SÉVERINE

I lay there for a long while afterward, saying nothing.

The room had gone quiet again. Beyond the walls, the hotel settled into the ordinary sounds of human life, distant plumbing, the muted hum of an elevator somewhere below, footsteps crossing a hallway before fading into silence. Beside me, Grigori’s breathing had slowed into an easy rhythm. One arm remained draped around my waist, his fingers idly combing through my hair with absent strokes, as though he had slipped into the habit without realizing it.

It should have irritated me.

Instead, I found it... strangely calming.

That realization bothered me more than the gesture itself.

I kept my eyes on the ceiling.

Then, inevitably, I thought about Étienne.

Not with the frantic, all-consuming desperation that had ruled me for years, nor with the feverish obsession that had driven every calculation I’d made since arriving at Valcourt. That hunger had quieted into something else, something far more difficult to categorize. It felt like pressing a finger against an old bruise after weeks of healing, expecting sharp pain and finding only a dull ache. The wound was still there. It simply no longer dictated every movement I made.

I still cared for him.

There was no point lying to myself. I still liked him, deeply, though perhaps not the man he had become. Rather, the version of him I had carried in my mind for so long, the patient, thoughtful Alpha I had convinced myself truly understood me, or eventually would. Whether that version had ever existed outside my imagination was becoming increasingly difficult to answer.

Which left me with a far more uncomfortable question.

If that was true...

Why had I just kissed Grigori?

More than kissed him.

Why had none of it felt like betrayal while it was happening?

I sat upright.

The movement disturbed him immediately.

His hand slipped from my hair as his attention sharpened with impossible speed, centuries of instinct overcoming whatever approximation of sleep he had entered. Those unnaturally blue eyes opened and settled on me, searching my face with quiet concern.

"What is wrong?" he asked.

"We were talking before..." I said, drawing the blanket around myself. "Before everything else happened."

"I never answered your question."

"No."

He exhaled softly, already sounding resigned.

"I told you it was not something you needed to concern yourself with tonight."

"Grigori." I turned fully to face him. "No more deciding what I should and shouldn’t know."

I held his gaze.

"What," I asked quietly, "is a primordial?"

He looked at me for a moment with the expression he wore when he was calculating whether refusal was genuinely available to him. It was a different calculation now than it would have been an hour ago, which I was aware of and he was aware of, and neither of us had yet fully mapped the implications.

"Primordials," he said at last, "are the oldest of my kind. They existed long before kingdoms, before languages settled into recognizable forms, before humanity learned to record its own history. They rule Gehenna."

He spoke the name with quiet familiarity rather than reverence.

"It is the Kingdom of Bones," he continued. "The mirror of Elysium. Where Elysium gathers the virtuous, Gehenna receives those whose souls have become irredeemably corrupt."

He looked away.

"For a very long time, that was enough."

His voice had taken on the distant cadence of someone recalling events so ancient they had become indistinguishable from myth.

"But eternity eventually becomes monotonous. Gehenna does not change. There are no new ideas. No discoveries. No genuine uncertainty." His eyes drifted back to mine. "The primordials grew... curious. They wanted experiences our realm could no longer provide."

"And they came here."

"They tried."

A faint smile crossed his face.

"They could not simply cross over. Realms reject what does not belong to them. They required an anchor."

"What kind of anchor?"

"True psychics."

The words left his mouth almost too quickly.

He froze.

His fingers rose to his lips, pressing lightly against them as though he could somehow force the sentence back inside himself. The movement looked completely involuntary.

I watched him in silence.

"I..." His brow furrowed. "I had no intention of telling you that."

"But you did."

"Yes."

He lowered his hand slowly, studying it with quiet disbelief.

"It felt..." He searched for the right word. "Painful not to."

Something clicked.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just enough for two completely unrelated memories to slide neatly together.

I cannot give you my name.

The dominion that would hand me over to you is not something I am prepared to offer.

Amine.

I looked back at Grigori.

"Tell me," I said quietly, "how witches are made."

"Why would I..."

The resistance lasted only a heartbeat.

His jaw tightened.

I watched something invisible win an argument inside him.

"...A primordial does not choose randomly," he said, his voice quieter now. "They spend years, sometimes decades, identifying the right person. They wait until grief, desperation, loneliness, or ambition has hollowed them out enough that refusal becomes nearly impossible."

He met my eyes.

"The offer always arrives at the worst moment of a person’s life."

"A bargain."

"Structurally similar to one made with a spirit." He nodded once. "Except the price is immeasurably greater."

"What does the primordial receive?"

"They require something that binds them here. Something capable of resisting the pull of Gehenna."

"And that is?"

"They take the shade."

He stopped speaking.

Not because he wanted to.

Because something else had finally caught his attention.

His expression shifted with startling clarity.

"I understand now."

I tilted my head.

"The heat of the moment..." His voice had become almost thoughtful. "I told you my true name."

"You did."

"You have dominion over me now."

He said it without bitterness.

"Not the limited authority granted to a witch over her familiar. Proper dominion."

I felt myself smile before I consciously chose to.

"That does sound rather pleasant," I said. "Being your actual mistress for once."
