By the eighth week of field operations, Samuel’s teams reached the northern mining districts.
The landscape changed dramatically. Fertile farmland gave way to dense pine forests, which in turn yielded to scarred hillsides, haulage roads, spoil heaps, worker settlements, and the gray dust of the coal country.
For the first time, the survey crews began passing through property owned directly by Teucher Mining Company. Coal operations covered several valleys, while iron pits occupied the higher ridges farther east. Heavy wooden wagons drawn by four-horse teams crawled along the dirt roads, hauling coal toward regional storage yards.
Thomas Mercer watched a convoy of forty loaded wagons churn through the mud. "That is what our steam locomotives are going to replace."
"Not replace, Thomas," Samuel corrected, watching the horses strain against their harnesses. "Evolve."
A single freight locomotive handled by an engineer and a fireman could move the payload of two hundred wagons in a fraction of the time. The survey was no longer a theoretical exercise; it was the construction of a heavy industrial lifeline.
The northern terminus required its own dedicated site survey. Teucher Mining owned vast acreage in the district, but Samuel deliberately selected a site four kilometers away from the largest active coal pit.
"Why place the main terminal away from the primary pit?" Thomas asked as they staked the yard perimeter.
"Because this railway will outlive that specific coal seam," Samuel explained, opening the regional geological map. "Coal beds extend across three adjacent valleys, and iron deposits lie to the east. Future industrial branch lines will connect multiple mines to this central node."
Samuel marked out broad functional zones on his field map: freight yards, locomotive servicing sheds, coal storage trestles, water towers, repair shops, a future roundhouse, ore transfer sidings, freight warehouses, and a passenger terminal.
Thomas stared at the sprawling layout. "That isn’t a station, Mr. Wright. That is an entire industrial town."
Samuel smiled, remembering their station discussions near Millford. "Give it five years, Thomas. It will be."
Nine weeks after leaving Helmarte, Samuel finally turned south. He carried twelve field ledgers, thirty-seven detailed location sheets, six bridge engineering reports, four geological assessments, property registers, and one master roll containing the final preliminary center line.
When Samuel entered the railway planning office in Helmarte, his riding coat was faded, his boots caked in dried mud, and his face weathered by weeks of wind and sun. Under his arm rested a heavy leather drawing tube.
Ernest looked up from his desk, standing immediately. "Tell me that contains what I think it does, Samuel."
Samuel dropped the leather case onto the central table with a heavy thud. "That depends on whether you enjoy looking at expensive pieces of paper."
Arthur looked over from his ledger desk. "I don’t."
"Then you should probably step outside, Mr. Pendelton," Samuel smirked.
Samuel unbuckled the straps and unrolled the master alignment sheet across the full length of the table. "Nine weeks of field work. Eighty-nine survey personnel. More than four thousand level observations. Three hundred soil borings. Six major river surveys. Dozens of rejected deviations."
Ernest leaned over the parchment, tracing the dark, continuous line with his finger.
Helmarte sat at the southern terminus. The line curved gently north through the agricultural plains, passed through the low natural saddle, crossed the River Elmont at the rocky bluff site, swung east around Millford, followed the broad river valley, crossed and recrossed the northern river to avoid the mountain tunnel, and terminated cleanly at the northern mining hub.
No broad corridors. No speculative pencil routes. A definitive, engineered railway alignment.
"Total route length?" Ernest asked.
"Two hundred forty-seven point eight kilometers," Samuel reported.
Arthur groaned aloud. "Our initial estimate to the Royal Council was two hundred and forty!"
Samuel shrugged. "Take it up with the topography, Arthur."
"Maximum ruling gradient?" Ernest pressed.
"Zero point nine six percent across the entire main line."
Ernest paused, looking up. "The entire line stays beneath one percent?"
"Every kilometer of it," Samuel confirmed.
"Maximum curvature?"
"All main-line curves maintain radii above six hundred meters, save for two approach points that can be eased during final construction staking."
"Bridges?"
"Six major river spans, thirty-one medium bridges and heavy masonry culverts, and one hundred and twenty-six minor drainage crossings."
Arthur lowered his head into his hands. "Define ’major bridge,’ Samuel."
"Large enough that you will complain about the iron invoice," Samuel replied smoothly.
Hollen laughed softly from the corner armchair.
"Water facilities?" Ernest continued down his mental checklist.
"Four primary watering stations, including both termini, with intermediate supply tanks recommended at forty-kilometer intervals once locomotive consumption rates are established."
"Tunnels?"
Samuel’s smile widened. "Zero."
Ernest let out a long breath, closing his eyes. "Thank God."
For the next twelve days, the planning office operated without pause. Draftsmen worked under gas lamps late into the night, converting the location survey into formal construction documents. Engineers calculated earthwork volumes, cut-and-fill balances, haul distances, culvert capacities, bridge load limits, curve transitions, and land acquisition boundaries.
Hundreds of minor adjustments transformed the surveyed center line into a buildable civil contract. Ernest resisted the temptation to micro-manage every curve radius, though Samuel caught him adjusting a station approach angle one evening.
"Delegation, Baron," Samuel reminded him, taking the pencil from Ernest’s hand. "Go design your locomotives."
Hollen chuckled, and Ernest reluctantly surrendered the drawing.
Then came the final master capital estimate. Arthur entered the conference room holding the summary document, looking distinctly unwell.
"How severe?" Ernest asked.
Arthur placed the ledger on the table. "Millions of cubic meters of earthwork. Hundreds of thousands of seasoned timber ties. Nearly five hundred kilometers of high-tensile steel running rail when you include passing loops, sidings, and yards."
Ernest nodded calmly. "I expected those figures."
"Did you?" Arthur asked, opening the structural section. "The steel rail tonnage alone is staggering. Where are we going to source five hundred kilometers of heavy steel rail?"
"From the basin works," Ernest replied quietly, looking toward Hollen. "How far along are the converter foundations?"
Hollen stood up. "The first converter vessel foundation is poured. Blast Furnace One is progressing well; Blast Furnace Two is roughly three weeks behind. The coking batteries enter their drying fires next week, and the rolling mill foundations are complete."
The two grand enterprises touched one another directly for the first time. The railway alignment was finalized; construction crews could now begin clearing land, grading earthworks, cutting passes, and pouring bridge abutments. But within a year, those crews would require steel—thousands upon thousands of tons of heavy rails, switches, tie plates, bridge trusses, and wheel tires.
The railway was a clock, and the steelworks was racing against it.
Three days later, the final preliminary alignment went before the Royal Railway Commission. Five state commissioners sat around a long table covered in engineering blueprints. Samuel presented the civil survey, while Ernest addressed technical questions regarding safety limits, bridge clearances, common carrier tariffs, and property acquisitions.
After six hours of rigorous review, the Chairman of the Commission signed the master document. The four remaining commissioners followed suit, pressing the official state seal onto the margin.
Provisionally Approved.
The Belfast National Railway had its official, statutory route.
The following morning, Ernest, Hollen, and Samuel rode north out of Helmarte. They traveled only a few kilometers before Samuel raised his hand, signaling the carriage driver to stop.
Ernest stepped down onto the grassy verge beside the road. A small, weathered wooden stake stood near the ditch, marked with simple black lettering:

He turned back toward the waiting carriage, looking north one last time.
"Mobilize Teucher Construction," Ernest commanded. "Tomorrow, we break ground."
