Chapter 545: [A Godless World] (13)

After a second day of searching without finding a single clue—and even losing track of Ember and Adrian—John’s confidence had been worn down considerably.

This couldn’t be right. This was supposed to be nothing more than an ordinary dungeon. No matter how difficult it was, there should always be clues for them to follow. Yet they hadn’t even found the slightest trace of anyone suspicious.

If this kept up, they would become infected.

Today, something was only pounding frantically on the door. Tomorrow, that same door might be smashed open.

"Open the door! I already booked a house viewing!"

The voice outside grew increasingly shrill. Elle couldn’t help frowning, her teeth grinding together with a screech that sounded like metal scraping against metal.

"I want to eat every last one of them..."

"Shh." John quietly warned his little sister.

Just as the description had said, countless footsteps and all kinds of strange noises began echoing outside. Perhaps... the culprit was hiding among them as well.

Outside, Adrian and Ember crouched behind the hallway corner, watching the bizarre "people" relentlessly knocking on one door after another, all demanding to view the apartments.

"So this is the source of those strange noises," Adrian muttered.

Now that they knew the residents here were extremely sensitive to the presence of the living, they no longer dared move around too openly.

Turning to Ember, Adrian asked, "What do you think our room looks like by now?"

After all, they hadn’t been staying inside it. There was a good chance their room had already become the property of some bizarre creature...

"We’ll know once we take a look."

With that, Ember swiftly headed into the emergency stairwell and made his way up to the fifth floor.

Contrary to what they had expected, the fifth floor seemed completely deserted.

"No way. There are obviously more vacant rooms up here than downstairs," Adrian said in disbelief.

If there was anything different about this place, then it could only be...

"I’m not trying to flatter myself, but I think my discovery is a pretty big one."

That’s right. The strange mirror was in their room on the fifth floor, and by sheer coincidence, those monsters had never ventured up there. Didn’t that mean it was thanks to his discovery that they had remained safe?

Ember couldn’t help saying, "Then that means the mirror can suppress evil spirits. What do you think happened to the souls in Room 601?"

Adrian: "..."

For the first time, Adrian was rendered speechless. Strangely enough, Ember found it rather amusing and couldn’t help feeling a small sense of satisfaction.

The door swung open, and darkness immediately flooded their vision, as though the room were a world completely isolated from everything outside.

Even so, Adrian and Ember could still make out the silhouette of a tall man standing inside their room. He was holding something in his hand.

It was unmistakably their mirror.

Both sides moved almost simultaneously.

Ember shot forward, appearing before the man in the blink of an eye, then whipped his leg up in a kick that sliced through the air.

The man flicked his cloak aside, revealing tiny crimson glimmers that flashed briefly within Adrian’s sight.

"It’s him!" Adrian shouted.

Ember had naturally seen the distinctive cloak as well. This was clearly the man who had taken the household shrine from Room 601—and, most likely, the culprit behind everything.

But before either of them could make another move, the hem of the man’s cloak suddenly billowed upward. In the next instant, his entire body dissolved into black dust and vanished without a trace.

Adrian wasn’t sure if it was just his imagination, but even as the man disintegrated, he could still feel those eyes fixed intently on him...

That, however, wasn’t their biggest concern right now.

Looking through the window, they saw that the world outside had once again become shrouded in night. It was obvious they had returned to their own space. Without the protection of that strange mirror, it wouldn’t be long before the apartment viewers flooded onto the fifth floor.

As if to confirm Adrian’s suspicion, a deafening wave of footsteps soon surged up from the hallway.

Click!

Without the slightest hesitation, Ember locked the door, then grabbed Adrian—who was still standing there in a daze—and pulled him toward the sofa.

Sure enough, it wasn’t long before furious knocking erupted outside.

"I got here first!"

"Go pick another apartment!"

"Why was there no one up here before?! Did everyone wait until I arrived to start fighting over it?!"

"Get out of the way! I found this place first!"

The synchronized pounding, backed by tremendous force, made the door groan under the pressure. Cracking sounds echoed through the room as fractures spread across its surface, visible to the naked eye.

"We’re going to get eaten, Ember," Adrian whispered.

Ember frowned, his expression solemn, while the viewers were utterly speechless.

[Who’s going to eat whom exactly, Adrian? Them eating you, or you eating them?]

[He really acts like some fragile little thing that needs protecting.]

[When in reality, he kills people without the slightest hesitation. Hahahaha.]

Ember remained perfectly still.

Sure enough, after waiting for a while and realizing they couldn’t break the door down, the strange beings had no choice but to leave.

Noises echoing through the night like this naturally filled people with fear.

But both Ember and Adrian had already seen what those things looked like. They were, in essence, nothing more than the residents of Lotus Park. Right now, they were simply fighting over apartments to buy.

Thinking of it that way, they didn’t seem nearly as frightening anymore.

Once the sounds had faded into the distance, Adrian finally spoke up.

"Let’s head to the sixth floor. Maybe we’ll find more clues. And if we can kill that guy while we’re at it, even better."

Ember disagreed.

From their brief confrontation just now, he could clearly tell that the man was no ordinary opponent. The only reason he hadn’t fought back was because he seemed to be in a hurry to deal with something else.

Looking at Adrian, Ember said in an unquestionable tone,

"I’ll go. You stay here and wait for me."

Adrian: "???"
