Chapter 917 - 480: I’m Not Here for You, I’m Here for My Wife (2)
The bodyguard brought in a variety of authentic snacks from different parts of this city, filling up the table, still steaming hot.
Joshua Hughes walked into the room. Since she barely ate during dinner, there should be at least one or two things among all these delicacies that she would like.
He walked into the bedroom. The soft light spilled onto the floor and shone on the ends of her glossy black hair, giving it a shimmering flow, making him unable to resist reaching out his large hand to rub it: "Get up and have something to eat, I know you’re not asleep."
Avery Jane’s long eyelashes fluttered as her tightly shut eyes moved, with traces of tears still visible on her face.
She didn’t even know what had gotten into her today. Would she rather believe the words of a girl she had just met once and get into an argument with him? She knew how busy he was, with piles of documents every day and various engagements he couldn’t refuse. Yet, he always found ways to be with her. She wasn’t unaware of his kindness towards her, but the more he was so, the more worried and afraid she became. What if one day he really remembers everything from the past, and if it’s not as he said or as she imagined, what would she do then?
Avery Jane sat up and wrapped her arms around his strong waist, her tears quickly soaking his chest: "I’m sorry, I’m sorry..."
On a whim, she had dragged him to Sydney, wasting his time. Many in the board already disliked him, and now they had an even better excuse to talk about him.
Those few words from her plucked the chord in his heart, letting beautiful notes flow out. Her initiated embrace made him feel that all of this was worthwhile. Even risking such danger once more and deceiving her seemed right. When her soft arms gently encircled him, his heart felt more brilliant than the night view outside.
"Joshua, would you ever lie to me? Would you?" Avery Jane leaned against his chest, breathing in his enticing scent, a mature, dangerous, intense masculine aroma that had already begun to conquer her. She was frightened, even not daring to think about what she would do if what Nora said was true.
She wanted to ask him, but didn’t know how. All she could do was wait to find answers after returning. She got close to him for two reasons: first, she truly felt her attitude towards him today was wrong; second, she had a tiny bit of personal concern. She didn’t hope he would watch her too closely, so she could seek the truth herself. But until she discovered the truth herself, she chose to trust him.
"I wouldn’t." Joshua hugged her tightly, thinking if lying would send him to Inferno, he would accept it.
"I had them bring in the most delicious and unique food from Sydney, would you get up to have some?" Joshua thought that if he continued sitting on the bed like this, he would definitely have to take another cold shower, which wasn’t pleasant considering the weather.
Avery Jane wrapped herself in a long shawl. Joshua guessed she hadn’t brought much luggage, so he had brought her a few sets of clothes. As she walked to the table, she was still a little stunned.
The table was filled with a variety of everything, from French toast to milk tea, from wonton noodles to pork chop buns, from roasted goose to pigeon, and the fragrant egg puffs, curry fish balls, and even steaming plain congee with crispy fried fish skin.
Joshua pulled her to sit down: "These are all bought from places with the most authentic flavors, you should eat more."
Joshua looked at her fair face, although her nose was still a bit red, clearly from crying just now. A little girl indeed, venting her temper with him now, he wondered how her temper would be when she matured a few years later. He suddenly thought of the old Avery Jane, stubborn as a little beast, yet the current Avery Jane was getting harder to understand. What was she thinking behind her gentle demeanor? He couldn’t fathom.
After crying and fussing, she felt hungry too, eating the egg puffs in small bites. Though a bit cold, they still tasted delicious.
A bodyguard came in from outside: "Young Master, Mr. King has arrived, just at the door," the bodyguard whispered into Joshua’s ear.
Joshua glanced at him, and the bodyguard spoke into his earpiece: "You may [let him in]," then retreated to the corner.
"You really know how to enjoy, getting all these delicacies from all over Sydney, and then eating them in the presidential suite while watching the night view. Joshua, your life is getting more and more colorful," Alexander King entered the room, walking straight to the table unceremoniously, picking up a bowl of congee and eating.
"How did you know I came to Sydney? It seems I didn’t tell you." Joshua frowned, feeling his arrival disrupted the atmosphere.
"I’m not here to find you. I came to find my wife," Alexander said in a bad mood, just thinking about the matter annoyed him.
"Nora’s in Sydney too?" Joshua looked at Alexander’s expression, wanting to mock him a bit more.
Avery Jane’s fingers paused; Joshua knew Nora too, the one who was his best friend, and Nora was his wife? This relationship needed to be sorted out, which meant Nora really knew her and Joshua as well as their past? The delicious taste in her mouth suddenly turned bland.
"Yes." Alexander seemed disinclined to talk more about Nora: "Joshua, since you’re in Sydney, let’s go out for a drink tonight."
The night was deep, and Sydney’s nightlife was indeed bustling. After drinking some wine, he would get drunk, and at that time, he wouldn’t know what he might do. Just thinking about it made him feel at ease. In the Thompson Family’s place, he always felt like a live-in son-in-law, not enjoying enough. Tonight, after two drinks, he planned to completely "consume" that little bookworm, leaving nothing behind.
Joshua was uninterested in such a proposal, shrugged, and leaned lazily against the sofa: "You can go by yourself."
"How can we have fun without you? You’ve got so many tricks," Alexander almost wanted to curse. Was this how a brother should behave?
It was just going for a drink together, yet he made it seem like he wasn’t fond of fun: "Your record of winning over a dozen women in one night is something I fear I’ll never surpass in my life." There was a year, Joshua indulging wildly in nightclubs for some unknown reason. The nightclub owners treated him like a god of wealth, with earnings doubling when he was around. Women dressed as if they were wearing nothing, just to catch Eldest Young Master Hughes’s eye for a second glance.
For a moment, the atmosphere became awkward and tinged with something unspoken.
