Chapter 15— The Echos of the Void.
Chapter 15 — The Echoes of the Void.
The smell of medicinal herbs and dried blood hung heavy in the infirmary.
Kaelen lay on the narrow wooden cot, his eyes half-closed, keeping his breathing slow and ragged. On his right flank, the bandage was already soaked in crimson, but beneath the skin, his flesh was knitting back together at unnatural speed.

Lyra was sitting on a stool beside him, her knuckles white as she gripped the edge of the bed. Her wind mana flickered around her fingers, unstable with concern.
"You’re insane, Kaelen," she whispered, her voice tight. "You let his steel go straight through you. If he had angled his blade two inches higher..."
"I’m alive, Lyra," Kaelen muttered, turning his head slightly, feigning absolute exhaustion. "That’s all that matters for a commoner like me."
She bit her lip, unable to counter. Outside, in the courtyard, Tsubaki had been led away in total silence. To the rest of the Academy, he was the untouchable prodigy who had brutally crushed a peasant.
But Kaelen knew the truth. In those last seconds, when his hand tore the energy from his chest, Tsubaki’s silver eyes had filled with something he had never felt before: sheer, unadulterated horror.
A sudden, sharp sting erupted behind Kaelen’s retinas.
BZZZT
The blue interface of the System flickered a violent purple, casting a ghost light over his face that only he could see.

[ Memory Log Unlocked: Fragment #01 ]
A surge of icy memory flooded Kaelen’s consciousness—not his own, but the lingering consciousness imprinted inside the stolen artifact.
He saw a massive chamber of dark obsidian. Floating in the center was a giant, burning eye of violet mana, surrounded by figures clad in golden imperial armor. High officials. Royal archivists.
"The spatial links have been distributed to the regional heirs," a deep, booming voice echoed in the vision.
"Every breath, every spell, every drop of blood spilled by the noble prodigies will feed the Divine Engine. They believe these artifacts are gifts of ancestral protection... Fools."
The vision snapped back to reality. Cold sweat broke out across Kaelen’s forehead.
The pendant wasn’t an ancestral heirloom. It was a parasitic leech, an imperial surveillance tether monitoring the talents of the high nobility. And by completely absorbing its core, Kaelen hadn’t just drained Tsubaki he had severed the Imperial Court’s direct feed to the Academy.

[ Time Until Imperial Signal Triangulation: Unknown. ]
Dammit.Kaelen clenched his jaw, hiding his hands under the thin blanket. The System’s absorption was absolute, but breaking an imperial signal meant the capital would notice within hours. They wouldn’t know who did it, but they would send hounds to search the courtyard.
SWOOSH
A sudden pressure slammed into the infirmary walls. The heavy oak door burst inward with a muted CRACK, wood splinters showering the stone floor.
Lyra jumped up, her hand reaching instinctively for the dagger at her waist.
"Who’s there?!"
A tall figure stepped through the ruined doorway, bathed in the moonlight filtering through the corridor.
Tsubaki Iwanome.
His silver sword was sheathed, but his face was deathly pale, his eyes hollowed out by hysteria. Standing right behind him was a taller student wearing the black and gold coat of the Senior Elite class Rylan, the Rank 2 dual-elementalist. Rylan’s hands were already glowing with a dark, suffocating spatial barrier, sealing the entire room from the outside.
"Leave, girl," Rylan said, his voice flat, devoid of emotion. "This commoner possesses something that belongs to House Iwanome. This is a house matter."
"He’s severely wounded," Lyra snapped, stepping between them and Kaelen’s cot, wind swirling violently around her feet. "The fight was officially declared over by the Head Instructor."
"I said... LEAVE!" Tsubaki roared, his usual cold composure completely shattered. He looked like a madman stripped of his crown.
With a flick of his wrist, Rylan released a pulse of spatial pressure.
The air compressed around Lyra, trapping her limbs in invisible vise grips and throwing her backward onto an adjacent cot. She struggled, but the Rank gap was too wide; she couldn’t break the seal.
Tsubaki strode toward Kaelen, his boots clicking heavily against the stone floor. He pulled a concealed, jagged dagger from his belt and slammed the blade into the wooden frame inches from Kaelen’s head.
"Where is it?" Tsubaki hissed, leaning down until Kaelen could smell the copper scent of blood on his breath. "What did you do to my mana core, rat? The stone is dead. My divine aura is gone."
Kaelen slowly sat up, letting the blanket slide down his shoulders. He didn’t tremble. He didn’t feign terror. The cowardly mask melted away, leaving only the pitch-black void of his true gaze.
Tsubaki recoiled slightly, his hand freezing on the dagger’s hilt.
"Keep your voice down, prodigy," Kaelen murmured, his voice dropping to an icy whisper that barely carried across the room. "Unless you want Rylan behind you to realize what actually happened."
"What are you talking about?!" Tsubaki spat, though a flicker of doubt crossed his face.
Kaelen tilted his head, looking past Tsubaki’s shoulder at Rylan, who was maintaining the barrier near the door.
"You brought a Senior Elite to intimidate a commoner," Kaelen whispered, a dark, mocking smile curling his lips.
"Because if you told the Academy Council that a talentless rat drained your ancestral relic with his bare hands, your house would disown you by morning. Your rank, your title, your divine lineage... destroyed in five seconds."
Tsubaki’s pupils dilated. "You..."
"And there’s something else you don’t know, Tsubaki," Kaelen continued, leaning closer, his black eyes locking onto Tsubaki’s trembling silver ones. "That pendant wasn’t a blessing from your ancestors. It was an imperial leash. And now that I’ve broken it, the capital’s Enforcers are on their way here. If they find out why the link died..."
Kaelen paused, letting the silence heavy with threat hang in the air.
"They won’t just execute me. They’ll execute the noble who lost control of the tether."
Tsubaki stepped back, his chest heaving as if he couldn’t get enough air. "You’re a monster."

[ Analysis: Rylan’s spatial seal is narrowing... Target is not sealing the room to protect Tsubaki Iwanome. ]
[ Target’s True Objective: Elimination of all witnesses in the room. ]
Kaelen’s eyes narrowed. In the reflection of Tsubaki’s pale blade, he saw Rylan’s hand silently sliding toward the hilt of a dark, curved poison blade behind his back.
He wasn’t here as Tsubaki’s bodyguard. He was the assassin sent to clean up the broken link.
Kaelen locked eyes with Tsubaki, his hand quietly slipping down toward the broken chain tucked near his ankle.
"Tsubaki," Kaelen whispered coldly. "If you want to survive the next few seconds, don’t look back. Draw your sword."
SWOOSH
The air in the infirmary compressed violently, threatening to crush under the sheer spatial pressure.
Tsubaki didn’t even have time to turn around. His warrior instinct, honed by years of relentless training, forced him to react. His silver blade hissed out of its scabbard in a sharp flash of steel.
CLANG
Rylan’s poisoned dagger slammed against Tsubaki’s steel inches from his throat. Sparks showered into the dimness of the room.
"Rylan... You traitor," Tsubaki spat, his face contorted in utter shock. "You work for my father!"
"Your father is merely a pawn, Tsubaki," Rylan replied, his voice completely devoid of emotion. "And a pawn that loses his imperial artifact must be erased. Capital orders."
SWOOSH
With a fluid flick of his wrist, Rylan spun his second dagger. A sharp blade of compressed void slashed through the air, aimed straight at Tsubaki’s heart.

Not yet. Kaelen needed to hold onto his trump card.
"Duck!" Kaelen yelled at Tsubaki.
Tsubaki dropped to the floor at the exact instant the arc of spatial mana pulverized the stone wall behind him with a deafening CRACK, sending rock splinters flying through the air.
Without losing a fraction of a second, Kaelen vaulted out of the narrow cot. The wound on his right flank burned like a hot iron, but his body held together.
A hail of black spatial projectiles needle-thin shards of compressed darkness rained down upon the room.
Rylan was trying to annihilate everything, including Lyra, who was still pinned against the adjacent bed by the spatial seal.
"Kaelen!" Lyra cried out, fighting desperately against the invisible pressure locking her limbs.
"Don’t move!" Kaelen barked.
He slid across the cold stone floor, snatched the jagged dagger Tsubaki had planted into his bed frame moments earlier, and channeled a fraction of the stolen energy straight into the steel.

WHOOSH!
Kaelen hurled the dagger with everything he had toward the doorway. The System-enhanced blade wasn’t aiming at Rylan; it was targeted directly at the magical nexus maintaining the spatial barrier.
KABOOM!
