Chapter 13: Allies
Ni Mengxue blinked before smiling. "Well, the answer depends on your answer."
"What?"
"Do you like the current me or the previous me?" Her question was like a breeze, and yet Lu Yucai understood the hidden meaning.
If he liked the current Ni Mengxue, then she wasn’t the real Ni Mengxue of this world, but if he liked the previous Ni Mengxue, then she was Ni Mengxue.
"Why..." It was unfathomable to Lu Yucai why an alien soul was so good to him, to the point that... it hurts.
"Because I love you." Ni Mengxue grinned like a fool, and yet her heart throbbed with pain.
In her previous life, while she was going through her first heartbreak and was depressed, her family members enrolled her in the military.
Having lost all of her will to live, she refused to leave her room. All the instructors assigned to her either suffered until they resigned or ran away when her terrible temper kicked in.
Her recklessness reached the level where she used to cut her wrist or take poison pills, and sometimes she even fought against robots with grandmaster-level martial arts to die accidentally.
Sometimes she even thought of exploding the entire planet with her. If her lover wasn’t alive, why were others?
But because she was heavily monitored, she couldn’t finish making the explosives. When she was caught again making a time bomb again, she was thrown under General Lu Yucai.
He was the most loyal dog to the king and the sharpest weapon the military had ever produced. She had planned to make things difficult for him and kill him if necessary.
She expected him to defend the royal family, and yet when they met, he had asked softly, "You must be in pain; he was your world. Don’t worry, we will get justice for him."
He understood her when no one did. While the world saw her as a spoilt brat, he saw the heart-wrenching pain hidden in the depths of her eyes.
That day, she cried. Not because someone sympathised with her, but rather... she understood... her first love was gone and he wouldn’t return, no matter what she did.
General Lu stayed beside her, comforted her, and promised her justice no one cared for. He taught her martial arts, taught her to live again, and demanded justice for her first love.
Together, they grew a garden full of bellrose flowers, just because she felt the barracks were a very rigid place.
The loyal dog of the royal family rebelled for the first time... and the reason was her. How could she not fall in love?
She was moved and became head over heels for him. She planned a grand confession and pursued him.
And every time she saw his ear turning red when she flirted with him, she started to imagine a beautiful future alongside him.
In the end... he died, taking away the blooming fields of Bellrose. A part of her died that day... no, she almost died that day... but fate played a cruel trick on her.
Before dying, he made her promise, "Xue’er... if you truly love me... you will not commit suicide... I want you to live at least 300 years! Live for me, darling; love someone else, and I will wait for you in the afterlife. If you dare... not... I will... find someone... else."
She did. It was tough, and every day she felt like a shard of glass was etched in her heart... but she lived anyway. Because she loved him.
The current Lu Yucai might not have memory of the past, but he was the reincarnation of General Lu.
And they had met again... so for her, this novel she had transmigrated to was the afterlife he had promised.
"That’s a lie," Lu Yucai bluntly replied.
"Hm? Well, whatever justifies what I am going to do next." She smiled, her heart at ease.
Leaning toward his lips, she pecked him softly. "Hubby~, let’s live a good life together."
He could feel his heart stopping and his breath hitching; however, his mind mocked him.
’Seriously? Are you going to believe her? What do you even have to make yourself lovable? A cripple, with a hideous birthmark... she must pity you!’
With that thought, Lu Yucai faced away from Ni Mengxue and fell onto the bed.
Ni Mengxue gave a wry smile and started to pack up. Once done, she went to the shanty house across her.
Ruo Chiwu was surprised at Ni Mengxue’s sudden visit and asked with a smile, "Mengxue? Do you need something from me?"
"Yes. I am going to leave this place. The place I had rented is a building, and so I am here to ask if you are interested in following me." Ni Mengxue sincerely hoped that Ruo Chiwu would agree.
Apocalypse was dangerous and mysterious; if she wanted to create a safe space of her own and live a peaceful life, the first thing she needed to do was to have allies.
Ruo Chiwu had the manpower she was lacking. Having Aunt Ruo with her can ease the burden, and she can also repay Ruo Chiwu for her help till now.
"You... child, there is no need to bring me along. An extra mouth to feed would only make things troublesome."
Ni Mengxue only smiled. "I would take that as a yes. Here is the address; you can shift whenever you feel you are ready."
After saying her piece, she left, and the doubt in her heart was confirmed.
’Ruo Chiwu knows about the soul exchange... or the space. No way she can remain this calm after knowing about me renting a place.’
Eventually Ruo Chiwu assigned her fourth and fifth husbands to help with the shift.
In one afternoon, Lu Yucai realised how capable his new wife was. The apartment that he only dared to see from afar now became his temporary home!
It was situated within the centre of the base and had good protection, with a pleasant fragrance.
