ÉTIENNE

The dream started in a way that good things almost never did for me.

With nothing held over me.

She was simply there, the way people were there in dreams — no entrance, no explanation, no moment where I had to decide whether to let her in. Margaux. Her dark hair loose, the way I had only seen it once, early morning through a half-open door I had not meant to look through. She was sitting at the edge of something, a bed or a ledge or the boundary between two rooms, and she was looking at me with an expression I did not have a category for. Not desire, exactly. Not pity. Something quieter and more patient than either.

I braced myself for the dread.

I waited for it the way I had learned to wait for it — that specific tightening in the chest, the sense of standing at the top of a staircase in the dark, knowing the next step would not be where I expected it. Intimacy had always announced itself to me that way. Not with excitement. With bracing.

But it never arrived.

She reached out and put her hand flat against my chest, just over my sternum, and left it there. The weight of it was so ordinary. A hand. Just a hand. But my body read it as something seismic, some recalibration happening in the space between one breath and the next. She wasn’t pressing. Wasn’t taking anything. The hand just rested, warm and present, and waited for me to decide what to do with it.

I placed my hand over hers.

That was the entire decision. That was all it took. The simplicity of it made something behind my eyes ache, a feeling I could not name or investigate.

"You’re doing it again."

"Doing what?"

"Trying to understand every second of this instead of being in it."

"That’s not a habit I can turn off."

Her mouth twitched. "You seem to be managing."

She said it without complaint. Like it was just a fact about me she had already accounted for.

I didn’t know if I was capable of that. I was certain that she could tell.

She tilted her head just a little. In the dream, that gesture was hers before an argument, and the small, specific familiarity of it struck me in a place I had not armored.

"You’ve already stopped," she said. "You just haven’t noticed yet."

She was right. The constant narration in my head, the assessment and cataloging and calculation of exits, had gone quiet without my noticing. There was just this room, just her hand under mine, and the warmth spreading outward from that point of contact like ink in water.

She leaned in, closing the space between us.

My first instinct was still the old one. The learned one. My shoulders started to draw up, into some ancient posture of pre-emptive accommodation, the body getting ready to make itself small, cooperative, and absent. I felt it happen, recognized it for what it was, and watched it — watched myself begin that old performance — and then it didn’t finish.

Because she stopped moving. She had felt the shift in me without me saying a word, and she stopped, and she waited.

"We don’t have to," she said.

"I know."

"Then why do you look like you’re steeling yourself?"

It wasn’t really a question. She had seen it. I looked away.

"Nothing."

She raised an eyebrow.

"Liar."

I let out a breath.

"Habit," I said.

The word sat between us, and she let it. She didn’t push, didn’t perform understanding, didn’t say anything that would require me to respond. The hand against my chest pressed slightly, not pulling me anywhere, just acknowledging that she could feel my heart working too fast through the skin.

Then, slowly, I turned to face her again.

She kissed me. Soft and unhurried, the kind of kiss that had no agenda embedded in it, and my hands found her face because I wanted them there. I wanted this. Not as performance, appeasement, or the path of least resistance through someone else’s will.

I wanted it.

Some part of me kept waiting for the moment everything soured. The anticipation of that moment was so ingrained that I felt it as a phantom — the ghost of dread, present in structure but empty of content. It never materialized. I kept waiting, and it kept not coming, and eventually I stopped waiting because the kiss was still happening, she was still in no hurry, and my hands were still where I had put them because I wanted them there.

She pulled back just enough to see my face.

"I see you are still here," she said. "I see you are still you."

I kissed her again. This time I moved first.

Her hands slid to my shoulders, my neck, the back of my head, and the touch was warm and grounding rather than restraining. I tracked each one consciously for a moment, some diagnostic habit I couldn’t fully turn off, but the assessment kept returning the same answer: safe. Safe. Safe. Until I stopped assessing and just felt her hands in my hair and the warmth of her body close to mine.

Her mouth opened under mine. A sound escaped her, low and wanting, and it reached something in me I had not known was reachable. Not because of what it signaled. Because it was honest. She wanted me, and she was not trying to manipulate me with the wanting.

I drew her nearer to me.

Her hands moved to the hem of my shirt, and she looked at me before she touched it. That look. That single, brief, checking look that asked without asking. I nodded, and she pulled the shirt over my head, and her palms settled flat against my chest, warm and still, and stayed there the way her hand had stayed before — waiting for me rather than taking from me.

I reached for her.

The fabric of her dress came away slowly, her helping me with it, both of us unhurried. There was no urgency that felt like a demand. When she was bare to the waist, I looked at her. I actually looked, and something in my chest did something complicated and structural that I didn’t have language for. She was watching me look at her with an expression that was open, a little vulnerable, not performing, and not curating herself for my reaction.

I leaned down and pressed my mouth to the curve of her breast, and she exhaled, long and slow, her fingers threading into my hair. Her skin was warm. I kissed across to her other breast, circling her nipple with my tongue, and felt her arch slightly beneath my hands. She made a sound that wasn’t words, something small and involuntary, and it loosened something in me.

She was real. She was responding to me. Not to a version of me that was useful, compliant, or strategically valuable. To me.

I let myself drift lower.

She settled back against the bed, and I kissed down her stomach, taking my time, and she let me take it. Her fingers stayed loose in my hair, no pressure, no direction. I worked her underwear down and off, and she shivered when the air hit her skin. I pressed a kiss to the inside of her thigh and felt the muscle tremble.

I looked up at her.

"You okay?"

Her fingers brushed through my hair.

"More worried about you."

Something in my chest tightened.

"I’m here."

"I know."

"No, I mean..."

I couldn’t finish it.

Her smile softened.

"I know what you mean."

I put my mouth on her.

The sound she made when I did that went straight through me. I worked slowly at first, learning the specific responses her body gave, the way her hips shifted when I changed the pressure, the way her breath caught when I found a particular angle and stayed with it. Her thighs closed around my head, and I felt her hand tighten in my hair, and I felt none of the old things. None of the dissociation or performance or low-grade absence that had always been my method of surviving this kind of proximity.

I felt present. Completely, acutely, almost unsettlingly present.

I slipped two fingers inside her, and her whole body arched, a sharp, involuntary curve that lifted her off the mattress. I felt her clench around my fingers and kept the rhythm steady, kept my mouth working, and she was saying something now — my name, pieces of words, nothing coherent — and all of it was so real, all of it was for me, and I let myself have that. I let myself exist in the specific reality of making her feel this.

Her thighs were shaking. Her hand in my hair pressed down, then released, then pressed again. Some part of me kept waiting for the moment I would recognize the familiar shape of obligation underneath the warmth, that old architecture where intimacy became transactional. It never appeared. There was just her body under my hands, and her sounds in the air above me and the warmth that had started in my chest expanding outward until I could feel it in my fingers.

She came with her hand flat over her own mouth, muffling it, and I felt her pulse around my fingers and held her through it until she went soft.

I came back up.

She pulled me down and kissed me and didn’t care about anything. The kiss was deep and slow and she tasted it back from my mouth without hesitation, and the intimacy of that, the casualness of it, the lack of theater, undid something else in my chest.

"Stay with me," she said against my mouth.
