Chapter 216 Are You Looking for Her?
Emilia’s POV
Fynn’s words landed hard. The car was heated and I was bundled up in my winter coat, but I couldn’t stop shaking.
It was so damn cold.
"How did he find out?" I asked, my voice barely steady.
"On his way to the office this morning, he spotted someone. A familiar figure. He went after them." Fynn’s eyes met mine in the rearview mirror. "He’s still out there looking right now."
My heart twisted, but I didn’t want to say anything more. What was there to say?
Fynn must have picked up on my mood, because he tried to sound reassuring. "Luna, don’t worry. No one can change how the Alpha feels about you."
"Not even Abigail?"
"I... I think so."
I let out a bitter laugh. "You think so? Wow, Fynn. That’s really comforting."
Even an idiot could tell he wasn’t sure. The doubt in his voice said everything.
The car pulled up outside the mansion. I climbed out in a daze while one of the guards grabbed my suitcase and held an umbrella over my head against the falling snow.
"Do you want to come in?" I asked Fynn.
"No, I’ve got some things to handle at the company."
He gave me a meaningful look before driving away, leaving me standing there in the cold.
Mila looked up in surprise when I walked through the door. "Didn’t you say you were going on a trip? Why are you back so soon?"
"It got postponed," I said, my voice flat.
"Postponed? Why?"
"Something came up for him. It wasn’t a good time."
Mila frowned. "What could possibly be so important that he had to cancel your trip? When he gets back, I’m going to have a serious talk with him."
I gave her a weak smile. "It’s fine, Mom. His work matters. We can take a trip anytime."
She patted my shoulder, looking relieved. "You’re always so understanding, dear."
Understanding. Right. That’s what everyone kept calling it.
That night, Sebastian came home late. I didn’t ask where he’d been. He didn’t offer an explanation either.
I pretended to be asleep when he finally slipped into bed. He didn’t try to wake me. Just showered, pressed a kiss to my forehead, and dropped down beside me with a heavy sigh before switching off the bedside lamp.
In the darkness, I heard him exhale deeply, like he was carrying the weight of the world.
The next morning, I got up early and laid out his clothes. Then I went to the gym and ran on the treadmill until my legs burned and my lungs screamed for air.
When I came back to the bedroom, Sebastian was just waking up. He looked at me with gentle eyes. "Did you go for a run?"
"Yeah."
I grabbed a towel and wiped the sweat from my face, then picked up his clothes and handed them to him. "Hurry up and wash up. Breakfast is almost ready."
As I turned to leave, he caught my arm. "Aren’t you going to ask me why I changed our plans?"
I glanced back at him. "You’ve got your reasons for everything you do. If you wanted to tell me, you would. If you don’t, there’s no point in me asking."
"Actually, I..."
He hesitated, like he wanted to confess something. Then his expression shifted. "Forget it. It’s nothing. I’ll take you to Hokkaido another time."
I shrugged and turned away, a small, bitter smile twisting my lips.
For the next few days, Sebastian came home late every single night. Finally, I couldn’t take it anymore.
I decided to confront him.
It was another freezing night. The snow had stopped, but the wind howled outside, rattling the branches against the windows even though they were shut tight.
When Sebastian walked through the door, he found me sitting on the sofa, the TV playing some mindless show I wasn’t really watching. He pulled off his black windbreaker and asked softly, "Why aren’t you asleep yet?"
"Why are you home so late?"
He went still. Maybe because it was the first time I’d actually asked about his late nights.
"I had something to take care of."
"What was it?"
He stiffened again, clearly not expecting me to push.
"Hey, what’s wrong?" He sat down next to me, his face puzzled.
"Nothing’s wrong. I just want to know why you’ve been coming home so late these past few nights."
"I told you, I had something to take care of."
"Are you looking for Abigail?"
Silence. Complete, suffocating silence.
When he finally spoke, his voice was careful. "How did you know?"
"No secret stays hidden forever, Sebastian. You found out everything I tried to keep from you. Did you really think I wouldn’t find out about this?"
"Yes," he said after a long pause. "I’m looking for her."
He didn’t even try to deny it.
"Why?" My voice cracked despite my best efforts to keep it steady. "Why do you need to find her? What are you going to do when you do?"
"I don’t want anything from her. I just need an answer. I need to know why she betrayed me."
My eyes burned. I blinked hard, trying to keep the tears back. "You canceled our trip. You didn’t care about me at all. You just wanted to find her. Do you know why I wanted to go to Hokkaido? Do you really think I can’t ski?"
He opened his mouth, but I kept going.
"I chose Hokkaido because of a story people tell up there. They say if two people who love each other see diamond dust snow before sunrise, they’ll be together forever. They’ll never be separated. I wanted to see that with you. Even if we had to wait day after day, even if it meant freezing half to death out there, I wanted to see it with my own eyes. With you."
The tears finally spilled over, hot against my cold cheeks. Sebastian pulled me into his arms, his voice rough. "You’re being silly. I’m already married to you. I won’t hide anything from you."
"So, are you going to tell me why she betrayed you?"
For the fourth time that night, I left Sebastian Simons completely speechless.
