Building the First Industrial Empire in Another World

Chapter 141: Breaking Ground Part 2

The closer the royal convoy came to Helmarte’s eastern district, the more apparent the sheer scale of the undertaking became.

What had once been an ordinary section of the capital had transformed almost overnight into an enormous construction zone. Temporary wooden fences enclosed several city blocks, while banners bearing the royal crest fluttered beside the crimson-and-gold standard of House Teucher. Hundreds of workers in clean uniforms stood in orderly formations behind the barriers, each group representing one of the many organizations participating in the reconstruction.

Engineers from Teucher Industrial Group stood alongside surveyors from the Royal Survey Office. Military engineers spoke quietly with royal architects while officials from the Ministry of Public Works mingled with representatives from the Water Authority, the newly established Helmarte Capital Infrastructure Authority, and the Merchant Guild. Nearly every institution connected to the project had sent delegates.

Before he had even stepped out of the carriage, Ernest realized this was no ordinary groundbreaking ceremony.

It was a declaration to the entire kingdom.

The convoy rolled to a smooth stop beside an enormous white pavilion erected at the center of the construction site.

Arthur opened the carriage door.

"We’ve arrived, Lord Ernest."

Ernest stepped onto the packed earth, followed by Hollen, Victor, and Anna. Almost immediately, a crowd of officials approached and bowed respectfully.

"Good morning, Lord Teucher."

"Congratulations, Lord Teucher."

"It’s an honor to meet you."

Ernest acknowledged each greeting with a polite nod. Not because he enjoyed the attention, but because he understood what today represented.

Beyond the barriers, the murmuring crowd grew noticeably louder. Thousands of citizens had gathered despite the early hour. Parents lifted children onto their shoulders while others leaned against wagons or climbed onto nearby platforms to catch a better view.

"Look, that’s Baron Teucher."

"He’s younger than I imagined."

"The inventor."

"The one who built Oriel."

"They say he’ll create tens of thousands of jobs."

The voices blended together until they became little more than the constant hum of anticipation.

Hollen leaned closer with an amused grin.

"You’ve become famous."

Ernest let out a quiet sigh.

"I preferred selling soap."

"You don’t get that choice anymore."

Before Ernest could reply, the sharp blast of a trumpet echoed across the grounds.

Every conversation stopped.

Royal guards immediately straightened, and a herald stepped forward before raising his voice.

"His Majesty!"

The massive royal carriage entered through the eastern gate under heavy escort. Mounted knights in polished silver armor rode on either side, their breastplates gleaming beneath the morning sun.

King Edward emerged first.

Behind him came Prime Minister Ashford, followed by nearly every minister Ernest had met the previous day.

The crowd erupted into applause.

The King acknowledged them with a wave before walking directly toward Ernest, a warm smile already forming on his face.

"Good morning, Baron Teucher. I trust you enjoyed your evening."

"I did, Your Majesty."

"And I hope you found time to rest."

Ernest smiled.

"I suspect I’ll need every bit of that energy."

King Edward laughed.

"I imagine you will."

Prime Minister Ashford joined them a moment later carrying a leather folder.

"I’ve already reviewed today’s schedule."

He handed the folder to Ernest.

"I took the liberty of shortening the ceremonial speeches."

Ernest raised an eyebrow.

"You did?"

Ashford’s smile widened.

"I had a feeling you’d rather begin building the city than spend an hour listening to politicians."

Hollen chuckled beside them.

"He’s learned quickly."

"I have," Ashford admitted before looking across the vast construction zone. "Besides, I believe everyone here would rather witness history than another collection of speeches."

King Edward nodded.

"I couldn’t agree more."

Soon afterward, the invited guests gathered beneath the pavilion while thousands of citizens remained beyond the barriers, where raised viewing platforms had been constructed specifically for the occasion.

Exactly as the cathedral bells struck nine, the master of ceremonies stepped onto the stage.

"Ladies and gentlemen, today marks the beginning of the greatest public works undertaking in the history of the Kingdom of Belfast."

Thunderous applause rolled across the square.

He waited patiently before continuing.

"Under the authority of His Majesty King Edward IV, and pursuant to the Royal Charter establishing the Helmarte Capital Infrastructure Authority, we officially commence the Five-Year Helmarte Reconstruction Program."

The applause returned, louder than before.

The master of ceremonies then invited the King to deliver the opening address.

King Edward approached the podium without a single prepared note. He spent a quiet moment looking across the thousands gathered before him before speaking in a calm, steady voice.

"When I first inherited this throne, I believed a king’s greatest responsibility was protecting his people. I still believe that."

His gaze slowly swept across the city beyond the construction site.

"But protecting our people is no longer enough. We must also build a kingdom worthy of those who will inherit it."

He gestured toward the streets surrounding them.

"For centuries, we accepted poor roads because they had always existed. We accepted disease because we believed it unavoidable. We accepted darkness because we assumed night would always belong to the shadows."

A gentle smile appeared on his face.

"Then one young engineer asked a question that few others ever dared to ask."

The King turned toward Ernest.

"What if we could do better?"

Silence settled over the square.

"It is that simple question that brings us here today."

The applause that followed was stronger than before.

When it finally subsided, King Edward extended his arm toward Ernest.

"Baron Ernest Teucher."

"The future of our capital now rests in your hands."

Every eye followed Ernest as he calmly climbed onto the stage.

Unlike the King, he carried several rolled engineering drawings beneath one arm.

A ripple of quiet laughter spread among the engineers watching below.

Of course he had brought blueprints.

He always did.

Ernest rested the rolled plans beside the podium before looking across the audience. His eyes moved past the nobles and ministers until they reached the ordinary citizens gathered outside the barriers.

"Your Majesty. Prime Minister. My Lords and Ladies... and to every citizen who calls Helmarte home."

His voice carried clearly across the construction grounds.

"Many people believe we’re here today to begin building roads, laying electrical cables, or installing water pipes."

He slowly shook his head.

"We’re not."

A murmur rippled through the audience.

"We’re here to build something much greater."

He paused just long enough for the silence to settle.

"We’re here to build the foundation upon which our children and grandchildren will live better lives than we ever did."

No one spoke.

"They won’t remember the names of every engineer who laid these pipes. They won’t remember the workers who paved these roads or poured the concrete beneath their feet."

A faint smile crossed his face.

"And that’s perfectly fine."

"Because true infrastructure succeeds when people forget it exists. When clean water reaches every home without a second thought. When lights turn on with the flip of a switch. When roads simply take families where they need to go."

He lifted one of the rolled plans.

"For the next five years, thousands of men and women will work side by side. They’ll dig beneath every major street, install clean water systems, construct sewers, lay electrical transmission lines, and rebuild our roads from the ground up."

He looked once more toward the city beyond the barriers.

"When all of this is finished, our descendants won’t think about the effort it took."

"They’ll simply call it home."

For a brief moment, complete silence filled the square.

Then someone began clapping.

Another joined.

Within seconds, thousands of hands echoed across the eastern district of Helmarte, the applause carrying far beyond the construction site itself.

King Edward stepped beside Ernest with a satisfied smile.

"I believe it’s time."

Ernest nodded.

"I agree, Your Majesty."

At his signal, attendants pulled away an enormous silk cloth covering the ceremonial platform.

Beneath it stood a polished granite foundation stone engraved with gold lettering.

THE HELMARTE CAPITAL RECONSTRUCTION PROGRAM

Commenced in the Year 1514

Under the Reign of His Majesty King Edward IV

Designed by Baron Ernest Teucher

Beside the monument rested several ceremonial silver shovels.

The King picked up the first before handing the second to Ernest. Prime Minister Ashford accepted the third, and together the three men stepped onto the prepared patch of earth.

The master of ceremonies raised his hand.

"By the authority vested in His Majesty... let the reconstruction of Helmarte begin."

The three shovels bit into the earth at the exact same moment.

Fresh soil turned.

Steam whistles echoed across the construction site.

Flags unfurled into the morning breeze.

Church bells rang throughout the capital.

Thousands of workers erupted into cheers.

And in that single moment, the Kingdom of Belfast witnessed the symbolic beginning of the greatest engineering project in its history.
