Chapter 57 She Fooled Me
Sebastian’s POV
I hadn’t slept well. By five in the morning, I gave up trying to sleep and drove to the office.
The papers were on my desk, but I couldn’t focus on the words.
I felt Fynn trying to connect with my mind through our pack link.
I accepted it. "What is it?"
"Are you serious right now?" Fynn’s voice sounded amused in my head. "It’s five in the morning and you’re at the office looking at papers?"
"How do you know where I am?"
"Technology, Alpha. It’s amazing."
I didn’t want to play his games. "Don’t waste my time."
"I heard from Tiffany that you and our Luna had quite a night yesterday," Fynn continued with a teasing tone. "But here you are, hiding in your office so early. How strange..."
"Seriously, Fynn? You’re ignoring your work to talk about my private life? When did my Beta become such a gossip?"
"I’m just worried about my Alpha—"
"Worried?" I interrupted. "You know what worries me? My sister has nothing better to do than talk about my personal business with my Beta. Maybe I should arrange some meetings for Tiffany with Alphas from other packs. She’s old enough to get married now."
The silence that followed made me feel better.
"I’ll... I’ll bring you coffee and breakfast right away," Fynn said quickly, no longer teasing. "And the work files you asked for."
"That’s better."
I cut off the mental connection and went back to work, though my wolf Ryder was restless in my mind. He wanted to go home. To her.
I ignored him and focused on the contracts until the numbers finally made sense again.
By noon, I’d done more work than I usually did all day, but I couldn’t focus anymore. Emilia would be at work now, which meant the house would be empty.
The drive home was quick, but the quiet I hoped for was broken the moment I walked through the door.
"Sebastian!"
Linda appeared suddenly, grabbing my arm tightly. "You’re back! I’ve been waiting for you. Could you give me a ride to—"
"No." I tried to pull my arm away, but she held on tighter.
"Please? It’s not far, and I really need to—"
"I said no." My voice became cold—the tone I used in business meetings that made other Alphas change their minds.
It didn’t work on Linda Taylor at all.
"But Sebastian," she complained, trying to look attractive by batting her eyes. "Just one little ride? And maybe you could give me your phone number? I don’t know anyone here and—"
I was considering whether to throw her out of my pack territory when she suddenly said.
"My sister went to work. Shouldn’t you take care of me?"
I thought about my promise to Emilia to play the role of a caring husband. I said through gritted teeth, "If it’s on my way, I’ll drive you. Now, let go of me."
Linda reluctantly released my arm.
I walked to the living room, and she started chattering around me.
I sat on the couch.
Linda smiled nastily. "Do you know? Emilia didn’t even live in the pack until she was eight years old. Before that, she was just... living outside pack territory."
"Living outside?"
"Oh yes." Linda seemed happy to have my attention. "When Father finally brought her back to The Frostridge Pack, she was dirty. Wearing torn clothes, covered in mud. Honestly, I don’t know how she survived. Must have been living like a rogue."
I remembered that night, when I’d called Emilia a spoiled princess. The careful way she’d controlled herself before answering.
"Sebastian?" Linda called my name in a fake sweet voice.
I looked at her coldly and said, "We’re not that close."
"Sorry, Alpha Sebastian."
I just wanted to get rid of this woman as quickly as possible. I checked the time and figured it was about right. I signaled for her to follow me.
We walked outside together, and I immediately saw Emilia standing near the entrance. She must have just come back from work.
"Going somewhere?"
"I’m visiting a friend," Linda announced proudly. "Sebastian offered to drive me."
I didn’t correct her lie. I should have. But I didn’t.
When I was leaving, Emilia actually dared to kiss me.
My wolf almost purred at the touch.
"Don’t be out too late, dear," Emilia said. "I have a surprise waiting for you tonight."
My eyes went wide.
As I drove away with Linda talking beside me, all I could think about was that surprise.
What game was Emilia Taylor playing now?
After I dropped Linda off at her destination, Linda tried to drag me to join a party. I pushed Linda out of the car directly and drove home.
The traffic back to the pack house was hell. Every red light, every slow driver seemed determined to keep me from home.
