For several seconds after Ernest revealed the proposed national railway standard, silence hung heavy over the Royal Council Chamber.
The number sat plainly at the center of the drawing: 1,435 millimeters.
To the ministers assembled around the long mahogany table, the dimension appeared almost absurdly hyper-specific. The Minister of Agriculture eventually leaned in, squinting at the precise figure.
"One thousand four hundred and thirty-five?" the Minister asked.
"Yes," Ernest confirmed.
"Not fourteen hundred?"
"No."
"Not fifteen hundred?"
"No."
The Minister frowned, looking up. "Why such an arbitrary figure?"
Ernest offered a faint, measured smile. "Because railways become exponentially more expensive when every regional engineer decides to invent his own gauge."
That earned several puzzled glances. The Minister of Justice folded his hands across his portfolio. "Elaborate, Baron."
Ernest moved the territorial map aside, replacing it with a simpler schematic showing three distinct sets of parallel rails. Above each set sat a stylized carriage frame: one narrow, one medium, one wide.
"Imagine three independent railway companies operating in adjacent provinces," Ernest explained, pointing to the first diagram. "Company A builds its track at a narrow gauge to minimize initial grading costs. Company B selects a broader gauge to accommodate wider, top-heavy cargo. Company C purchases equipment from a foreign founder who uses yet another width."
The Commerce Minister pulled his spectacles down his nose. "Individually, each choice might suit that company’s immediate budget."
"Precisely," Ernest agreed, tapping the three diagrams. "Individually, every decision appears logical to an isolated board of directors. Systemically, they create a national disaster."
Prime Minister Ashford grasped the point instantly. "Their rolling stock could never transition onto neighboring tracks."
"Never," Ernest said. "A locomotive built for a twelve-hundred-millimeter line cannot physically run on a sixteen-hundred-millimeter line; its wheel flanges would drop straight between the rails. The wheels simply will not align."
The Minister of Agriculture shrugged slightly. "Then passengers transfer to another train at the provincial junction."
Ernest looked directly at him. "And so does every sack of grain, Minister."
The Agriculture Minister’s expression stiffened.
"Every crate," Ernest continued calmly. "Every barrel of oil, every structural beam, every ton of metallurgical coal, every furnace casting. If two incompatible rail networks meet at a provincial border, every single ton of freight must be manually uncoupled, unloaded by hand, carried across a freight platform, and reloaded onto a different wagon."
The Commerce Minister winced. "Downtime. Extra labor costs. Warehousing fees. Cargo damage. Friction."
"Exactly," Ernest said. "All because the distance between two steel rails was treated as a matter of private preference rather than a fundamental state standard."
The precise measurement on the drafting paper no longer looked trivial.
Ashford leaned over the schematic. "So you are asking the Crown to mandate one universal track gauge for every future railway in Belfast?"
"Yes," Ernest said. "Even lines constructed by regional competitors."
The Commerce Minister looked surprised. "You would permit competing lines to link directly into your network?"
"If they meet national structural standards, absolutely," Ernest replied. "A railway network gains value through connectivity. If the northern mineral corridor eventually meets an eastern agricultural line, our freight wagons should roll straight through without stopping."
King Edward watched Ernest intently. One unified network, not isolated baronial transit fiefdoms. The strategic logic was undeniable.
The Minister of Defense, who had remained silent through most of the session, leaned forward. "What of the Royal Army, Baron Teucher?"
Ernest turned toward him. "In what respect, General?"
"If a border crisis or internal conflict occurs," the Defense Minister said, pointing to the map. "Could military transports utilize civilian tracks?"
"Provided the military rolling stock complies with standard loading gauges," Ernest answered. "Infantry, field artillery, supply wagons, and ammunition hoppers can be moved across the kingdom at twenty-five miles an hour."
The Defense Minister’s eyes sharpened. "And if regional railways used different gauges..."
"Troops could travel to the provincial line," Ernest said cleanly. "Their heavy guns and supply wagons could not—not without wasting days transferring equipment at junction yards."
The Defense Minister turned to King Edward. "Your Majesty... the military implications alone settle the matter."
Edward gave a single, slow nod.
The Minister of Public Works pointed back to the number. "Why specifically one thousand four hundred and thirty-five millimeters, Baron?"
Ernest paused briefly. He could hardly explain that he was implementing the standard gauge that dominated his previous world. Instead, he framed it in pure civil engineering logic.
"It strikes the exact thermodynamic and structural balance," Ernest explained. "It is wide enough to provide lateral stability for high-center-of-gravity freight cars, without requiring excessively wide earthcuts, massive bridge abutments, or oversized tunnels. It perfectly accommodates the locomotive boiler dimensions currently under development at our machine works."
Hollen, sitting beside Ernest, caught the subtle phrasing and muttered under his breath, "The future dimensions, he means."
"Are you confident in this standard?" the Public Works Minister asked.
"Confident enough," Ernest said, "that I want it codified into royal law before the first mile of commercial track is spiked to a tie."
Ernest then pulled the drafting sheet further down, revealing an extensive checklist of secondary standards: Wheel Flange Profiles, Maximum Axle Loads, Car Clearance Envelopes, Coupler Heights, Continuous Braking Systems, Bridge Clearances, and Boiler Pressure Regulations.
The Agriculture Minister stared at the list. "You have designed legislation for wagon couplers?"
"If wagon couplers sit at different heights on different lines," Ernest replied, "the wagons cannot be chained together into a single train. Standardizing mechanical interfaces is what transforms isolated machines into a unified system."
The Finance Minister tapped the section marked Boiler Inspection Protocols. "Why is the state required to inspect steam boilers?"
Ernest’s tone hardened. "A locomotive boiler is a pressure vessel operating at high temperatures. If improperly engineered, cast with flawed iron, or neglected by budget-cutting operators, it becomes a bomb. I will not have railway operators treating boiler safety as an optional operational expense."
Hollen nodded in sharp agreement. Production pressure was dangerous enough in a closed foundry floor; on a public line hauling passengers, a catastrophic boiler rupture would ruin the industry before it began.
"Every locomotive boiler must undergo hydrostatic testing before entering service," Ernest insisted. "Followed by mandatory periodic inspections by state-certified engineers. Any boiler failing inspection is pulled from the line immediately."
The Commerce Minister looked across at Ernest. "Even if removing the engine costs the operating company significant freight revenue?"
"Especially then," Ernest said quietly.
