Chapter 7: Fair Shallow Land
After Lu Yucai ate the porridge, she presented him with the brewed medicine.
Without questioning, he drank the medicine and then fell asleep. It was clear that he didn’t want to chat with Ni Mengxue at all.
Mengxue, tired from all the running, slept on the floor, just like the last night.
.....
The next day, after breakfast and giving medicine to Lu Yucai, she set off for Aunt Ruo Chiwu’s house.
"Aunt, are you inside?" She knocked on the door.
Ruo Chiwu’s door swung open, and her main husband Fu Lin emerged.
"Miss Ni? How may I help you?" Even though he was polite on the surface, Ni Mngxue could see the hidden disdain in his eyes.
"Can you call Aunt Ruo? I want her help."
"Of course you do." Fu Lin still smiled, but the sarcasm in his voice was hard to ignore.
She understood how Fu Lin might be feeling; after all, the original host hardly ever appreciated Ruo Chiwu’s efforts.
She watched as he walked back inside and eventually returned with Ruo Chiwu.
"Mengxue, why are you standing outside? Come in! I will make breakfast for you!" She ushered with a motherly smile.
Ni Mengxue remained rooted in her spot and shook her head. "I already had breakfast. I want to buy some land, and hence, I approached you."
"Land? Mengxue, you already own more than 100 acres of land. If you have money, just buy something to eat."
"100 acres of land?" This time, it was Ni Mengxue’s turn to be surprised. She didn’t possess much memory of the original host, but she never thought that she was so rich!
But how was that possible? Wasn’t the original Ni Mengxue cannon fodder?
"Yes. Did you forget? According to the inheritance left by your grandfather, you will inherit 25 acres of land every time you get married." Ruo Chiwu explained patiently.
"So, do you know the location or coordinates of these lands? Is there any land that is near a lake or a water body?" Ni Mengxue pressed.
Ruo Chiwu looked at her surroundings and dragged Ni Mengxue inside. "Let’s talk inside."
Understanding her concern, Ni Mengxue didn’t resist. Ruo Chiwu’s shanty house was exactly like Ni Mengxue’s.
The only difference was that it was much cleaner and had more than one room.
On the dining table, Ruo Chiwu’s second and third husbands were devouring the porridge.
Ni Mengxue almost felt that they had married Ruo Chiwu just to eat enough food.
In this novel’s setting, the ratio of females to males was drastically low. For every 100,000 males, there was only 1 female.
Hence, the females of this world had certain privileges. Before the apocalypse, as long as a female got married to a male, she would be rewarded with money, high status, and even expensive gifts.
After the apocalypse, as long as a female marries a male, she would be allocated a certain amount of food, ensuring her survival in the apocalypse.
The more marriages they have, the higher the reward. And it wasn’t unheard of for a male to marry a female for food.
Of course, there were limits and conditions. Each female must have 4 males as their husband, and they could marry at most 100 men.
100 men were a crazy number, and even Ni Mengxue was stunned by the author’s wild thoughts. However, it doesn’t matter to her.
She doesn’t plan to take another husband. She might even divorce them if they feel too disgusted with her.
"Sit here. Lin’er, serve her porridge." Ruo Chiwu’s soft cooing broke Ni Mengxue’s train of thought.
"No! Let’s talk about important matters first." Ni Mengxue rejected.
Ruo Chiwu sighed but finally stopped. "There is indeed a land that is near the lake."
Ni Mengxue was thrilled. She could now finish the main mission and submission together!
"However, these lakes aren’t as pure as they used to. They are infected by the zombie virus and have mutated animals."
Ni Mengxue frowned before asking, "So is there no water body that is clean anymore?"
Seeing Ruo Chiwu nod, she asked a few more questions before standing up. "I will take my leave first."
"You child! At least eat something!" Ni Mengxue waved her hand as she left in a hurry.
"Some other day."
..........
Returning to her own shanty house, Ni Mengxue entered her space.
Clicking on the main mission, she was led to an asset interface, which surprised her. Since Ruo Chiwu had told her about the coordinates, she quickly entered them and clicked on done.
According to Ruo Chiwu, Fair Shallow Land not only had a lake near it but was empty, making construction easy.
[Ding! Fair Shallow Area has been chosen as the sanctuary land. Reward granted!]
[Ding! The water source has been chosen! Reward has been granted.]
The next second, a holographic scene of Fair Shallow Land appeared in front of Ni Mengxue.
The land was 200km away from her current location, but she didn’t plan on relocating.
[Congratulations, host, on unlocking the system store!]
Ni Mengxue opened the system store interface, her body relaxing due to the fresh air and cool breeze.
The system store had five tabs. Vegetable seeds, construction material, blueprints, livestock, and medicine.
Other than the construction material and the blueprint section, all the other sections were grayish.
Opening the blueprint section, she was offered a blueprint for a 4-floor building. In the description section, it was stated that concrete, wood, glass, steel, and bricks would be required to build it.
After reading a bit more, Ni Mengxue understood that the blueprints could either be automatically built by paying merit points or she could hire workers and pay them with zombie crystals or food.
The blueprint itself was free, but the main concern was materials. She currently owns 500 or so merit points; surely it wouldn’t be enough to build an entire building.
"System, if I provide only half of the materials for the building, what would happen? And is there any way to earn merit points quickly?"
