Chapter 536 - 266: Provocation
The Gard Car left the office building and headed west, soon leaving Weiguang District behind. It entered the Deep Unexplored District, the area with the densest vegetation.
Chen Chuan saw Xiaojin looking out the window with curiosity and asked, "Xiaojin, do you not get out much?"
Chen Xiaojin said, "Our nanny says it’s dangerous outside and that I shouldn’t go out without protection. I’ve only ever been allowed in Weiguang District; I’ve never been to any of the others."
Chen Chuan said, "Actually, your nanny is right."
Public security in Central City was decent enough in Weiguang District, but it was a different story in other places. If he ran into any violent types, they wouldn’t stop to ask whose son Xiaojin was.
Over half an hour later, the car stopped in front of Lu Fang’s Fighting Hall.
He had already used his Realm Token to tell Lu Fang he was coming, so after he parked and led Xiaojin up the steps, he saw Lu Fang emerging from inside to greet them.
When Lu Fang saw him, however, he was slightly taken aback.
They hadn’t seen each other in the two months since before the New Year, but Chen Chuan felt different to him now. There seemed to be a tangible light in his eyes.
It wasn’t a sharp, aggressive aura, but he felt an unnerving power emanating from him, creating an invisible pressure in his own heart.
This was a clear sign that Chen Chuan’s abilities had improved once more.
’This is what talent looks like,’ he lamented inwardly. ’I’ve been working so hard, but I still feel a long way from the Third Limit. Meanwhile, he seems to make a leap forward every time I see him.’
He stepped forward to greet Chen Chuan, then looked at Chen Xiaojin. "This must be the Xiaojin you mentioned?"
"This is Xiaojin," Chen Chuan said. "Xiaojin, this is Mr. Lu. You’ll be studying with him from now on."
Lu Fang had been teaching here for over a year, handling children and teenagers of all ages, so he’d amassed a great deal of teaching experience. More importantly, he was a man of good character and very responsible, which was the most reassuring thing of all.
Besides, there were plenty of others here around Xiaojin’s age for him to spar with.
Chen Xiaojin called out, "Mr. Lu."
Lu Fang looked at him and said in surprise, "Xiaojin has already started training?"
Chen Chuan said, "An elder in his family is a Fighter."
Lu Fang didn’t ask why the boy was being brought to him when he already had a Fighter in the family. He figured there had to be a reason.
’Once you start training, you can be considered a Fighter,’ he thought. ’Not many people like that continue training at the hall, and most of them are older than Xiaojin. There are only three or four, all told, but I can still make arrangements.’
He ushered Chen Chuan and Xiaojin into the Fighting Hall and used his Realm Token to contact someone. A moment later, a young man of seventeen or eighteen walked in. He cupped his fist and said, "Brother Lu."
Lu Fang said, "Chu Wu, this is Xiaojin. Spar with him for a bit." Then he said to Chen Xiaojin, "Xiaojin, give it a try. I want to see your fundamentals."
"Alright!"
Chen Xiaojin had never fought against anyone before; he had always trained alone. Facing Chu Wu, he was nervous but also eager to try.
The two looked at each other. Chen Xiaojin made the first move, but as soon as he threw a punch, Chu Wu grabbed his arm and easily threw him to the ground.
He scrambled back to his feet, only to be thrown down again by Chu Wu. Undiscouraged, he got up and went at it again.
But the gap in their combat experience was too wide. After Xiaojin had been thrown more than ten times, Lu Fang told them to stop. He started pointing out Xiaojin’s mistakes and explaining how to spot an opening. He didn’t forget Chu Wu, either, telling him how to conserve energy and which of his movements were unnecessary.
When Xiaojin entered the match again, he could feel the improvement immediately. It didn’t take long for him to be completely won over by Lu Fang’s instruction.
Seeing this, Chen Chuan took the opportunity during their next break to call Xiaojin over. "You’ll stay here today and learn from Mr. Lu. I’ll take you home in the evening. If there’s anything you don’t understand, you can ask me."
Xiaojin said okay, then added seriously, "Captain Chen, thank you."
Chen Chuan nodded, patted his shoulder, and left.
Lu Fang saw him out. "Don’t you worry. I’ll have No. 13 keep an eye on things here. If there are any problems, I’ll have her notify you immediately."
"I appreciate it," Chen Chuan said. "And please, charge the normal tuition fee. Don’t worry about anything else." At the door, he said, "I’ll be going now. I’ll come back to pick him up this evening."
After parting with Lu Fang, he walked out of the Fighting Hall. As he reached his car, he glanced across the street and saw someone watching.
This person made no effort to hide his presence. He had followed them the whole way and was likely responsible for protecting Xiaojin.
Just then, the man walked over and greeted him. "Hello, Captain Chen. Assistant Fang asked me to follow Xiaojin."
Chen Chuan immediately used his Realm Token to contact Fang Zhixin and quickly confirmed this.
Fang Zhixin asked, "Captain Chen, is Xiaojin coming back today?"
Chen Chuan replied, "I’ll bring him back in the evening. As for what he wants to learn, I think you’re well aware, Assistant Fang."
Fang Zhixin sighed. "I know. How about this: if Xiaojin likes it there, I’ll arrange for someone to take him to and from the hall every day. That way we won’t have to trouble you, Captain Chen."
"If Xiaojin is fine with that, it’s not a problem," Chen Chuan said. "But let’s leave it for today. I brought him out, so I’ll be the one to take him home."
Fang Zhixin agreed and said with genuine sincerity, "Thank you, Captain Chen."
Chen Chuan said, "Don’t mention it. Teacher Chen has also taught me a great deal."
He left and headed straight back to his residence in the Wuding District. He had learned a great deal today, including several methods for Emitting Force, as well as Spiritual Defense and the Observation Method. He needed time to consolidate his new knowledge.
After practicing until evening, he went out and took the still-ecstatic Xiaojin home.
Although it had only been an afternoon, he could see that the trip had made Xiaojin much more lively. He was no longer as gloomy as before.
When they returned, Chen Bitong was standing upstairs, looking down through a floor-to-ceiling window. Seeing Xiaojin’s slightly lighter steps, he watched in silence for a moment before turning and leaving.
The next day, Chen Chuan returned to the training program. As expected, Old Yan had been eliminated and replaced by someone else.
But it was clear that Chen Bitong’s lessons were not easy to learn. Over the next two days, after Ding Vein left, the other two were also eliminated one by one.
And so, of the initial group of five, only he remained after three days. Everyone else was gone.
However, even those who left had learned a lot, despite only studying under Chen Bitong for a day or two. It was enough knowledge to keep them busy for a long time. If they could fully absorb it, both their combat experience and personal strength would see a significant improvement.
It was no wonder so many people tried every trick in the book to get into this training program.
The four replacements who came in next were all quite skilled; they actually managed to keep up with Chen Bitong’s lessons for several days straight. However, these four seemed to be acquaintances. They stuck close together and subtly ostracized Chen Chuan, never interacting with him.
Chen Chuan had no interest in interacting with them either. He only found out later, when speaking with Counselor Pei, that they were all from the National Temporary Special Action Committee.
Their purpose for joining the training program was likely similar to his. They were nominally there to learn from Chen Bitong, but in reality, they had probably been ordered to monitor and investigate.
Counselor Pei’s final piece of advice was that this organization’s methods were extreme, so he should interact with them as little as possible. However, if they did anything out of line, he didn’t need to hold back.
Chen Chuan acknowledged this. The training sessions were one-on-one, so they rarely crossed paths, and so far, none of them had tried to provoke him.
Two days later, just as he stepped out of the elevator, he heard a loud voice ring out from the Training Ground. "It’s a complete waste for Teacher Chen to spend his time on people like you!
Isn’t it? Only the elite are worthy of receiving Teacher Chen’s guidance.
But you mediocrities are taking up the teacher’s time. That goes against his philosophy, and it robs the true elite of opportunities for his guidance."
Chen Chuan then heard a sarcastic retort, "Yu Lie, don’t tell me the ’elite’ you’re talking about is you?"
The owner of the first voice admitted it without the slightest embarrassment. "That’s right, it’s me." He then added in a matter-of-fact tone, "Who else could it be? You lot? Don’t make me laugh."
Chen Chuan reached the entrance to the Training Ground and saw a tall young man in an imported suit, with shoulder-length hair. He looked to be in his late twenties, with a strong jaw, high cheekbones, and sharp features. His expression was a mixture of untamable pride and flippancy.
At that moment, he had one hand in his pocket while idly flipping a coin with the other. "Do you think Teacher Chen will object to me doing this?" he asked mockingly.
"He won’t.
I’ve been with Teacher Chen for a long time. I know him. Only the true elite ever get his attention. If I beat you all and toss you out of here today, he won’t blame me. Why? Because as far as he’s concerned, I’m worth more than all of you put together."
He gave a wicked grin and cracked his neck and wrists. "You can all come at me at once. If I lose, I’ll walk out of here and never show my face to you again. If I see any of you on the street, I’ll give you a wide berth. So, what do you say? Can’t say I’m not giving you a chance."
The four men sneered. One-on-one, they admitted they were no match for this man. But for one person to take on all of them was just too arrogant.
Besides, Yu Lie had only stated the consequences of his own loss, not theirs. That meant even if they lost, they could still keep their positions here.
After briefly discussing tactics, one of them sneered, "Alright, then. Let’s fight."
