"You need to eat," she said.
"I need you to look at this." He didn’t look up. His hands were moving across the display controls with the focused efficiency of an eighty-four-year-old Cognitect whose lattice had been processing data for forty-one hours and had found something that food couldn’t wait for. "Sit down."
She sat.
He’d taken over the main display surface — the formation-enhanced workspace that Silas used for detector calibration. Three separate data visualizations hung in the air, each one dense with lines and nodes and pulsing connections.
"The energy conduit theory," he said. "Confirmed. And it’s worse than we thought."

"It’s not just data."
"It’s a pipeline." He highlighted the pulse recordings from forty-seven extracted operatives. Each signal contained two distinct layers — a data layer and an energy layer, nested inside each other like a message hidden inside a heartbeat. "Every synchronization pulse carries a payload of spiritual energy. Small — individually negligible. A fraction of what the operative absorbs from the environment around it. The parasite walks through a village, sits in a market, works in a shop. It absorbs ambient spiritual energy through its host’s natural metabolic processes. And every eight seconds, the pulse carries a portion of that energy back to the hive."
"Every operative. Every pulse. Every eight seconds."
"Across a network of potentially sixty to a hundred thousand operatives. Each one sipping energy from its environment and sending a fraction home every eight seconds, all day, every day, for twenty-one months." He pulled up the second visualization — a calculation that his lattice had been running for the past two days. "I modeled the total energy transfer. Conservative estimate, assuming only ten thousand operatives are active outside the hive — which is the low end."
The number appeared on the display. Raven looked at it.
"That’s not possible."
"That’s confirmed. I ran it fourteen times with different assumptions. The answer varies by twenty percent either direction. But the magnitude is consistent."
The energy the door was receiving through the operative network was orders of magnitude larger than what the consumed souls provided. The twenty-three thousand souls inside the hive were the door’s structural energy — the material it was built from. But the continental parasite network was the door’s fuel — the ongoing energy supply that kept the construction moving forward.
"The souls are the bricks," Raven said. "The operatives are the quarry."
"The souls are the structure. The operatives are the engine. Cut the engine, and the construction slows to whatever the hive can generate from local ley-line energy alone."
"How much does it slow?"
"At local ley-line rates — with the continental network severed — I estimate construction drops to eight to twelve percent of current pace."
Eight to twelve percent. The door at sixty percent completion, growing at two to three percent per month. Cut the network, and growth drops to a fraction. The two-to-three-year timeline stretches to decades.
"That’s not a disruption," Raven said. "That’s a siege."
"That’s the point. You don’t need to destroy the door. You don’t need to confront the creature. You cut the supply lines and let the construction starve."

"How many nodes?"
"The crystals documented a section of Zone 4. Based on node density and the chamber’s dimensions, I estimate four hundred to six hundred nodes in the total network."
"And the critical threshold?"
"Every distributed network has redundancy. You can lose nodes and maintain function — up to a point. Beyond that point, the network fragments. It can’t maintain coherent anchoring. The door’s structure becomes unstable."
"The number, Coop."
"Thirty percent. Destroy thirty percent of the network’s nodes — a hundred and fifty, give or take — and the anchoring fails. The door doesn’t collapse. It becomes structurally incoherent. Can’t maintain alignment. Can’t channel the energy properly. Construction stops until the nodes are rebuilt."
"How long to rebuild?"
"Months. The nodes are grown from the hive’s organic architecture. Each one requires biological development time. And every node we destroy is one she has to regrow while maintaining the existing structure. It’s not just addition — it’s repair under load."
"Can we reach the nodes?"
"The outer zone nodes — Zones 2 and 3 — are accessible without penetrating to the center. The atmospheric density is manageable in improved suits. You don’t need to get anywhere near the central chamber."
"We go in, destroy nodes in the outer zones, get out."
"Repeatedly. She’ll rebuild. We destroy again. Every cycle costs her months of construction time and forces energy expenditure on repair instead of growth. Combined with the energy siege — cutting the operative network through continental extraction — the door’s completion timeline extends beyond anything she planned for."
Raven looked at the display. The three visualizations — the energy pipeline, the fuel calculation, the network map. Coop’s lattice had taken the recording crystal data and turned it into a war plan that didn’t require fighting the creature at all.
"There’s something else," Coop said.

"The synchronization pulse. Eight-second rhythm. Data layer plus energy layer. Consistent across every operative we’ve extracted." He highlighted a section of the waveform. "Except it’s not quite consistent."
"What do you mean?"
"The pulse has a third layer. Beneath the data, beneath the energy. A modulation pattern so faint that the dual-layer detectors barely register it. I found it because the lattice was looking for energy differentials and stumbled across frequency artifacts that didn’t match either known layer."
"What is it?"
"I don’t know. The modulation doesn’t correspond to any data encoding I can identify. It’s not information in any format I recognize. It’s not energy transfer — the amplitude is too low. It’s... structural. Like a carrier wave that the other two signals ride on."
"A carrier wave."

The door wasn’t just building on the dimensional substrate. It was wearing the substrate away as fuel for its own construction. "The siege engine," Raven said.

"The Accord’s channels fail entirely. Hades’s architecture degrades further. And whatever protections the dimensional framework provides against things crossing between planes..."

The door of the Formation Hall opened. Kairos stood in the threshold, sword across his back, robes carrying the faint shimmer of someone who had been working with dimensional frequencies all night and hadn’t bothered to change.
"I heard the last part," he said. "The carrier wave."
"How much?"
"Enough." He crossed to the display. Coop reactivated the waveform visualization. Kairos studied it with the absolute stillness of a being who was looking at something he’d never seen before and was very carefully not reacting.
"This frequency," he said. "It’s not from Ascara."
"What do you mean?"
"Ascara’s dimensional substrate has a baseline resonance. Every plane does — a frequency signature that identifies it, the way a fingerprint identifies a person. I’ve felt Ascara’s resonance since I manifested. It’s how I navigate, how I process information, how I interact with the ley lines." He pointed at the carrier wave. "This isn’t Ascara’s frequency. It’s something else. Something embedded in the substrate that doesn’t belong to this reality."
Coop’s lattice flickered. "Embedded how?"
"I don’t know. But it’s old. Older than the hive, older than the operative network. The hive didn’t create this frequency — it found it and built its communication system on top of it. Like building a road on a foundation someone else laid down."
"Someone else," Raven said.
"Or something else. Something that was in the dimensional substrate before I became Keeper. Before the Accord was established." He stepped back from the display. "I need to analyze this further. But if the carrier wave predates the Accord — if something was placed in the dimensional fabric of this reality before anyone was watching..."
He didn’t finish the sentence. He didn’t need to. The implication hung in the air like the fifth unanswered question adding itself to the list: not just who told the seed to build a door, but who laid the foundation the seed built on.
"How does this change the strategy?" Raven asked.
"It doesn’t," Coop said. "Not immediately. The carrier wave is degrading regardless of what it is or where it came from. Cutting the operative network reduces the load on the substrate. Destroying nodes reduces the anchoring stress. Both objectives still apply."
"But it changes what we’re looking at," Kairos said. "We’re not just fighting a rogue seed that built a door. We’re fighting something that was using infrastructure already present in this reality. Infrastructure that was hidden. From the Accord. From Hades. From everyone."
"Six questions now," Raven said. "Not five."
"Six questions. Still no answers."

"So we have two objectives," Raven said, pulling the conversation back to ground they could stand on. "Cut the operative network to starve the door’s construction. And destroy distribution nodes to break the anchoring. Both slow the door. Both reduce the erosion."
"And both require sustained, repeated action across months or years," Coop said. "This isn’t a single strike. It’s a campaign."
"The operative network is the easier target," Kairos said. "The continental detection system is already catching operatives. Accelerate deployment. Share the dual-layer detector technology with allies — Drake, the Northern clans, the Confederacy. Every allied settlement running detectors is another section of the network going dark."
"And the nodes?"
"Harder. The nodes are inside the hive. Reaching them means entering the growth zone. The creature let us in once for reconnaissance. She won’t let us walk through her walls to destroy her infrastructure."
"She doesn’t need to let us," Coop said. "The outer zone nodes — Zones 2 and 3 — are accessible through the perimeter. The atmospheric density is manageable in improved suits. Small teams, in and out. Destroy ten, fifteen nodes per insertion. She rebuilds. We return. Destroy again."
"Attrition."
"Sustained attrition against a target that can’t replace losses as fast as we inflict them. The mathematics favor the attacker when the defender has to grow biological structures that take months to develop, and the attacker has teams that can deploy in hours."
"She’ll adapt," Raven said. "After the first insertion, the hive will respond. The corridors will tighten. The performing city will drop its facade. She’ll deploy defenses."
"Then we adapt faster. Different insertion points. Different team compositions. Different timing. The perimeter is two hundred and six square kilometers — she can’t fortify everywhere."
"Then we run a campaign." Raven stood. "Core team briefing at noon. Bring everything — the energy model, the node map, the carrier wave data. And Coop—"
"Yes?"
"Eat something. You look worse than Kairos after the pillow fight."
"That’s the most insulting thing anyone has said to me in eighty-four years."
"You’re welcome."
She left the Formation Hall. Kairos stayed — he was already pulling the carrier wave data into his own analysis framework, the ice-blue eyes carrying the specific intensity of a being who had found a thread that led somewhere he hadn’t known existed.
Coop looked at the eighty-four-year-old man and the cosmic being, both bent over waveform data in a workshop that smelled of burnt copper and cold tea, and thought about the sixty years he’d spent before Seven Peaks. The wars. The factories. The decades of breaking down and being put back together. He ate the ration bar Raven had left on the workbench. It tasted like chalk. He ate it anyway.
The morning light caught the settlement below — eighty-five thousand people waking up, eating breakfast, going to work. Not knowing that the fabric of reality was thinning beneath their feet, eight seconds at a time, sixty thousand pulses, each one a microscopic erosion in the architecture that held the world together.
But knowing, in the way that people always knew when the ground they stood on was defended by someone who refused to let it fall, that the mountain was still standing.
