Chapter 33—Dissonance.

The distant thrum of the first explosion was soft—so quiet that ninety percent of the audience in Arena Beta mistook it for the low, rhythmic beating of ceremonial war drums celebrating the opening of the second round.

Only Kaelen caught the microscopic tremble beneath the soles of his boots.

He stood in the center of the western prep ring, his eyes narrowed as his internal system overlay flickered subtle red warnings along the upper periphery of his vision.

CLING!

[ WARNING: REGIONAL MANA MATRIX INSTABILITY DETECTED—NORTHERN SECTOR (IRON-SPIRE DISTRICT) ]

[ WARD INTEGRITY: 74%... DECREASING]

"Did you feel that?" Lyra, whisper, came from his right. She was adjusting the silver leather straps of her armguards, her posture stiff and her hand hovering unnaturally close to her rapier hilt.

"That wasn’t acoustic reverberation from the arena barriers. That was a structural blast."

"The prison wards," Kaelen confirmed in a low voice, keeping his eyes fixed on the central arena floor where two mid-tier noble contestants were currently clashing in a flashy, useless display of pyrotechnics.

"Malakor is out. Or at the very least, the breached wall is already bleeding blood-mana into the northern aqueducts."

Tsubaki stepped up beside them, his dark eyes unreadable, his katana resting lightly against his hip.

" The Academy guard rotations haven’t moved. Look at the high balcony."

Kaelen raised his gaze toward the grand VIP pavilion.

Chancellor Sterling sits comfortably in his gilded throne, flanked by several senior archmages in ornate blue robes.

A captain of the royal guard was whispering urgently into the chancellor’s ear, presenting a glowing message scroll sealed with a grey wax.

Sterling merely waved his hand dismissively, offering a calm, reassuring smile to the surrounding noble families before taking another slow sip from his goblet.

"They’re suppressing the news,"Lyra said softly, her teeth gritted.

"They don’t want to panic about the high houses. If the capital’s premier academy cancels its tournament because of a prison riot, the royal family looks weak in front of the international guild delegates."

"Prudence born of pride," Kaelen murmured coldly.

"An arrogant noble’s favorite way to die. "

He turned his attention back to Tsubaki and pulled a heavy, metallic token from inside his inner jacket pocket.

The surface of the brass keycard was etched with dense, glowing security runes—the Vault Room B-4 Access Pass he had secured after his match against Garrett Vane.

"Tsubaki’," Kaelen said, slipping the pass into the shadow-bound sheath of the swordsman’s belt.

"The second round matches will draw the remaining spectators’ focus for the next forty minutes. The guards at the lower vault archives will be at half capacity."

Tsubaki caught the token without looking.

" You want me to move on B-4 now?"

"Not to steal the artifact," Kaelen replied.

"The Red-Eyed Player knows the Vault’s layout, but he expects us to react to Malakor’s breakout in the northern district. I want you to plant a spatial resonance marker right outside the vault threshold. If anyone tries to crack the seal before I finish my match, I need to know the exact second the outer ward collapses."

Tsubaki gave a single, firm nod. Without another word, he melted backward into the deep shadows cast by the vaulted stone arches of the corridor, his presence vanishing like smoke in the wind.

" And what about us?" Lyra asked, her golden eyes burning with quiet intensity.

"My match is scheduled for four slots after yours. If the northern walk completely collapses, the blood-mana bleed will reach the inner city before nightfall."

"Your match won’t matter if we don’t handle what’s coming into this ring next," Kaelen said, looking toward the eastern entrance archway.

"Look who just stepped into the marshal’s box."

Walking down the polished marble steps of the eastern gate was a figure clad In dark crimson-and-gold chainmail.

Vance Family Enforcement Specialist—Level 21 (B-rank)

Name: Valerius Vance

It wasn’t Julian Vance himself, but his older cousin—a lethal, calculating spell swordsman who had spent the last two years serving in the Royal Border Patrol before returning to the Academy to finalize his senior rank.

Valerius Vance moved with a fluid, predatory grace that Garrett Vane’s heavy armor could never match.

In his right hand, he held a thin, dark steel estoc that hummed with a harsh, crackling lightning enchantment.

Behind him in the VIP box, Julian Vance leaned over the stone railing, a dark, triumphant smile above the arena floor.

"They moved Valerius into your path for a match nine. Julian paid off the bracket marshal."

"It doesn’t matter who they put in front of me," Kaelen said smoothly, rolling his shoulders as he stepped onto the sand of the central arena floor.

" The faster I end this, the faster we move on vault B-4."

The arena announcer’s voice boomed through the amplified sound runes surrounding the amphitheater.

"MATCH NINE OF THE SECOND ROUND! ON THE EASTERN FLANK... REPRESENTING THE ILLUSTRIOUS HOUSE OF VANCE, THE LIGHTNING BLADE, VALERIUS VANCE!"

A roaring cheer erupted from the noble sections, a loud wall of noise meant to drown out the previous humiliation Garrett Vane had suffered.

" AND ON THE WESTERN FLANK... THE COMMONER CHAMPION WHO DEFEATED THE SUNLESS PEAK IN UNDER TWO MINUTES...KAELEN!"

The crowd’s response was split—a mixture of eager whispers from commoner spectators and cold, hostile glares from the upper-tier balconies.

Valerius stopped ten paces away from Kaelen, his slender estoc resting casually at his side. His light blue eyes were cold, devoid of the wild arrogance that characterized Julian.

"Garrett was a fool who relied too much on heavy iron," Valerius spoke, his voice quiet, sharp, and cut with lethal precision.

"He thought his shield made him invisible. He didn’t understand that true martial mastery lies in speed—speed that your spatial tricks cannot intercept."

Kaelen didn’t draw a blade. He stood with his hands loosely at his sides, his dark eyes fixed on the faint, rhythmic pulse of lightning mana gathering around Valerius’s feet.

"Your lightning channels are drawing thirty percent more mana than normal," Kaelen observed calmly. "You’re trying to end this in a single strike to restore your family’s pride."

Valerius’s eyes narrowed slightly.

"Observation won’t save you when your nerves are burned to ash."

"MATCH... BEGIN!" the referee roared, dropping his ceremonial flag.

BOOM!

Valerius didn’t just step forward—he exploded into a blinding streak of blue lightning.

The sand beneath his boots turned to molten glass instantly from the extreme heat discharge. In less than a fraction of a second, the tip of his lightning-infused estoc was less than three inches from Kaelen’s throat, moving at a speed that bypassed normal human reaction time.

In the VIP box, Julian raised a fist in victory.

"Die, rat!"

CRACK!

The sound of shattering glass echoed through the arena—not from the estoc piercing Kaelen’s flesh, but from the spatial layer between them.

Kaelen hadn’t tried to dodge. He hadn’t raised a shield.

Instead, he had activated [EVENT HORIZON: SPATIAL FOLD] in a miniature, paper-thin plane directly in front of his collarbone.

The tip of Valerius’s lethal lightning blade entered the microscopic void rift and vanished—reemerging instantly from a secondary rift six inches to the left, piercing nothing but empty air.

Valerius’s eyes widened in sheer shock as the kinetic momentum of his own high-speed thrust carried him forward, his guard wide open.

"Speed is useless," Kaelen whispered close to Valerius’s ear, his voice icy and devoid of emotion, "if you don’t control the space you’re running into."

Kaelen brought his palm up, driven by a surging vortex of black Void mana.

BANG!

The palm strike hit Valerius directly in the sternum. The compressed spatial force didn’t just push him back—it inverted the flow of lightning mana inside Valerius’s own meridians, causing his armor’s internal circuitry to detonate in a shower of blue sparks.

Valerius flew backward across fifty feet of arena sand, tumbling violently before skidding to a halt near the edge of the stone ring. His estoc clattered away, completely scorched, while his body twitched as his own disrupted lightning coursed back through his muscles.

Silence blanketed Arena Beta once again.

Julian Vance stood frozen in his box, his mouth open, his hands trembling against the marble railing.

Two matches. Two upper-tier noble champions. Defeated in a combined total of less than three minutes.

[MATCH CONCLUDED: VICTORY REGISTERED]

[OPPONENT: VALERIUS VANCE (LEVEL 21—B-RANK)]

[EXPERIENCE GAINED: +6,200 EXP]

[CURRENT EXP: 18,400 / 22,000]

Kaelen didn’t wait for the referee to formally declare his name. He turned on his heel and walked toward the western corridor, his mind already shifting away from the trivial tournament.

As he crossed beneath the dark archway, a sharp mental ping echoed in his mind—the spatial marker Tsubaki had planted down in the lower archives.

PING.

[ALERT: VAULT ROOM B-4 EXTERNAL WARD BREACHED]

[INTRUDER SIGNATURE: UNKNOWN (HIGH-DENSITY BLOOD/VOID HYBRID MANA)]

Kaelen’s eyes flared with dark violet light.

The tournament was no longer just a distraction. The heist had officially begun.

Everything is tight against Kaelen; will he be able to survive?
