"It seemed appropriate."

Lord Ashford smiled faintly.

"The order to begin the electrical demonstration is being delivered by another one of your inventions."

"It saves several minutes."

The Prime Minister chuckled.

"I suppose it does."

Within moments, the telegraph key inside the station began clicking.

Samuel Wren stood beside the switchboard when the operator looked up from the receiver.

"Message from the royal carriage."

Samuel accepted the written slip.

He folded the paper once before looking around the control room.

Nearly every senior engineer in the project stood waiting.

Some had worked on the boilers.

The governor automatically reduced steam admission.

The enormous machine settled into a steady rhythm.

Unlike steam locomotives, there was nothing dramatic about it.

No frantic movement.

No violent shaking.

Only the smooth, relentless rotation expected from machinery designed to operate for years rather than hours.

Samuel looked toward the electrical operators.

"Synchronize."

The chief electrician nodded.

He watched both voltmeters carefully.

One represented the existing network powered by Unit One.

The other represented the newly started generator.

The needles slowly approached one another.

Phase alignment approached.

The synchronizing lamps mounted above the switchboard gradually dimmed.

The operator pulled the heavy knife switch downward.

Several kilometers away, the royal carriage rolled slowly into the central square of Arcada.

Evening had finally arrived.

The last orange glow of the sun lingered beyond the western hills while shadows settled between buildings.

Oil lamps flickered behind shop windows.

"I assume everything won’t illuminate at once."

"Why not?"

Ernest rested one hand against the carriage door.

"Because sudden demand places unnecessary stress upon the generators."

Both men turned toward him.

He continued.

"Imagine ordering every soldier in an army to cross the same bridge at exactly the same moment."

Lord Ashford answered first.

"It would collapse."

"Exactly."

"The bridge isn’t weak."

"No."

"There are simply too many men using it simultaneously."

Ernest nodded.

"Electricity behaves similarly."

He pointed toward the rows of lamp posts stretching into the distance.

"If every circuit connected at the same instant, the generators would experience a sudden surge in demand before their governors had time to respond."

King Edward frowned.

"So you connect them gradually."

"Exactly."

"One district?"

"No."

Ernest smiled.

"One feeder at a time."

He pointed toward the first avenue.

"The market."

Another street.

"The municipal offices."

Another.

"The workshop district."

Finally, the residential roads.

"Only after the primary circuits stabilize do we energize the smaller branches."

Lord Ashford looked genuinely impressed.

"So even turning on lights requires planning."

"Engineering usually does."

The Prime Minister laughed quietly.

"I should have expected that answer."

Before anyone spoke again, a distant church bell rang once.

Not the hour.

A signal.

Ernest immediately recognized it.

"The station has begun."

Far beyond the rooftops, hidden behind buildings and rows of trees, the first district switch closed.

Somewhere beneath the evening sky, copper conductors stretching across Arcada came alive with electricity.

The people standing around the square noticed nothing.

Electricity possessed no visible color.

No smoke.

No sound.

Only silent movement through copper.

Then, twenty meters away, the first street lamp awakened.

Its carbon filament glowed a faint reddish orange for less than a heartbeat before brightening steadily into a warm white light.

Gasps escaped from every direction.

Then another farther down the avenue.

The illumination spread through the street in sequence, moving away from the square like an invisible wave traveling beneath the copper conductors overhead.

One lamp.

Then another.

Shadows retreated from the road.

Shopfronts emerged from darkness.

Stone buildings reflected light that had never existed in this world before.

Children pointed upward.

Several merchants actually stepped into the middle of the road simply to stare.

One elderly woman crossed herself.

A young boy laughed aloud.

"It looks like daylight!"

The king slowly rose from his seat inside the carriage.

He simply watched as the next row of lamps ignited farther along the avenue.
