Demonic Dragon: Harem System

Chapter 967: The Prison

Strax stopped moving his wings before reaching the opening above the chamber. The ceiling was still collapsing, the organic channels burned beneath the advance of White Fire, and large blocks of stone crossed the space around him, but none of that demanded his attention at that moment. The pulse coming from the depths was unlike anything he had felt since entering the desert. It did not carry the agitation of the network, the speed of the adaptive creatures, or the desperation of an organism trying to preserve its own existence. It was slow, heavy, and regular, like the heart of something that had no need to hurry because it had survived too long to consider a few centuries relevant.

A second pulse crossed the facility. The organic walls that remained intact lost all movement, and even the White Fire released by Strax wavered for an instant. It was not extinguished, but bent toward the ground as though an invisible pressure were pulling the flames downward. The Black Ice accumulated in the cracks responded as well, forming long crystals that pointed toward the same place. Whatever was buried there was not trying to copy his elements. The presence merely recognized them as part of the environment and forced them to obey a power far older than the destroyed network.

The communication crystal vibrated against a scale near his neck. Monica’s voice came through heavy interference, asking whether he had left the core. Strax continued staring at the fissure opened at the bottom of the chamber and answered without looking away.

"Not yet. There is something beneath the facility."

"Another creature?"

"No."

He felt the third pulse before continuing. This time, the ground sank almost half a meter. The walls split, the pale mass of the false dragon disappeared beneath the debris, and an irregular opening formed below the place where the network’s core had existed. There were no filaments, cocoons, or organic matter inside it. Only black stone, far too smooth to be natural, covered in golden lines that had remained dark for so long that some of them had blended into the rock itself.

"This was already here before the network," Strax concluded.

Monica took only a few seconds to understand the implication.

"Then the outposts were not built only to feed those creatures."

"Perhaps they were not built for them at all."

The facility began to collapse completely. Strax opened his wings and moved toward the fissure before the ceiling sealed the path. He used his body to break through the falling stone and descended, passing through layers of ancient structures while the rest of the chamber collapsed above him. He was not diving blindly. The presence continued pulsing, offering a precise direction, and the closer he came, the more obvious it became that the adaptive network had grown over something that already existed.

The passage ended at a solid surface.

Strax struck the stone with all four paws and spread cracks for dozens of meters, but the floor did not give way. The black rock endured his weight and the force of the impact without suffering any damage beyond the superficial marks left by his claws. When he raised his head, he realized he was not inside an ordinary chamber. The space extended in every direction beyond the reach of the light, and the ceiling was too high to be seen. Golden lines crossed the floor in concentric circles, connecting colossal pillars positioned around a central depression.

The smell had changed as well. There was no flesh, blood, or moisture. The air carried ancient dust, burned metal, and something resembling mana frozen inside a weapon for thousands of years.

Strax walked slowly toward the center. The size of his body, which had made the previous facility feel cramped, seemed small inside that structure. Each pillar was wide enough to support a fortress, and all of them were covered in claw marks, cuts, and inscriptions belonging to different peoples. Some lines had been drawn by human hands. Others appeared draconic. There were demonic symbols, elven runes, and geometric forms Strax did not recognize.

Several civilizations had found that place.

Several had tried to reinforce it.

None appeared to have trusted the work of the one before it.

Frieren’s voice replaced Monica’s through the crystal.

"Strax, the map changed."

He stopped.

"What happened?"

"The outpost lines disappeared after the cores were destroyed, but another pattern appeared beneath them. It is much larger. The twelve points formed only the outer circle."

Strax looked at the pillars around him and understood that she was describing exactly what he saw.

"How many layers?"

"Seven."

The answer confirmed a suspicion he had not wanted to form so soon. The adaptive network was not the core of the threat. It was a later layer, perhaps created by someone who had tried to use what existed beneath the desert or by an organism that had grown from the energy leaking through the seal. The twelve outposts formed only the most recent part of a far older structure.

"Gather everyone outside the desert," Strax ordered. "No one approaches the center until I understand what was opened."

Monica immediately returned to the communication.

"You are alone beneath a facility that just collapsed, standing in front of something we cannot measure. That order should apply to you too."

"I am already here."

"That does not make the situation better."

Strax released a short breath through his nostrils but did not argue.

"The others would not survive the pressure. Keep them outside and prepare the evacuation of the nearby cities. I do not know whether destroying the network weakened the seal or merely revealed its existence."

Monica remained silent for several seconds. When she answered, her voice carried no approval, only acceptance of reality.

"You have twenty minutes. After that, I begin removing every team, with or without answers."

"That will be enough."

He disconnected the crystal before she could question the confidence behind that statement and continued forward. The central depression was covered by a thick layer of fine sand, even though there was no visible opening to the surface. Every pulse caused the grains to rise several centimeters before returning to the ground. Strax brought one claw closer and realized the sand was not moving randomly. It formed lines, symbols, and fragments of words that vanished before they could be completed.

When he placed one paw inside the circle, every pillar reacted.

The marks carved into their surfaces lit up in sequence. First the human inscriptions, then the elven, demonic, and draconic ones. The light traveled through the invisible ceiling and revealed chains larger than towers descending toward the center. They were not attached to any visible body. They disappeared into the sand, stretched at different angles, as though restraining something buried even deeper.

The pressure increased.

Strax opened his wings to maintain his balance but did not retreat. Scales rose along his neck, and Black Ice grew naturally over his joints, reacting to the presence below. White Fire illuminated the inside of his throat, not because he was preparing an attack, but because his body recognized the danger before his mind could determine its form.

The sand began to move away.

It was not thrown to the sides. It descended slowly, pulled into an opening forming at the center of the depression. First, a curved golden surface appeared. Strax thought it was a metal plate, but then the structure moved and a vertical slit opened in the middle.

It was an eye.

The visible portion alone was large enough to occupy half the circle. The golden iris contracted when it found Strax, while the black pupil adjusted its focus with an almost conscious slowness. There was no surprise in that movement. The buried thing had not awakened without knowing what it would find. It looked at him like someone finally confirming information received long ago.

Strax held its gaze.

The pressure tried to enter his mind in the next instant. It did not come as a voice, image, or direct order. It was an attempt to establish authority, to place everything that existed in that chamber beneath the buried presence. The pillars groaned, the chains tightened, and the stone beneath Strax’s paws began to sink.

He remained standing.

The force crossed his scales, compressed his muscles, and reopened several wounds from the previous battle. Even so, Strax did not lower his head. Draconic energy traveled through his body and confronted the invisible authority without trying to destroy it. It was not a simple contest of power.

It was a direct refusal.

"You watched the network copy me," he said, maintaining his gaze on the pupil. "Then you already know that does not work on me."

The eye narrowed.

The sand around it formed a word.

DRAGON.

Strax did not answer immediately. The writing dissolved, and another word appeared.

KEY.

The word remained longer. The chains vibrated, and quick images crossed Strax’s mind: buried cities, kneeling armies, seven frozen structures positioned across the continent, and a blue-haired child holding a pendant near her chest. The image of Vex disappeared before he could react, replaced by a chain covered in ice cracking beneath the sand.

The buried thing knew Vex.

More importantly, it considered her part of the seal.

Strax’s pressure changed immediately. White Fire spread over his wings while Black Ice covered the ground around his paws. The reaction was so fast that several inscriptions on the pillars went dark.

"You will not touch her."

The eye showed no fear. The sand formed another sentence, slowly, as though the entity were still recovering the ability to use words.

SHE HAS ALREADY TOUCHED ME.

Strax advanced to the edge of the opening. The chains reacted, crossing in front of the eye, but he managed to see something beyond them. The golden structure was not part of an adaptive creature or an enormous animal. Dark skin surrounded it, covered in ancient plates and symbols carved directly into the flesh. One of the chains disappeared inside the eyelid, holding the eye partially closed.

The network had grown over that prison for decades, perhaps centuries. It had consumed animals, absorbed mana, and constructed adaptive organisms because it was being fed by leaks from something it could not reach directly. By destroying the network and the outposts, Asgard had eliminated an immediate threat, but had also removed the layer hiding the true seal.

Monica’s voice came through the crystal.

"Strax, we are recording subsidence across the entire central region. What is happening?"

He kept his eyes on the entity.

"We found the source."

"Is it the creature?"

"No. The creatures were only something growing above it."

Another chain groaned. A thin crack appeared across the ice covering one of the pillars. The golden eye moved toward the sound, and for the first time, Strax perceived clear intent within its presence.

The thing was not merely awakening.

It was searching for the part of the prison that had weakened.

Strax spread his wings completely and released Black Ice across the circle. Instead of attacking the eye, he directed the power toward the chains, pillars, and inscriptions still containing the entity. The ice spread through the damaged structures and filled the cracks, reinforcing them temporarily. The authority of the cold met resistance, but a similar energy answered from somewhere far away, connecting to the seal for several seconds.

Vex.

Even from a distance, the child had felt the movement.

The golden eye partially closed as the cold intensified. The sand formed one final sentence before being covered by Strax’s ice.

NOW I REMEMBER YOU.

The entire chamber shook. One of the chains shifted several meters but did not break. Strax maintained the Black Ice over the seal while the ceiling began collapsing from the destruction of the upper facility. He could not kill that thing at that moment. Perhaps no one could. But he could still prevent the counterattack from turning a victory into a release.

"Monica, remove everyone from the desert now," he ordered. "Tell Mercedes to take Vex to the deepest chamber in the North. Frieren must analyze all seven layers of the map and prevent anyone from speaking names near the sand."

"Why?"

Strax stared at the nearly closed eye beneath the ice.

"Because this thing was not sleeping."

He reinforced the final chain when another crack appeared.

"It was waiting for someone to remove what had grown over the prison."

Above him, the desert began collapsing into the chamber. Strax opened his wings, gathered White Fire around his body, and advanced toward the surface before millions of tons of sand sealed the passage.

Behind him, far beneath the dunes, the golden eye closed again.

But it did not return to sleep.
