The next major physical hurdle appeared at Kilometer 67: the River Elmont.

The reconnaissance team had identified it as the first major bridge structure on the northern trunk line. From the riverbank, the channel appeared deceptively manageable—approximately seventy meters wide from shore to shore during normal summer flow, moving lazily beneath willow trees.

Samuel knew better than to trust summer water levels. He walked up to an ancient oak tree near the bank, pointing to a dark, weathered water stain on the trunk nearly twelve feet above his head. Trapped debris remained wedged high in the lower branches.

"Historical high-water mark," Samuel told Thomas. "The river we are looking at today is not the river the bridge piers must survive in November."

He turned to the bridge engineering team. "Survey the entire floodplain. Run cross-sections every fifty meters, measure current velocity, and begin core borings for the pier foundations."

Two days later, the drill logs reached Samuel’s tent. The western bank offered solid gravel over bedded limestone—an excellent foundation. The eastern bank was equally stable. But beneath the center channel, the drill encountered deep, soft river silt for over eleven meters before touching solid rock.

"Deep silt foundations require extensive cofferdams, heavy timber piling, and continuous steam pumping," Thomas noted, reviewing the drill logs. "It will take months of hazardous foundation work in active water."

Samuel looked upstream. "What lies beyond that river bend?"

"Higher ground," Thomas checked his rough maps. "The river narrows between two rocky bluffs about a mile north."

Samuel rode up to the site before sunrise. The geography was immediately superior: the river narrowed to fifty-eight meters between two exposed granite shoulders, with solid bedrock visible right near the surface on both banks.

"This is the crossing," Samuel stated immediately.

"It shifts the alignment westward by more than a kilometer," Thomas noted.

"And cuts our bridge foundation costs in half while eliminating deep-water pier construction," Samuel replied. "Pull the survey stakes from the old approach and re-align the center line toward this channel."

Thomas blinked. "We have already staked nearly six kilometers of the original river approach, sir."

Samuel looked at him calmly. "A wooden stake is not sacred, Thomas. Neither is a drawing on vellum. If the physical ground proves your design wrong, you change the drawing. Engineering is not about defending your first draft; it is about finding the design that survives reality."

As the survey crews progressed farther north, however, they encountered an obstacle that no soil drill or transit level could measure.

A survey party had entered an open wheat field to establish a turning point after receiving verbal permission from the local magistrate. They had barely advanced fifty yards when an elderly farmer marched across the field toward them, eyes blazing.

"Stop right there!" the farmer demanded, pointing at a wooden centerline stake driven between two rows of wheat. "What is that timber doing in my field?"

The junior surveyor stepped forward politely. "It is a centerline marker for the Belfast National Railway survey, sir."

"I don’t care if it’s a marker for the King himself," the farmer declared, grabbing the timber and hauling it out of the dirt with a sharp tug. He threw it onto the grass. "My grandfather cleared this soil. My family farms it. No one drives stakes into my land without my consent."

News of the confrontation reached Samuel within an hour. He rode out to the field personally, finding a dozen local villagers gathered along the farm fence. They were not violent, but their expressions were guarded and anxious.

Samuel dismounted, leaving his horse by the road, and walked over to the farmer. "Good afternoon. I am Samuel Wright, chief surveyor for the railway."

"David Calder," the farmer replied, folding his arms tight over his chest. "I’m told your men intend to run an iron road through my crops."

Samuel did not pick up the fallen stake. Instead, he unrolled his working map across the fence rail. "We are not taking your land today, Mr. Calder. We are determining whether the terrain even permits a railway to pass through this valley."

"And if it does?" Calder pressed.

"Then the Belfast National Railway enters formal, private purchase negotiations with you," Samuel explained clearly. "We evaluate the fair market value of the land, compensate you for any disrupted crops or drainage, and provide formal crossings if the right-of-way divides your pastures."

Calder frowned, looking at the map. "And if I refuse to sell?"

"Then the matter goes before an independent Crown land tribunal established under the Royal Charter," Samuel said honestly. "The tribunal determines fair compensation after hearing your evidence and ours. But that process does not begin with surveyors threatening landholders."

Samuel looked at his survey team, his voice carrying clearly to the gathered villagers. "Baron Teucher’s explicit orders to every survey team are absolute: no threats, no coercion, and no improper use of state authority. We negotiate as fair buyers, or we do not proceed."

The tension among the villagers visibly eased. Calder looked down at the map, then at the theodolite standing on its brass tripod in the dirt. "What does that brass telescope do?"

"It measures horizontal and vertical angles to within seconds of an arc," Samuel explained.

Calder looked skeptical. "That small brass barrel?"

Samuel offered a faint smile. "Would you like to look through the glass?"

By late afternoon, half the village had gathered around the survey party. Children took turns looking through the telescope at distant fence posts, while local farmers asked practical questions about railway crossings, freight stations, and whether grain could be shipped directly to the capital markets.

Before the team departed, Calder walked over, picked up the centerline stake, and set it firmly back into the hole. "You can finish your measurements, Mr. Wright. But tell your buyers I expect a fair price for my wheat rows."

"You have my word," Samuel said.

The incident at Alden set the pattern for the rest of the valley. Word of the survey team’s conduct spread faster than the crews themselves. Merchants in regional towns were particularly eager, gathering around the surveyors to ask where freight depots would be located.

One major town created a unique logistical dilemma: Millford, a thriving market center of eleven thousand residents. The easiest engineering alignment bypassed the town four kilometers to the east over flat, open pastureland. Diverting the main line directly through Millford required two sharp curves, an expensive land acquisition through built-up streets, and speed restrictions for passing freight trains.

Samuel sent the detailed survey options back to Helmarte.

Ernest reviewed the Millford layout with Arthur in his office.

"The main line should not cut directly through the center of Millford," Ernest concluded, drawing a precise circle on the open land four kilometers east of the town boundary. "We construct the primary passenger terminal and freight yards right here on the open plain."

Arthur frowned. "Four kilometers outside the town? The local town council will complain bitterly about the distance."

"They will complain for six months," Ernest replied smoothly. "Then merchants will build warehouses beside our freight yards. Housing will follow the road toward the terminal. Hotels, shops, and secondary manufacturing will establish themselves along the transit corridor."

Ernest tapped the open land between Millford and the proposed station site. "The railway station does not need to crowd into the old town center, Arthur. Within ten years, Millford will grow out to meet the station."

Arthur stared at the layout, the broader urban economic reality clicking into place. The Belfast National Railway was not merely connecting existing settlements; it was establishing the geographic axis around which future commerce, industry, and population growth would organize themselves for generations to come.

Ernest leaned back in his armchair, looking out the window toward the northern horizon where the survey crews were driving stakes into the earth.

"Tell Samuel to evaluate every proposed station site under the same criteria," Ernest instructed. "Available land, road access, water supply, and long-term industrial expansion. We are not just laying track, Arthur. We are drawing the future map of the kingdom."
