Chapter 458 - 188: Contingency Plan
On the way back, Chen Chuan suddenly found himself having more ideas about Fighting Skills.
Guiding Lu Fang and the other two had also helped him sort through his own knowledge.
Teacher Jiang had once said that theory, beyond just actual combat, was equally important. He was right. Theory not only shows you where you can go in the future, but it also helps you review and organize what you’ve learned.
’Thinking about it, maybe getting a teaching position in the future wouldn’t be so bad.’
He sped up a bit, passing under the kaleidoscopic light screens of the skyscrapers lining the road as he made his way back to Wuyi.
After getting back to his dorm, he first rinsed off. Then he took off his old Realm Token and put on the new one Specialist Liang had given him.
Upon activation, a screen projected before his eyes. Initially, it showed two intersecting, swaying curves, like ocean waves. Then, they split, one moving up and the other down. Yet, at the very ends of their extension, they seemed to reconnect, appearing both separate and joined.
Once the animation finished, an internal platform appeared. At the same time, a voice announced, "Detecting login from Second Level Executor Chen Chuan of the Processing Bureau. Mr. Chen, would you like to enter the Ring Screen Defense Platform?"
He said, "Enter."
Following his confirmation, his identity credentials flashed across the screen, after which the platform’s main interface appeared.
The platform showed a vast amount of information about the World Ring and related topics. The content was so extensive that a single glance revealed numerous points of interest.
However, as he browsed, he discovered that most sections required clearance to view.
There was also a dedicated discussion channel with a considerable number of users. Judging by their profiles, they all seemed to be Third Limit Fighters involved in the defense of the World Ring.
However, since he hadn’t participated in any defense missions yet, he lacked the "defender" certification. As a result, any content related to defense was marked "Insufficient Permissions."
Just then, he noticed a file marked "Received." This had to be the one Specialist Liang had sent.
He reached out and tapped it. A list of important notices and regulations for participating in the World Ring’s defense immediately appeared.
Below that was the basic information on Chen Bitong, the man Specialist Liang had told him to watch out for.
Chen Bitong had been stationed on the front lines of the Ring Screen since he was twenty—for more than two decades now. He had repeatedly refused promotions, mentored many younger fighters, and earned a high reputation among those at the Ring Screen.
The file also noted that he had a deep background and was likely a member of a certain faction.
A breach had recently appeared on the Ring Screen—a major incident. Although he was investigated, the department’s efforts to dig deeper were met with resistance. Not only did many defenders vouch for him, but someone in a high position also intervened, leading to his early release.
He also recalled Specialist Liang mentioning that Chen Bitong was on the verge of becoming a Fighting Master.
He felt like he’d heard the term "Fighting Master" somewhere before. He tried searching for it on the platform. This time, no clearance was required, and a result appeared immediately.
"Fighting Master: A title for a Fighter who has honed their physical body to its peak, solidified their convictions, and elevated their spirit, thereby mastering Overlimit Fighting Techniques."
However, the entry didn’t specify what these "Overlimit Fighting Techniques" actually were.
’Senior Brother Cao told me that the Third Limit is pretty much the absolute limit of human cultivation,’ Chen Chuan mused. ’So, I can assume that a Fighting Master is someone who has surpassed that limit.’
Chen Bitong was explicitly mentioned as someone about to become a Fighting Master. He could only imagine that a person like that, even while still a Third Limit Fighter, must have pushed their body and spirit to the absolute peak of that limit. He would be on a completely different level from anyone Chen Chuan had faced before.
He couldn’t help but wonder, ’If I could fight someone like that, wouldn’t it help me understand the path forward?’
’I’m sure there will be a chance.’
He took one last look at Chen Bitong’s photo before swiping it away. After quickly reviewing the necessary files, he logged out of the platform. Seeing it was getting late, he practiced his Breathing Technique for a while before going to bed.
His vacation lasted until mid-November. Since it was a period of continuous relaxation, more content from the Memory Potion was unlocked. Most of it, as usual, was related to fighting.
This aligned with some of his suspicions. A portion of these memories was likely left by his parents to help him learn Fighting Skill. They probably assumed he would receive it just as he was beginning his training. To be fair, if things had unfolded that way, the potion would have made his progress twice as effective.
But something must have gone wrong, as he only received it after he had already reached the Third Limit. If that was the case, then the truly important clues he was searching for would probably only surface later.
He wasn’t in a rush, though. Time was passing, and he was steadily growing stronger. He believed that whatever problems arose, he would be able to face them with greater composure when the time came.
「Two days later, on November seventeenth」
Chen Chuan received a message from Yan Yi.
"Mr. Chen, the day after tomorrow, Lord Meng will formally announce Miss Meng as the new head of the company. All members of the Meng Clan will be in attendance. The company is sending a security detail to assist, but you, Mr. Chen, will be primarily responsible for her safety."
Chen Chuan replied, "Understood. I’ll head over today."
In the Yinglu Villa, Sister Huan listened to a report from one of her subordinates.
"Sister Huan, according to the passive Consciousness Body simulation, our win rate stabilizes at over seventy percent with Jiang Huowang on the team. The few losses we saw were in simulations that factored in his personal unpredictability."
The team member said excitedly, "Sister Huan, with Jiang Huowang, as long as he cooperates, we can maintain a win rate of over ninety percent!"
Sister Huan, however, remained calm.
When a team member had first suggested bringing Jiang Huowang in, she had initially disagreed. While he was incredibly strong, he had serious character flaws. He was extremely self-centered and impulsive. Once his emotions flared, he would ignore all commands. Adding him to the team seemed more detrimental than beneficial.
However, the results of the previous simulation had changed her mind.
The simulation showed that even with Jiang Huowang on board, the outcome wouldn’t be any worse.
If Jiang Huowang performed well this time, it would be a bonus. If not, they would simply proceed with their own plan and act as if he wasn’t there.
She said, "Refine this plan and fill in the details."
Just then, an urgent voice came from her Realm Token. "Sister Huan, we have movement on the target. The day after tomorrow is the Fusion Boundary Company’s conference to announce its new successor. The target is definitely heading to White Bird District first, then he’ll escort Meng Shu to the company headquarters for the event.
"His route is clear, and we’ve run multiple simulations. Should we intercept him on his way to White Bird District?"
Sister Huan’s mind raced. ’Chen Chuan is alone, his route is confirmed, and we have a plan. This really seems like the perfect opportunity...’
But she didn’t make a hasty decision. After a moment’s thought, she asked, "What about striking the day after tomorrow, while he’s escorting Meng Shu to the company? I recall we had a contingency plan for that scenario, didn’t we?"
The subordinate sounded confused. "Yes, we did. But the difficulty would skyrocket. We might face more than one Third Limit Fighter, which would put us at a severe disadvantage. Plus, the Processing Bureau would likely intervene quickly..."
"No," Sister Huan analyzed calmly. "Our previous failed simulations all had one thing in common: he retreats the moment he senses a disadvantage. But if we attack while he’s escorting Meng Shu out of White Bird District, he can’t disengage. He has to protect the heir to the Fusion Boundary Company. That makes it a perfect opportunity."
"But with Jiang Huowang, we shouldn’t have to resort to that..."
Sister Huan said, "Jiang Huowang isn’t completely reliable. We have to be prepared to act without him. Besides, while the Fusion Boundary Company has its security forces, our team is composed entirely of Third Limit Fighters. In a real fight, we don’t need to worry about ordinary people. They can’t interfere with us.
"According to the plan, once we launch our assault, the target will realize he’s the primary focus. He’ll definitely try to draw our fire to protect the others. That’s our chance."
"But... our window of opportunity will be very short. The Processing Bureau personnel stationed nearby are sure to arrive quickly."
"If he doesn’t run, how long can he last against our combined attack?"
"Five to ten minutes, roughly."
"That’s enough," Sister Huan said. "Run a new simulation based on this scenario and finalize the details. And add a new directive to the plan: to ensure the safety of our people, the entire operation is limited to ten minutes. After ten minutes, we withdraw, whether the target has been eliminated or not."
"Yes."
After ending the call, Sister Huan thought for a moment before contacting someone else. After a short wait, a resentful voice came through. "I’m telling you, the higher-ups have been on my case. When the hell are you going to make your move? I’ve been stalling for you this whole time. If you hadn’t called me, I was about to call you."
Sister Huan said bluntly, "We’re making our move the day after tomorrow."
"The day after tomorrow?"
The voice on the other end perked up, then quickly realized, "...You’re planning to hit him on the road?"
Sister Huan said, "We’ve made thorough preparations, and we’ve even brought in Jiang Huowang to ensure success. I’ll be participating personally as well."
The voice on the other end grew serious. "If that’s the case, what do you need from me?"
Sister Huan replied, "If you can, just draw some of the Processing Bureau’s attention away. That’s all."
The voice on the other end seemed hesitant, but finally agreed. "I’ll do my best. But be careful about the route you choose. It’s best to avoid any areas with a stationed Processing Bureau security detail."
"You don’t need to remind me of that," Sister Huan said. "Also..." She walked to the side, gazing at a rotating Ferris Wheel in the distance. "...to guarantee our success, I need you to hire two more people for me on the platform."
