Demon Slayer: Breath of Desire

Chapter 143: Arrogance and Serenity

"Hehe... I didn’t see this coming..." Daki gazed at him with glassy, misted eyes, and dragged her tongue over her lips with a clumsy slowness, almost drunk. "That my master would have such delicious blood~"

In that moment she seemed to have completely forgotten what she’d come for. The mission, Muzan, the plan—all of it had dissolved into that pink mist.

All that remained was the heat, the aroma, and the man holding her.

That contrast—the voice laced with suggestion and, at the same time, those big, lost eyes, strangely innocent—was too much. Marcus couldn’t resist lowering his head and claiming her mouth again.

"M-Mmm~!"

A stifled moan escaped her, and Daki’s body went even softer in his arms, melting against him without the slightest resistance.

But Marcus didn’t give her the chance to keep babbling.

From who knows where, he produced a scrap of spotlessly white fabric and stuffed it into her mouth in a single motion.

Upon recognizing that so... familiar object, Daki’s eyes went wide, and a shiver shot through her lower belly all at once.

’He... when did he take them off me?’

"So you don’t get carried away by the urge to bite me," Marcus said, a trace of amusement in his voice, "first I’m going to block your ’lethal weapon.’"

"..."

With her own intimate garment gagging her mouth, Daki couldn’t say a word.

All she could do was look at him with those teary eyes, laden with reproach... and with something far more ardent.

"Mmmm~!"

The very next instant, Marcus scooped her up into his arms as if she weighed nothing and moved toward the bed.

Moonlight streamed through the window, lighting up the wide mattress.

Daki looked at the bed, her heart pounding so fast she felt it was going to explode.

She wanted to say something, but with the panties in her mouth, she could only let out a few faint whimpers.

Marcus looked down at her with a smile.

"Don’t be in such a hurry."

He laid her down on the bed and leaned over her, pressing her down with his body.

"The night is only just beginning."

...

This night was destined to be an evening without rest.

Marcus never imagined that the endurance of an Upper Moon could be so... stubborn. Or rather, precisely because she was an Upper Moon, she was able to withstand so much.

Daki, for her part, never imagined that this man, who seemed so refined and even delicate of feature, could transform into such a beast without the faintest trace of humanity.

His peculiar way of breathing, the heat of his body—everything about him goaded her desires without respite.

The aroma of that exotic blood kept her hungry. His breath left her with an insatiable thirst. Trapped between those two endless cravings, yanked from one extreme to the other, she lost her grip on reality more times than she could count.

And as if that weren’t enough...

This deranged man used not only breathing techniques, but Blood Demon Arts as well!

Arrows... Divine Speed...

He was a beast! An utter beast!

He didn’t care in the slightest whether she could take it or not!

She had no choice but to... endure the surge, wave after wave, given over to a kind of pleasure she had never known, a pleasure that dragged her again and again to the very brink of madness.

Under the moonlight, the two silhouettes stayed entwined.

No one could say how much time passed.

In the end, Daki simply couldn’t take any more. Her eyes rolled back and she passed out completely, limp among the sheets.

Marcus, breathing raggedly, rolled to one side and let himself drop down beside her.

He lay there staring at the ceiling with a satisfied smile.

As he read the system’s notifications, Marcus’s smile widened.

This had to be, by far, the fastest, easiest, and most unrestrained way he’d ever obtained a level four reward. Going from one to a hundred percent had taken him... a couple of hours?

At that thought, he turned his head to gaze at the woman sleeping soundly beside him.

Her face still held a trace of flush, and her breathing was steady. Her long white hair spilled across the pillow, framing her face and making it look even more delicate. Her lips were parted just slightly, as if she were murmuring something in her sleep.

Reaching out, Marcus stroked her head and tucked her in carefully.

"Good night."

With that whisper, he closed his eyes.

And right after his breathing turned completely steady... the demon beside him slowly opened her eyes.

Every inch of her body ached and she felt utterly weak...

She looked herself over for a moment, not a single garment on her and her skin scattered with marks.

Then she turned her gaze back to Marcus, who was sleeping like a log, that satisfied smile still plastered on his face.

A faint smile began to form on Daki’s lips.

’Men are always like this. No matter how wild he got, in the end didn’t he wind up completely under my control?’

’Stroking my head. Tucking me in. Wishing me good night...’

’Fufufu~ He’s already eating out of the palm of my hand.’

Was she a fool?

Since childhood she’d known how to use her beauty to get whatever she wanted, and for that reason alone no one could call her a fool.

And yet...

She trusted too much in her own allure.

Four hundred years of existence and the ceaseless siege of countless men had ultimately hardened an unshakable conviction within her.

As long as she willed it, no man on earth would be able to refuse her.

That certainty had swelled into an excessive, absurd confidence that bordered on arrogance. Her brother had already warned her how things really were, and even so she remained convinced that, if she truly set her mind to it, that if she just changed her attitude, winning Marcus over would be no trouble at all.

The problem was the information gap between the two of them, so enormous that it made every one of her schemes ridiculous.

As a reincarnated person, Marcus had known from the very first moment her identity, her abilities, her character, and even her weak points.

And her?

She only knew that he was a lustful and special human.

That was why she took that satisfied smile to be that of a man who had just possessed her, without even suspecting that it was, in reality, the delight of someone who had just collected a reward from a system.

She took the strokes on her head and the neatly tucked blanket for affection, for attachment, when they were nothing more than the distracted pampering one lavishes on a pet.

She read her absolute lack of defenses as a display of complete trust, without understanding that Marcus knew himself to be so far above her that he could sleep motionless at her side without fearing the slightest scratch.

And she believed that "good night" meant a total acceptance of everything she was. It did, yes... but only of how well she’d "held up" the entire night.

It was those illusions, fed by her blind faith in her own beauty, that made her, the moment she stepped out of the room, abruptly recover her old Oiran arrogance, haughty and domineering.

In that instant, in the whole mansion there didn’t seem to be anyone above her except, perhaps, Marcus himself.

And as fate’s whim would have it, just as she was about to head downstairs to snoop around the mansion, she came face to face with Tamayo, who at that moment was stepping out of the laboratory on her way to her room, ready to rest.

Daki looked her up and down with a gaze laden with a contempt she didn’t bother to hide.

This woman who betrayed Muzan-sama, this deserter who hides under the wing of a human just to keep breathing...

Does she really think she’ll get to live so peacefully forever!?

Coming to a stop, she rested her right hand on her hip and lifted her chin slightly.

"You."

"Show me around the mansion."

Tamayo looked at her.

She noticed the collar of the pink kimono, visibly torn, and on that weary yet pride-filled face...

She lowered her eyes, and the corners of her lips curved into a faint arc.

"Show you around?"

"By what authority does Miss Warabihime ask me to accompany her on a tour of this place?"

Daki narrowed her eyes. Her smile faded a little.

"What do you think?"

Tamayo didn’t answer.

She simply stayed where she was, watching Daki in silence, that smile intact.

There was no hostility in it. No jealousy, no mockery, not the faintest hint of provocation. Only a serenity that seemed to see everything with absolute clarity... and that, quite simply, didn’t consider it worth pointing out aloud.

Daki’s smile froze little by little.

Under the moonlight, the two women regarded each other down the length of the deserted hallway, without saying a word.

One overflowed with arrogance, the other with a profound serenity.

One was convinced she had won, and the other... didn’t seem to care about the outcome.
