Chapter 232 - 163: Powerful Hidden Boss (2)
In an instant, Firelight surged into the sky, accompanied by eerie, pained howls.
It seemed they had indeed landed a heavy blow on that damned boss!
But they didn’t even have a chance to celebrate.
Dozens of incredibly thick roots lashed out from within the Firelight, striking like heavy iron chains and speeding sharp arrows.
BANG!
In an instant, one was sliced in two at the waist while the other was riddled with holes. Their deaths were utterly gruesome.
"..."
Now Wandering Souls, the two looked at each other in dismay.
If their bodies didn’t disappear, the bottom of the pit would probably be piled high with their corpses by now.
What’s more, to their despair, Niuniu had already tried numerous ways to cheese the fight.
But he had come up with nothing.
There wasn’t even a single bug.
This made Niuniu look to the heavens and sigh. ’Why is a beta test game this polished? Couldn’t they have left a few bugs in?’
"Isn’t this boss a little overpowered?" Mushroom said with a grimace, touching the spot on his abdomen that had just been pierced.
Hearing this, Niuniu rubbed his chin. After a moment’s thought, he said, "You’re right. This boss probably isn’t meant for us to fight at our current stage."
That wasn’t anything unusual. Many games have a similar setup: an early-game boss that’s incredibly difficult to defeat.
But Niuniu had no intention of giving up.
"However, I don’t think it’s entirely impossible to beat this thing."
"After all, even if it is early-game, as long as it’s not a scripted death, it’s unlikely the developers would design a boss we’re completely incapable of beating, right?"
Niuniu said, as if stating the obvious.
’Hsss... He does have a point.’
But Mushroom still felt like something was off.
’We’re both considered pretty skilled Prison Players, yet we can’t even get close to Tasolomo. Wouldn’t other players have it even worse?’
...
Mushroom’s guess was correct.
Facing Tasolomo, the ultimate boss at the bottom of the pit, Guagua and Lemon had fought dozens of battles and tried all sorts of combat styles, only to be met with failure time and time again.
And it wasn’t as if Tasolomo and its Hosted Incarnations would go easy on them just because they were women. They were firm believers in gender equality, letting the two girls experience every bizarre way to die imaginable.
And so, after dying an untold number of times...
After reviving once more, the two girls exchanged a glance, then instinctively looked away.
"Lemon, why are your eyes so red?"
"They’re not! I... I just got some sand in my eye."
"*Sniff*... Me too."
"So... should we try again?"
After a moment of silence, Guagua suddenly turned and threw herself into Lemon’s arms, who immediately hugged her back.
In front of the Milestone Spirit Candle, the two began to wail, tears streaming down their faces.
"I’m not fighting anymore... I can’t! Waaah..."
"Sob sob sob... This boss is so hard... It’s so hard!"
"We can’t beat it... We really can’t beat it..."
"Sob... I’m so terrible at this..."
...
Aside from those who were beaten to the point of tears...
...there were countless players who had been pushed into a rage.
"FUCK YOU! DIE!!!"
"You bastards! All of you, just die!"
"AAAAHHH!!!"
Brother Mangzi’s eyes were bloodshot, and his face was a terrifying shade of red—it was hard to tell if it was from the Warfire or his own fury.
He swung his Great Axe, carving a path of destruction through the horde of Hosted Incarnations, felling one after another with each swing.
Bu Long was holding his own, but the monsters’ relentless attacks, combined with Brother Mangzi’s reckless charges, put him under immense pressure.
SCREECH!
A Hosted Incarnation’s claw scraped against his Shield, sending a shower of sparks into the air.
The blow was so strong it literally made the Shield spark!
But as the saying goes, anger makes one lose all reason.
And in the game of Spirit Candle, anger didn’t just make you lose your reason—it invited a crushing blow.
SWOOSH!
A mass of roots twisted together, forming what looked like a giant hand. It took advantage of Brother Mangzi’s frenzied state, snatching him up when he wasn’t paying attention.
Another giant hand shot straight for Bu Long.
But Bu Long’s gaze sharpened. Seizing the moment, he gritted his teeth and raised his Shield.
DOOM—
The giant, root-woven hand was repelled. Staggered by the impact, Tasolomo grew even more frantic.
CRUNCH! CREAK!
The next second, Tasolomo’s roots squeezed with sudden force, and with a sickening POP, Brother Mangzi was crushed into oblivion!
Bu Long could only stare, dumbfounded.
But in the middle of a battle, there was no time to be distracted.
Without Brother Mangzi charging ahead to take the pressure, he only managed to hold on for a few more moments before he, too, was met with death.
"Brother Mangzi, maybe we should be a bit more careful?" Bu Long tried to reason with him.
"No! Absolutely not!"
Brother Mangzi glared at Tasolomo in the center of the pit, his teeth clenched as he bit out each word.
"I! WILL! CRUSH! IT! HEAD! ON!"
"Again!"
With a furious roar, Brother Mangzi charged back toward the Milestone Spirit Candle.
However, this was destined to be nothing more than the start of another death...
...
However, looking at the player base as a whole, they were not entirely without a fighting chance.
After all, every game has that small handful of top-tier players capable of delivering one shock after another.
"I’m leaving the other monsters to you."
Faraway glanced at Skyrim in front of him and spoke, his words as concise as ever.
"A piece of cake."
Skyrim stood with his hands clasped behind his back, his expression serene.
’...He may be a newcomer, but his skills are decent, and his composure seems solid.’
Faraway gave a slight nod.
’Damn, the legendary Faraway Lord is even better at posturing than I am!’
’No way. I can’t let him outdo me!’
Gray Sky thought to himself.
He’d never been outdone when it came to posturing, and he absolutely couldn’t fall behind now!
Faraway had just logged on for the day, and it was Guagua, of course, who had paired the two of them up.
Though they had joined the game late, these two skilled players had quickly caught up to the front-runners.
They, too, had quickly found Tasolomo at the bottom of the pit and had begun their assault.
VWOOOM—
As another one of Tasolomo’s shrieks echoed...
...the battle between the two players officially began.
Skyrim hadn’t been idle; his Power had been increasing at a startling pace.
And as his Level and Attributes improved, his potential ceiling naturally soared.
As such, he paid the Hosted Incarnations before him no mind. The only real challenge was preventing them from turning their attention to Faraway.
And he was doing a decent job of it... though it was proving to be a bit difficult.
SWOOSH!
A root lashed out. Faraway dodged it swiftly with an Execution Step, paying no mind whatsoever to the Hosted Incarnation attacking from behind.
BANG!
Fortunately, Skyrim rushed over just in time to intercept it.
Staring at Faraway’s back, he was stunned for a moment.
’He’s actually placing his complete trust in me?’
’Now that’s the mark of a true master... I’ve still got a lot to learn!’
As admiration for Faraway grew in his heart, Skyrim secretly bolstered his own resolve.
SQUELCH! SQUELCH!
Faraway remained perfectly calm, yet his assault was terrifyingly sharp. Alternating between Magic and Arrows, he weaved through Tasolomo’s onslaught like a roaming dragon.
VWOOOM—
Tasolomo’s shriek washed over them once more.
But Faraway, as if having timed its attack perfectly, simply used a well-timed Rolling to evade the effects of the bizarre sound!
Taking damage, Tasolomo’s assault grew even more ferocious. It even launched several crimson, area-wide attacks, but Faraway miraculously evaded them all with his Dodge.
After his Talent was enhanced, Dodge could be used as a basic Ability, unless his luck was truly terrible...
Clearly, Faraway’s luck had been quite good these last few times.
To be honest, however, if he had any other choice, Faraway would never have opted for such an unreliable strategy.
Thus, while he appeared to be handling it with ease, he was in fact dancing on a knife’s edge.
His damage output grew more and more intense.
Tasolomo’s counterattack also grew more frantic.
Behind them, Skyrim was under immense pressure. He was cursing his fate internally, but on the outside, he gritted his teeth and held on, desperately blocking every Attack from the Hosted Incarnations for Faraway.
As a root struck, Faraway’s eyes narrowed, and he surprisingly raised a Small Shield to Block.
DOOM—
After a dull thud, Tasolomo let out a completely different kind of howl, its root falling limply to the ground.
At the same time, the surrounding Hosted Incarnations also cried out in unison, collapsing to the ground as if they had suffered a grievous blow.
Faraway had actually managed to stagger the boss!
"A perfect chance!"
Stunned by Faraway’s skill, Skyrim’s eyes couldn’t help but light up.
However, there was no need for a reminder.
Seizing the opportunity, Faraway unleashed another barrage of damage before taking out his Magic Staff, pressing it against Tasolomo’s tumorous body, and activating an Ability.
Spiritual Power gathered silently, coalescing into a blinding point of light.
The next moment, it detonated!
