Even the floor beside his chair had become a temporary filing system, occupied by neatly stacked force balance equations waiting for a second pass.

For nearly seventy-two hours, his entire universe had contracted down to a single machine.

Ernest leaned back in his leather chair, rubbing his bloodshot eyes before reaching blindly for his porcelain coffee cup. He took a sip, grimacing as cold, bitter sludge hit his tongue. He set it back down with a quiet clack.

He looked over the final general-assembly layout sitting in the center of the desk.

The locomotive didn’t just look like a drawing anymore. It looked... buildable.

Not finished, obviously. There were still hundreds of shop-floor detail drawings to draft, material callouts to finalize, and foundry tolerances to verify with Teucher Shop No. 1. But for the first time since he’d sat down with a blank sheet of paper, the math actually closed. The center of gravity was low enough, the adhesive weight on the drivers was solid, and the thermodynamic balance between the firebox and the boiler tubes worked.

It wasn’t a pipe dream. It was hardware.

A tired, quiet smirk pulled at the corner of his mouth.

"Not bad," he muttered to the empty room. "Not bad at all."

He gathered the primary sheets into a neat, chronological stack, aligning the edges with his palms.

Boiler shell. Double-walled firebox. Smokebox and blast pipe assembly. 40-inch cast-iron driving wheels. Stephenson linkage. Cylinders and crossheads. Heavy bar frame. Running gear.

Everything that made a steam locomotive a steam locomotive.

He stared at the top sheet for a long moment, nodding with the quiet, bone-deep satisfaction only an engineer feels when a chaotic system finally settles into order.

"Alright," he whispered, brushing a stray fleck of eraser dust off the vellum. "That’s the engine."

He brought the graphite point down toward the paper.

And stopped.

The pencil hovered two inches above the grid lines.

Ernest’s smile slowly, completely withered away.

His eyes drifted off the paper, staring blankly at the dark mahogany edge of the desk.

The locomotive couldn’t move.

He stood up, his knee joints popping in the quiet room, and walked over to the giant wall map of Belfast.

The thick, straight charcoal lines he’d aggressively drawn days ago still cut across the terrain, linking Helmarte to the northern coal basins, the western timber stands, and the eastern steel foundries. Until now, those lines had felt like a solution.

Now, looking at them through the cold lens of systems engineering, they looked like a terrifying list of unfulfilled prerequisites.

He closed his eyes and imagined it: the first 0-4-0 rolling off the assembly line at Teucher Machine Works. The paint still wet. Steam venting rhythmically from the brass safety valves. The furnace roaring. A proud crew sitting in the cab, waiting for the signal to pull the throttle.

And then... nothing.

Because the engine was sitting on dirt.

No steel rails. No cross-ties. No graded ballast bed. No coaling towers, water cranes, switching yards, or bridges rated for twenty-ton concentrated axle loads. The most advanced thermodynamic machine in the history of this world would be reduced to a three-thousand-gold stationary water heater.

Ernest let out another dry, amused laugh, resting his forehead against the wooden frame of the map.

"A brilliant achievement, Ernest," he mocked himself softly. "You’ve invented the world’s most sophisticated locomotive... with absolutely zero feet of track to run it on."

He turned back to the drafting table, grabbed a fresh sheet of heavy vellum, and pulled it dead-center.

No geometry this time. No wheel profiles or cylinder bores.

He uncapped his ink pen, pressing the nib firmly against the header space, and wrote in thick, dark block letters:

If the reconstruction of Helmarte had taught him one brutal, unyielding lesson, it was that water always wins. If you don’t give rain runoff a clean, armored path away from the trackbed, frost-heaves and mud-slumps would twist a straight mainline into a roller coaster in a single winter.

No shortcuts on the earthworks. None.

His pen kept moving, the scratch of steel on paper filling the study.

Questions began firing off in his head like popcorn in a hot pan.

Who trains the dispatchers to handle single-track block operations without crashing head-on?

How do we enforce gauge standardization across private merchant lines so every regional guild doesn’t build their own proprietary track width?

By the time he reached the third page, the locomotive wasn’t the main project anymore. It was just a single, metallic gear inside a massive, sprawling industrial clockwork.

Ernest slowly laid the pen down on the blotter, his hand cramping slightly.

He leaned back and looked at the mountain of notes, diagrams, and requirements spread across his room.

Only three days ago, he had thought he was just sitting down to design a neat steam engine.

Now, he saw the reality.

The engine was just the spark. The moment you laid a single rail down on the ground, you forced the entire kingdom to transform around it.

Teucher Steel would have to stop pouring simple architectural beams and learn how to continuously roll uniform T-rails. The lumber companies couldn’t just fell trees; they had to build chemical treatment vats to pressure-treat timber against rot. Quarries would have to install steam-powered rock crushers.

And then there were the people. You couldn’t run a railroad on peasant labor. You needed a whole new class of skilled labor: locomotive drivers who understood boiler sight-glasses, firemen who knew how to read a firebox bed, signalmen, track inspectors, dispatchers, gang bosses, and boiler shop machinists.

Thousands of specialized, high-paying technical jobs, conjured out of thin air by a single machine.

Ernest picked up the first sheet of the infrastructure master plan, reading the title again.

A slow, genuine smile spread across his tired face, and he let out a low, quiet chuckle that echoed in the quiet morning air.

"I haven’t designed a locomotive..." he whispered, looking out the window as the sun fully illuminated the bustling, unaware streets of Helmarte below.
