Chapter 31— The Unbreakable Shield.

The ambient light inside Training Room 4 was dim, broken only by the flickering purple luminescence hovering above Kaelen’s open palm.

"His record is clean," Lyra said, flicking through a set of glowing tactical archives pulled from the Academy’s public network. A holographic profile of a heavily armored student project is over the stone floor.

"Twenty-two official duels. Zero losses by ring-out. Zero losses by shield break. Garrett Vane’s primary artifact is the Aegis of the Sunless Peak—a tower shield forged from high-density mithril and layered with kinetic-redirection runes."

Tsubaki, leaning against the wall, his eyes half-closed, added with quiet gravity,

"It is not just a defensive weapon. The moment a physical or magical force strikes the face of that shield, the runes convert seventy percent of the impact into internal kinetic potential. He holds it, stores it, and releases it as an omnidirectional shockwave when you step into his range."

Kaelen didn’t take his eyes off the violet thread spinning between his fingertips.

His upgraded perception stat—sitting at a formidable 48 points—allowed him to trace the minute movements of his mana at a molecular level.

Before his stat reset and meridian reconstruction, controlling a thread of Void mana this thin would have caused severe feedback in his pathways.

Now, the energy flowed like cold silk.

"So hitting him harder only fuels his counterattack," Kaelen murmured softly.

"If I throw a heavy burst of Void Magic at the shield, I’m just charging his battery."

"Precisely," Lyra nodded, her eyebrows drawn in concern.

"Standard mages try to out-burn his absorption limit, but Garrett’s mana pool is backed by his noble house’s defensive techniques.

You can’t overpower him with brute force in a standard ring match, Kaelen.

Not without exposing your Void Core to the entire faculty watching from the high balconies."

Kaelen closed his hand. The violet thread collapsed inward with a silent, sharp pop, vanishing into nothingness.

"Then I won’t try to break the Shield," Kaelen said, his voice flat and deliberate.

"A shield is only as good as the anchor holding it. Title effect: [VOID ARCHITECT]. Doesn’t just increase compression—it allows structural bypass. If the front is impenetrable, the force doesn’t need to hit the front."

Over the next forty-eight hours, while the rest of the Academy’s combat divisions made loud, public displays of their preparations in the main courtyards, Kaelen remained sealed within the lower training block.

He pushed his reconstructed channels, to their absolute limits, testing the latency between his Void Step and his newly refined spatial compression.

He didn’t need a bigger spell. He needed absolute precision.

Three days later. Arena Beta.

The noise inside the subterranean amphitheater was deafening.

Thousands of students, senior faculty members, and guest talent scouts from regional guilds packed the tiered stone seating, their cheers echoing off the reinforced granite walls.

Banner pennants representing the elite noble house fluttered under the harsh light of floating luminescent crystals suspended high above the center ring.

"LADIES AND GENTLEMEN OF THE ACADEMY!" the announcer’s voice boomed through the amplification arrays, drawing an explosion of roars from the crowd."

"WE WELCOME YOU TO MATCH FOUR OF THE OPENING ROUND! ON THE EAST PLATFORM, REPRESENTING THE THIRD-YEAR NOBLE CONSERVATIVE DIVISION... THE IMPENETRABLE BARRICADE, GARRETT VANE"

The iron gate on the east side of the arena ground open with a heavy metallic screech.

A massive, broad-shouldered young man stepped into the sunlight. He was clad from neck to ankle in polished silver plate armor, but what drew every eye was the colossal six-foot-tall tower shield resting on his left forearm.

The metal was dark grey, etched with glowing azure runes that hummed with latent magic.

He slammed the base of the shield against the reinforced stone ring floor, sending a resounding THOOM across the arena.

The crowd went wild and chanted his name in unison.

"AND ON THE WEST PLATFORM..."

The announcer’s tone noticeably lost a fraction of its enthusiasm.

"...THE RECENT RECIPIENT OF THE CROWN’S SILVER GUARDIAN MEDAL, THE E-RANK CANDIDATE... KAELEN!"

The west gate creaked open.

Kaelen walked out slowly into the harsh glare of the arena. He wore his simple black Academy combat tunic, unadorned except for the silver star-shaped medal pinned neatly over his chest.

He carried no visible broadsword, no staff, and no heavy armor.

His posture was relaxed, his hands hanging loosely at his sides as his dark eyes swept across the hostile crowd.

Hisses and scattered jeers drifted down from the upper noble tiers.

"Look at him... walking in without a single piece of defensive gear!"

"He thinks receiving a medal makes him immortal!"

"Garrett is going to crush him against the stones!"

In the high spectator box, Captain Vane sat with his arms crossed, his weathered face impassive as he observed his nephew on the ring below.

A few seats away, Julian Vance leaned back with a cruel, expectant smirk, waiting for the slaughter to begin.

In the lower competitor stall, Lyra and Tsubaki stood by the railing, watching in silence.

"He’s calm," Lyra whispered, her knuckles whitening as she gripped the wood.

"He is calculating," Tsubaki corrected softly.

"Look at his feet. He has already measured the ring’s grid."

In the Sands Info Arena, Garrett Vane raised his heavy visor, exposing a broad, arrogant face featuring a sneering mouth.

He looked down at Kaelen with clear disdain.

"I didn’t know what political game you played to get that medal, E-RANK," Garrett shouted over the roar of the crowd, his voice amplified by his helmet’s runes.

"But here, titles mean nothing. You’re facing the Vane line. My shield has stopped A-Rank beasts. Your title trick magic won’t even leave a scratch on my plate."

Kaelen didn’t answer. He simply stopped ten paces away from the giant, taking a slight side stance. His right foot slid back an inch into the grit.

CLING!

[ SYSTEM NOTICE: ARENA DAMPENING FIELD ACTIVE ]

[ MATCH RULES: VICTORY BY KNOCKOUT, SUBMISSION, OR RING-OUT ]

[ COMBAT LOG INITIALIZED... ]

High above, a massive brass gong struck.

GONGGG

"MATCH... BEGIN!"

Instantly, Garrett Vane stomped his right foot forward.

BOOM!

A thick wave of yellow mana surged from his boots, locking his legs directly into the bedrock below. The runes across his tower shield flared with a blinding azure light as he lowered his center of gravity behind a solid, immovable fortress of mithril.

"Come on, stray!" Garrett roared from behind his steel wall.

"Hit me! Show the Academy what a ’silver Guardian’ can do!"

Kaelen didn’t hesitate. He raised his right hand, snapping his fingers.

FWIP!

A dense bolt of dark purple energy—a standard Void Bolt—shot through the air, streaking directly toward Garrett’s chest.

The bolt struck the center of the Aegis of the Sunless Peak dead on.

BANG!

The expected explosion of dark magic didn’t happen. Instead, the moment the purple bolt made contact with the gray mithril, the azure runes on the shield flashed bright violet.

The Void Bolt was instantly swallowed, dissolved, and drawn directly into the shield’s internal matrix.

CLING!

[WARNING: TARGET HAS ABSORBED KINETIC/MAGICAL IMPACT ]

[ TARGET STORED POTENTIAL: 15%]

"Haha! Is that all?!" Garrett laughed, his voice echoing from behind the iron.

"Weak! Utterly weak!"

Garrett slammed his right palm against the back of his shield.

KINETIC DISCHARGE

The stored energy within the shield was unleashed instantly in a violent, horizontal shockwave of compressed air and blue force. The shockwave tore up the stone surface of the ring, blasting outward in a thirty-foot cone directly toward Kaelen.

The crowd cheered, expecting to see the unarmored student swept off his feet and slammed into the stone boundary wall.

WHOOSH!

Kaelen didn’t even raise a barrier. The moment the shockwave was triggered, his form blurred.

[SKILL: VOID STEP (LVL 3) ACTIVATED]

A faint ripple distorted the air where Kaelen had been standing a fraction of a second prior.

The shockwave smashed harmlessly through space, obliterating the stone floor and sending clouds of dust into the air.

Kaelen materialized five meters to Garrett’s left, his breathing completely steady, his eyes cold and analytical.

[SYSTEM UPDATE: PERCEPTION ANALYZING REACTION DELAY]

[TARGET DISCHARGE LATENCY: 0.42 SECONDS]

[TARGET ANCHOR RECOVERY: 0.65 SECONDS]

There it is, Kaelen thought, his mind processing the stream of red numbers scrolling through his vision.

When Garrett discharged the stored energy, the lock on his boots momentarily disengaged to prevent the feedback from snapping his ankles.

For less than half a second, the ’Unbreakable Shield’ was just a boy carrying two hundred pounds of dead metal on a loose footing.

"Fast on your feet, aren’t you?!" Garrett barked, pivoting his massive frame toward Kaelen’s new position with a heavy, metallic clatter. He readjusted his stance, setting his shield once again.

"It doesn’t matter how many times you dodge! You can’t hurt me, and eventually, you’ll run out of mana."

"You’re right," Kaelen said smoothly,

stepping forward into Garrett’s threat zone rather than backing away.

"I can’t break your shield."

Garrett blinked under his visor, caught off guard by the admission.

"What?"

"So I won’t," Kaelen added.

Kaelen lowered his right hand, extending two fingers directly toward the ground beneath Garrett’s feet.

[TITLE EFFECT: VOID ARCHITECT—STRUCTURAL BYPASS]

[SKILL: EVENT HORIZON (LVL 1)—COMPRESSED]

Instead of launching a spell at the massive tower shield, Kaelen focused his mana through the stone beneath the ring’s surface. A concentrated thread of Void mana bypassed the shield entirely, burrowing directly under Garrett’s anchored steel boots.

Garrett felt a sudden, terrifying drop in the pit of his stomach.

The solid stone ring beneath his feet didn’t shatter—it simply vanished, converted instantly into fine, weightless dust by the local gravitational distortion of the Void thread.

"What the—?!" Garrett gasped as his heavy armor pulled him downward.

His right leg sank six inches into the collapsed stone floor, throwing his balance completely off center.

The massive tower shield tilted wildly to the left as Garrett stumbled, exposing his right shoulder and helmet.

"The shield is invulnerable," Kaelen’s cold voice echoed right beside Garrett’s ear.

Garrett’s eyes widened in sheer panic behind his visor. He hadn’t even seen Kaelen move.

Using the split second of disorientation, Kaelen had executed a micro-burst of Void Step, crossing the distance instantly to stand inside Garrett’s guard—well past the reach of the mithril shield.

"But you aren’t," Kaelen finished softly.

Kaelen’s hand snapped forward, his fingers coated in a concentrated, high-frequency aura of dark purple mana, pointing directly at the exposed, unarmored joint beneath Garrett’s right armpit...
