Chapter 970: The Final Connection

The hand crossed the channel up to the wrist before meeting resistance. The structure was too large to belong to any creature capable of physically existing inside the Heart Chamber, formed from dark skin, golden plates, and inscriptions that reorganized whenever they touched the air of the North. The fingers opened above the frozen lake and tried to reach the blue chain, but Strax pulled it back at the same instant, using his own body as an obstacle between the manifestation and the anchor. The mark across his chest burned when the entity realized the trap. The black lines penetrated deeper, tightening around his heart and trying to seize control of his mana channels, while the golden eye formed from sand turned directly toward him.

"You called me a key," Strax said, keeping one hand closed around the chain and the other prepared in front of the manifestation. "Then you should have realized that a key can also lock a door."

The hand tried to retreat, but Frieren activated the first layer of barriers before the fingers could cross the channel again. Runes appeared across the entire surface of the Heart Chamber, connecting the lake, the door, and the ancient columns of blue ice. Instead of blocking the passage, the magic narrowed the connection around the entity’s arm, trapping the manifestation between the desert and the North. The pressure that followed made the walls vibrate, but Mercedes responded from outside, pouring her authority into the castle’s structures. The ancestral ice thickened around the chamber, filled every crack, and isolated the space from the rest of the fortress. Monica monitored everything through the instruments installed in the corridor and ordered everyone to maintain their positions, even when the entire castle began feeling the effects of the presence.

The entity abandoned its attempt to retreat and attacked Strax directly. The fingers closed around his body before he could change position, compressing bones and scales beneath a force that continued increasing. At the same time, the authority crossed the mark and entered his mind, dragging with it images of the desert, buried cities, and thousands of people who had lost their own names throughout the ages. Strax saw entire armies kneeling before a crowned figure, children forgetting the faces of their parents, and rulers offering cities in exchange for remaining within the memories of whatever lived beneath the sand. The entity was not merely trying to intimidate him. It wanted to overload his identity with the names it had consumed, turning him into another extension of its will.

Strax closed his eyes and stopped resisting in the expected way. Instead of protecting each memory individually, he focused on a single certainty the entity could not alter. He knew who he was. Not because the world recognized his name, not because he ruled Asgard, or because others depended on him, but because he had repeatedly chosen what he wanted to protect. The buried presence could show him thousands of erased lives, but it could not transform his own decisions into something belonging to it.

"You spent so long stealing names that you forgot something simple," Strax said, opening his eyes as White Fire began circulating beneath his skin. "A name is not the same as a person."

The energy exploded outward from his body and crossed the fingers holding him, not as a broad flame, but as dozens of concentrated lines seeking the inscriptions carved into the entity’s flesh. Every symbol reached by White Fire disappeared, severing small fragments of authority supporting the manifestation. The hand loosened enough for Strax to free one arm. He seized the colossal thumb, turned his body, and used the entity’s own weight to pull it farther into the Heart Chamber. The reaction was immediate. The channel widened, the golden eye expanded, and part of a forearm covered in chains crossed the frozen lake.

Frieren realized what he was doing and activated the second layer. The barriers closed behind the manifestation, interrupting communication with the main body for short intervals. It was still impossible to completely sever the connection, but every interruption forced the entity to rebuild the path, consuming the energy it used to maintain the arm in the North.

"Keep pulling," she ordered through the crystal attached near the door. "The more authority crosses over, the less remains protecting the channel on the other side."

"You could have explained that part earlier."

"You were already doing it."

Strax released a brief laugh despite the pressure and pulled again. The entity responded by creating a second hand from the sand scattered across the floor. The new structure appeared behind him, incomplete and weaker, but fast enough to seize the blue chain. The instant its fingers touched the ice, a vibration crossed the castle and reached the White Labyrinth. Vex felt the connection and curled up inside the arms of the trusted maid watching her, although Mercedes remained physically in front of the Heart Chamber. The child was far away, protected by paths that changed every minute, but her authority remained connected to the anchor.

"It touched the chain," Vex said through the small crystal Mercedes had left with the maid. Her voice was frightened, but conscious. "It is trying to call the others."

Mercedes heard the message and closed her eyes for an instant. Then she placed both hands against the frozen door and answered her daughter.

"Do not listen. Hold only what belongs to you."

"I do not know how."

"You do. Do not search for the other children. Do not search for the desert. Think about me and your father."

Inside the chamber, the chain became colder. The blue energy that had previously spread in unstable waves concentrated around the hand of sand and froze its fingers. Vex was not attacking the entity or trying to understand the crown’s function. She was simply refusing to allow something unknown to use what belonged to her. The response was simple, but sufficient. The second hand cracked and lost its shape, returning the sand to the lake before it could transmit pressure to the other six anchors.

Strax felt the reaction and used the opening. Black Ice appeared over the entity’s true forearm and advanced in the opposite direction from White Fire, freezing the inscriptions that remained active. The combination did not attempt to destroy the colossal flesh. Instead, it separated the manifestation from the authority sustaining it. The hand began losing consistency, alternating between real matter, sand, and a heavy shadow unable to decide which world it belonged to.

The golden eye narrowed, and a voice crossed the entire chamber, far clearer than before.

"YOU CANNOT KEEP ME HERE."

Strax adjusted the position of his feet over the frozen lake and pulled the chain again with one hand, keeping the entity’s arm trapped with the other.

"I do not need to keep you here."

Monica had been waiting for that exact response. She sent the third signal, and every group positioned around the castle activated the structures prepared during the journey. Samira and Cassandra destroyed the four sand obelisks that appeared on the slopes. Daniela and Kali severed the lines trying to reach the underground. Beatrice and the knights released mana over the northern wall, while Ouroboros held the threads connected to the other crowns, preventing the entity from transferring pressure to a different point. For the first time since awakening, the buried being was limited to a single path.

Frieren closed the third barrier.

The channel was severed behind the elbow.

The colossal hand stopped receiving energy from the main body and fell onto the lake with all the physical weight it had acquired while crossing. The impact destroyed part of the ice and launched Strax against a column, but he stood before the manifestation could use the remaining matter to return. The mark across his chest tried to open a new path, spreading black lines toward his neck and face. He drove his fingers into his own flesh, seized the cluster of filaments, and pulled, tearing some of them out along with blood and draconic energy.

The entity used the final connection to speak directly inside his mind. It showed Vex again, this time as an adult wearing a broken crown over a frozen kingdom. It showed Asgard buried and Monica kneeling before nameless archives. Then it offered one final possibility: voluntarily open the chain and receive enough authority to control everything the adaptive network had created. Strax could command an army capable of evolving against any enemy, prevent new wars, and destroy every threat before it reached his family.

He looked toward the severed arm lying over the lake and released White Fire into the mark still remaining across his chest.

"You really learned nothing from watching me."

The lines burned from the inside out. Black Ice sealed the channels immediately afterward, preventing any fragment from escaping or reconnecting. Frieren activated the final rune around the door, and the energy torn from the mark was directed toward the colossal hand. The manifestation began dissolving, not in an explosion, but in successive layers. The golden plates lost their shine, the inscriptions disappeared, and the dark skin became ordinary sand, incapable of sustaining any authority away from the main body.

The eye formed above the lake remained for several more seconds. Its pupil stayed fixed on Strax, but it could no longer exert pressure over him.

"I WILL REMEMBER."

Strax advanced until he stood in front of the unstable form.

"Good. Remember that you failed."

He closed his hand, and White Fire crossed by Black Ice struck the center of the eye. The sand was consumed, the channel closed, and the Heart Chamber became completely silent. The blue chain continued vibrating for several moments before returning to its original position, more stable than before. The patches of sand on the lake disappeared, and the presence of the desert stopped reaching the North.

Frieren opened the door only after confirming no connection remained active. Mercedes entered first, examining the chain and then Strax. The mark had disappeared, although a dark scar remained across his chest.

"Is it over?" she asked.

"This attempt is over," Frieren replied before Strax could speak. "The entity remains imprisoned in the desert, but it lost the network, the twelve outposts, the connection to Vex, and the channel created through Strax. The seven crowns are stable again."

Monica entered immediately afterward carrying the ancient map. The eight lines had disappeared. Only the original seven layers remained, closed and without any light coming from the center.

"We also destroyed the points that allowed the prison to be studied and fed from outside. It will not be able to repeat the same process quickly."

Strax breathed deeply and felt his regeneration return to its normal rhythm.

"Then we are finished."

Hours later, he found Vex at the center of the White Labyrinth. The child released the maid’s hand as soon as she saw him and ran forward, gripping his waist tightly. Strax crouched despite his wounds and lifted her into his arms. Vex touched the dark scar across his chest, frowned, and asked whether the thing beneath the sand still remembered him.

"It does."

"Is that bad?"

Strax looked toward Mercedes, who remained several steps behind, then returned his attention to the child.

"No. Now it also knows it cannot come and take you."

Vex accepted the answer and rested her head against his shoulder. Outside, the sky was beginning to brighten above the northern mountains. The adaptive army had been destroyed, the ancient outposts had stopped breathing, and the buried entity had returned to isolation. Six other crowns still existed across the world, along with questions that would need answers someday, but that battle had ended.

For the first time since the creatures appeared in the desert, the ground remained still.
