Chapter 50: Mercenary Guild

Ni Mengxue: "..." Good, what a great solution. I feel so moved that I want to slap your face.
"Stop joking around." She waved her hand and decided to focus on her side plan.

The next day, Ni Mengxue first went to the mercenary group. Su Yun grinned and walked up to her. "Miss Ni! It has been such a long time since you visited. We almost thought something happened to you."
"Lead the way." Ignoring her flattery, Ni Mengxue asserted. Even without investigating, she had already noticed the tense atmosphere of the base.
Along the way, she heard how Tian Ji had predicted that the date for the zombie tide’s arrival had been pushed forward due to an unknown variable.
She wanted to have more trump cards before she reached her own base. Especially after she had finished harvesting her first batch of vegetables.
Now she had rice, garlic, spinach, lettuce, radish, turnip, wheat, green peas, and cucumber. There was also eggplant, corn, capsicum, cauliflower, broccoli, yam, pumpkin, ginger, and mint.
However, they still hadn’t matured yet. Thinking about sugar, she decided to grow sugarcane and sugar beets too. There were also fruits.
She had planned to buy fruit trees. But to unlock them, she would need 5000 merit points. Since she was very close to opening up the industrial workshop, she refrained from buying them.
"Here!" Su Yun chirped and broke her train of thought. The herbal scent relaxed her mind to a certain extent, and she checked them one by one.
Her heart danced in joy when she saw a green herb with purple flowers and purple roots. Healing potions can be made from it! There were also herbs with a charcoal fragrance. In her world, they were called fire herbs.
Usually, those with the fire element can have their power boosted for 30 minutes with the fire herb potion. Even though she had a limited number of potions, she was the inventor of all of them.
Meaning, she can continue to experiment and won’t have to worry about not remembering their formula.
She also learnt the fact that the poison fruit of this world can be made into an awakening potion! This was still a hypothesis. To test it out, she would need to find the experiments that Qiao Erlang had undergone.
With useful herbs, there were certain useless herbs too, but she wasn’t worried. Those that can’t be applied can be eaten; if they can’t be eaten, they can be used in other items.
"Are you satisfied, miss?" Su Yun asked eagerly.
"I am. But I keep on feeling as if someone has tampered with the result. What do you think, Miss Su?" Ni Mengxue gave a half smile.
"I don’t understand what kind of tampering you mean." Su Yun smiled calmly.
"You have taken away all the poison fruit and left behind the herb root." Ni Mengxue pointed out, "Even if you want to scheme against me, have some brains."
Su Yun’s face flushed red, and she quickly quibbled, "Miss Ni, you must be misunderstanding us! We thought you might get poisoned, and hence, we took it away. I will ask my husband to get it for you."
"Hm? Sure." Ni Mengxue gave a faint smile that didn’t reach her eyes.
On finishing up, she turned to leave, but Su Yun stopped her. "Miss, you don’t want to assign any new mission?"
"No", Ni Mengxue gave a half smile. "I am worried that the next time, purple and red herbs won’t reach me. And maybe some unscrupulous people might overcharge me in the name of difficulty."
Ignoring the scrunched-up face of Su Yun, she walked away. The surrounding mercenary group gave dirty looks to Su Yun.
Almost all of them cursed her for being greedy! This task of gathering herbs was far easier than escorting, and such an opportunity was taken away because of her!
Su Yun shouted with a red face, "What are you all looking for, huh? She was using me as an excuse; she wanted to stop this mission long ago!"
Once everyone looked away, Su Yun stared at Ni Mengxue’s back with hatred.
"Honestly, we should leave this place? She shortchanges us, and whenever she sees a young handsome guy, she makes them her husband!" Hina murmured.
Her beautiful brown hair was tied in a bun, and the black crop top paired with black shorts accentuated her figure. Her tan skin glistened under the sunlight as her obsidian eyes remained trained on Su Yun.
"Easy to say for you. You can just rely on your future husband for food, but what about us? Even though she is evil, we at least get paid for tasks under her!" Zhu Wang fixed his buzz-cut hair and growled.
Though lean, he looked attractive due to his clean shave and his tall stature.
"According to my statistics, she is giving the right advice," Max fixed his glasses and wrote down something in his book. With a small stature and fair skin, he was almost mistaken for a woman the first time he joined the group.
"Sigh... even if it is the right advice, what should we do once we leave?" Dong Wei sharpened his knife, his biceps peeking through his black shirt at every movement, before he finally sighed and said,
"We can complain all we want, but the truth is that we still need her missions."
Hina crossed her arms and frowned. "Then what about the other bases? Surely there are other mercenary guilds where we can earn enough to survive."
"It has been 5 years since the apocalypse; do you seriously think there would be any mercenary guild that would have vacancies?" Zhu Wang murmured.
"Statistically, if any of the mercenary groups of the Mercenary Guild feel that another mercenary group is invading their territory, they will either refuse to accept new groups or deliberately assign dangerous missions to weaken them."
Max pushed his glasses up and calmly explained,
"After five years of the apocalypse, resources have become more valuable than people, so no established mercenary guild would willingly share their source of income with outsiders."
