Chapter 19: Pleading
That evening, she asked Chiwu to buy various large boulders, and once she got them, she returned to the apartment.
Feeling hungry, she decided to make something filling and quick; however, what awaited her was a table full of dishes.
She saw Lu Yucai sitting on the chair, and her eyes flashed as a wave of nostalgia passed over her. ’Live in the present; don’t make him misunderstand that he is some kind of substitute.’
She had read far too many reincarnation novels to make such a rookie mistake.
"Hubby, you are so good to me! You made me dinner." She took the seat opposite to him and looked at him with a huge smile.
Lu Yucai calmly stated, "From now on, I will do the cooking since you are providing everything. No need to do the house chores."
Ni Mengxue arched a brow before smiling like a sly fox, "Hubby~ Are you trying to become a househusband? I feel wet; what should I do?"
Lu Yucai: "..." Damn this woman! She could say bold words with such innocence...
Seeing his ears turning red, she bit her lips to stop herself from smiling.
"Eat!" He said sternly and buried his face in the bowl, resembling the shy general he was in her past life.
"One day I will bed this man and eat him up completely..." She thought, but when she heard coughing and choking, she realized that she had voiced out her thoughts.
Shit!
She quickly passed him a glass of water and patted his back. When he finally looked better and glared at her, she could only shamelessly say,
"Glare one more time, and you will see how red your face can become."
"You... you are shameless!" Lu Yucai’s face turned red, and he looked away.
Seeing that he wasn’t pressing for any explanation, she heaved a sigh of relief and started to eat her dinner, completely unaware of his inner thoughts.
’This woman... she is a wolf through and through! I need to protect my body from her... however... she does look sexy when she says those words... damn it! Why is my heart beating so fast? Surely... she won’t do as she says, right?’
A trace of disappointment flashed in his eyes. When the dinner was over, Ni Mengxue wanted to clear the dishes, but Lu Yucai stopped her.
"You are injured. Take rest."
"No need to worry; I will be fine within the next few hours." She wasn’t lying. In the evening, she was bleeding, and now her injuries have almost scabbed over.
From the moment she had bound with the system, her self-healing abilities had become better.
"I am planning to take a part-time job to help you with the expenses." Lu Yucai changed the subject and started to clear the dishes.
"No need, just focus on recovering well. When you recover, you can pay me back slowly." She waved her hand nonchalantly.
"It would never recover." A trace of sorrow appeared in Lu Yucai’s eyes. "You might think that your medicines could work, but they’re useless. Even the healers of my world are helpless... let alone you."
"Hm... I belong to an era that was medically advanced, so healing your legs is just a matter of time. Even the dangerous diseases of your life are just a breeze to me." She flashed him a smile.
Lu Yucai froze for a few seconds before saying softly, "We are going to divorce anyway. Why waste your time? Won’t you gain anything out of me?"
I am going to die anyway... so why act so good toward me?
He didn’t dare say those words because he was worried that Ni Mengxue might end up becoming angry.
Ni Mengxue flinched at the word "divorce" but quickly recovered. "Sweetheart, every time you say a word like ’divorce’... it breaks my heart! So next time you do, I will kiss you breathless, tease you, and then... walk away."
Lu Yucai gnashed his teeth. "Can you talk like a normal person for once?"
"Let me think about it... no. Especially when it’s you whom I am talking about." She placed her hand on his wheelchair and leaned just enough to smell his unique cedarwood fragrance.
He could only look away because his instincts were telling him... if he stared at her... he might fall in love with her.
"Even if we divorce," the bitterness in her voice broke his train of thought, "I would hope that you live a good life. So only when you are healed and have enough to live a good life would I divorce you."
When the familiar rose scent slowly drifted away from him, he heard her soft voice, "If you feel uncomfortable from touches and words... I won’t say it... just don’t mention divorce, okay?"
The pleading hidden in her voice made him feel like someone had stabbed him hard in his chest.
When he looked over, he saw her embarrassed and scared look, and for the first time, the thought of dying vanished from his mind.
’If I leave this world... would she be sad like this too? Do I mean so much to her?’
