Chapter 2684 - 2702: Pay More Attention
"Because last time you asked me that strange question, I’ve been closely monitoring changes in this area. Just at 3 a.m. last night, I discovered..."
The other person said a long string of professional jargon over the phone, but James Black didn’t understand a word. After the person finished, James directly asked, "Based on the data you’ve found, what conclusion have you reached?"
The person on the other end was silent for a few seconds before speaking, "I have reason to suspect that locally, there might be an earthquake soon."
"Can you give a specific time?" James immediately thought of the nightmare Jane Sampson had last night.
"I can’t determine it for now; I need to keep observing." The person on the phone sounded more serious, "But looking at the data which is frequently fluctuating, I think it might happen in the next few days."
"Did you tell anyone else about this?" James asked.
"I’ve reported it to the leaders above, but no one believes me. Our geographic location isn’t in an earthquake-prone zone, it’s even quite distant. Normally, it’s only slightly affected when there’s an earthquake elsewhere; this kind of thing has never happened. I’ve submitted my data and shared my speculations, but everyone thinks either the data is wrong, or there’s a possibility of an earthquake elsewhere, with us just being affected as usual. No one believes my guess."
The person also sounded rather helpless, "Our monitoring department has always been merely a formality; in the entire department, there’s only one person in a nominal position. If you hadn’t suddenly asked me about this, even I might not have paid attention to the work of this department."
"Put your other tasks aside for now. Within 24 hours, put all your energy into this matter. If necessary, find a couple of helpers. It’s best to monitor new data continuously for 24 hours, and give me another report on your speculation at this time tomorrow."
James Black had to take this matter to heart because it was just too coincidental.
Last night, Jane Sampson suddenly had a nightmare, even dreaming of a calendar and time. Today, he received this phone call.
"Alright, I’ll do as you say." The person agreed without much hesitation, clearly sensing that James Black took this matter seriously and noticing that he might have taken their speculations to heart.
After hanging up the phone, James sat there pondering for a long time until Liam Woody came by again to have him sign a document, bringing James back to his senses.
"Chief, I’m planning to go home to spend time with my wife this weekend. Can you approve the weekend leave for me?" Liam Woody put the document in front of James and discussed it with him.
Back before he was married, Liam Woody, like James Black, rarely left the base more than twice a year.
If he needed to buy something, he’d just ask the teammates going out to help bring it back. He used to give his leave to other teammates.
James nodded, "Alright."
James directly approved the leave slip for Liam Woody.
After thinking for a moment, James asked Liam Woody, "Did your wife often dream when she was pregnant?"
"Yes, she had all kinds of strange dreams," Liam Woody nodded repeatedly. "You know, these things are just too mysterious. Before she even knew she was pregnant, one day she told me she dreamed of a snake coiling around her belly playing a game with her."
