Lu Yucai stared at him for several seconds. Then he slowly turned toward Ni Mengxue.

His eyes clearly demanded an explanation. Ni Mengxue silently handed him a document.

"You’ll understand after reading this."

Then she immediately turned around and walked toward the room.

She genuinely didn’t know how to face him. She was already embarrassed enough.

God knew what kind of emotional conversation would happen between Lu Yucai and the two children once he learnt the truth.

She wasn’t going to voluntarily sign herself up for that kind of emotional drama.

Behind her, Lu Yucai opened the document.

His expression slowly changed. The more he read, the more stunned he became.

Feng Lian’s husband, the man who had gone out to fight the zombie horde and eventually turned into a zombie, was actually the orphanage director.

And everything had happened because of Rong Qing’s rumours and schemes.

More importantly, Fu Sinan and Fu Jing were the orphanage director’s sons.

Lu Yucai’s fingers tightened around the document. His eyes slowly became moist.

He looked at the two boys standing before him. For a moment, he seemed unable to speak.

Then his voice trembled. "From now on, I am your godfather."

Fu Sinan’s eyes immediately brightened. He bowed deeply. "Thank you, Uncle."

Lu Yucai paused. Seeing how formal the boy was being, a strange feeling flashed through his eyes.

"Don’t be so formal."

He pointed toward the empty rooms. "Take your time. You two should go and rest."

There were so many empty rooms in the place that even if Ni Mengxue brought another ten or twenty people into the base, it would still be difficult to fill them all.

However, Fu Sinan shook his head. "No. We already have somewhere to live."

He hesitated before looking at Lu Yucai. "Uncle, if you don’t mind, could you lend us some food?"

Lu Yucai frowned. "Don’t you have anything to eat?"

He immediately stood up. "Wait for me. I’ll go cook something."

Fu Sinan hurriedly shook his head. "Not that kind of food."

Lu Yucai paused. Fu Sinan continued seriously.

"I want something I can exchange for currency."

He lowered his voice. "Or... could you lend me some zombie crystals?"

Lu Yucai’s expression became serious.

"I want to take revenge on the people who harmed my father."

For a moment, the room became silent. Lu Yucai stared at the boy before him before smiling,

"You don’t need to worry about that. I’ll deal with them."

Fu Sinan froze. He immediately knelt down and bowed. "I’ll remember this kindness."

A faint frown appeared between Lu Yucai’s brows.

This child was far too formal. However, he didn’t say anything and merely nodded.

"All right. Do whatever makes you comfortable."

Fu Jing, who had been quietly standing beside his brother, suddenly blinked.

He stared at Lu Yucai curiously.

"Are you Uncle Lu?"

Lu Yucai’s expression softened. "You know about me?"

Fu Jing nodded innocently.

"Our father used to tell us about Uncle Lu. He said you were very mischievous when you were little."

Lu Yucai’s eyes immediately became moist.

He quickly looked toward the ceiling, desperately trying to control his emotions.

Meanwhile, Fu Sinan quietly observed his reaction.

The uneasiness that had been lingering in his heart slowly weakened.

He still didn’t want to admit it, but he had been suspicious of Lu Yucai’s intentions.

He had been wondering why this stranger would suddenly be willing to help them.

That was why he had deliberately maintained such a distant and formal attitude.

In his mind, Lu Yucai was nothing more than a protective umbrella.

He would rely on him until he became an adult.

And once he was old enough, he would leave.

.............

After Fu Sinan and others left, Lu Yucai knocked on Ni Mengxue’s door. A few seconds later, Ni Mengxue finally came outside. Before she could say anything, he spoke first.

"I’m sorry."

Ni Mengxue paused, her body relaxing when the familiar cedarwood fragrance wafted near her. Lu Yucai lowered his eyes.

"I shouldn’t have said those things earlier. I shouldn’t have hurt your feelings. I was wrong."

Seeing his sincere expression, Ni Mengxue’s heart softened. She sighed. "All right. Come inside. Explain to me why you opposed so much..."

She knew he wasn’t the type of person who would rashly announce his verdict without experiencing it before.

Lu Yucai nodded. Once they were inside, he remained silent for a few seconds before slowly speaking.

"There was once a soldier under my command named Huang Wen."

His expression became distant as he recalled the past. "One day, he came to ask Commander Song Yan for leave."

.....................

Inside a dusty makeshift tent, Huang Wen stood straight before Song Yan’s tent. "Commander, I would like to request leave for a few days."

Song Yan didn’t even look up from the documents in his hands. "Denied."

Huang Wen’s expression became anxious. "Commander, my wife’s pregnancy is..."

Song Yan finally raised his head, his expression calm but the impatience in his eyes couldn’t be ignored. "What about it?"

Huang Wen hesitated before saying, "Something is wrong with the pregnancy. We’re planning to visit a Healer."

Song Yan’s eyebrows furrowed.

Healers possessed extremely high status within the base. Ordinary people might have to wait several days, or even longer, before getting an opportunity to meet one.

After thinking for a moment, Song Yan sighed. "Fine. I’ll approve it."

His gaze shifted toward the entrance of the tent. Lu Yucai was standing there. Song Yan had clearly noticed him looking at Huang Wen.

Perhaps because of that, he had changed his mind. Huang Wen immediately bowed. "Thank you, Commander!"

He quickly walked out. A moment later, Lu Yucai followed him. "Huang Wen."

Huang Wen turned around. "Soldier Lu?"

"What happened?"

Lu Yucai frowned. "As far as I know, your wife was perfectly fine before. How did her pregnancy suddenly become unstable?"

Huang Wen sighed. "My wife went out for a stroll a few days ago. She accidentally came into contact with a rotten corpse."
