Less than a week after the Charter received the Royal Seal, Ernest stood inside a temporary railway planning office on the northern edge of Helmarte.

Spread across the drafting table was a map far less grand than the one shown at the palace. It bore no bold, confident strokes connecting major cities. Instead, six enlarged topographical sheets covered the table, dense with contour lines, marshlands, rock outcrops, property boundaries, and handwritten elevations compiled from decades of Royal Survey Office records.

Across two hundred and forty kilometers of countryside, there was no railway yet—only physical constraints.

Ernest rested his hands against the edge of the drafting table. "Now we discover whether the line I drew for the King actually works."

Samuel Wright, the chief surveyor, smiled from across the table. "I wondered when you would admit that."

Hollen Vane walked over, holding two cups of coffee. "One percent? Meaning a one-meter rise for every hundred meters traveled?"

"Yes," Ernest said.

"That sounds mild," Hollen remarked. "You’ve designed steam engines capable of hauling heavy steel castings, yet you’re concerned by a gentle slope?"

"I am concerned by the fuel cost of dragging forty coal wagons up that slope every day for fifty years," Ernest replied smoothly.

The third option—the green corridor—followed an old military road farther west before crossing two major rivers.

"What about this one?" Arthur asked.

"Generous terrain for most of the run," Samuel admitted grimly. "But it requires two massive river crossings. The northern gorge would require deep-water piers and high-clearance iron trusses. Technically feasible, but financially brutal."

Arthur immediately made a note in his ledger. "I already dislike the green route. I have learned to recognize Ernest’s ’expensive’ face."

"The final alignment cannot be decided from an office in Helmarte," Ernest said, closing the subject. "Maps provide general corridors, not precise alignments. We need field data: soil stability, high-water marks, rock formations, bridge abutment sites, and water sources for locomotive boilers."

By noon, the courtyard outside the warehouse had transformed into an expedition staging area.

Nearly sixty surveyors, civil engineers, draftsmen, teamsters, and laborers gathered alongside a dozen supply wagons. "For locomotive watering stations?" Samuel asked.

Arthur approached with a fresh folder. "Initial property records for the eastern valley. Hundreds of small farm plots, village commons, and church estates."

Ernest accepted the file with a small sigh. "The land acquisition will prove more complex than the engineering."

"The new statutory tribunal framework will protect us from extortionate land prices," Arthur reminded him.

"Lawful authority is a backup, Arthur," Ernest said. "I intend to negotiate fair private sales wherever possible. Unnecessary land disputes generate local hostility before the first rail is spiked."

A steam whistle sounded near the warehouse, signaling the expedition’s departure. Men boarded the wagons, drivers tightened reins, and the draft horses surged forward.

"So we have found our railway route?" Hollen asked, peering over his shoulder.
