, Oathran and Eastiel had gone out together without him and Cecilia.
Arkai, of course, usually would cherish any alone time he could get with his girlfriend. But he felt like he was being excluded. He remembered how Oathran said he would explain things to Eastiel, but he hadn’t explained anything to Arkai.
Was it a secret he wasn’t supposed to know?
