Chapter 149: The Floating City of Bound Souls
Outside the main chamber the other four women found a side hall lined with polished femurs and slept in a loose cluster.
Lucy kept her blade within reach. Serakel’s third eye remained half open even in rest. Isha and the Reverend Mother Superior lay close enough that their skin touched.
Dawn came without birdsong. The crystal sun rose pale and distant over the black water of the swamps.
Nima entered the main chamber and bowed. "Master. The chariot is ready. The path toward the center is clear for now."
Levi rose. Vespera stood with him, still naked. He pointed to a pile of stitched skins that had once been part of her court. "Cover yourself. We leave."
She wrapped a long cloak of pale skin around her body. The others entered a moment later, already dressed in what remained of their own clothes. The scent of the previous claims still clung faintly to all of them.
They left the bone fortress together. The restless dead that lined the paths stood motionless as the group passed. No green light moved in their empty sockets. The stacked skeletons of the gates remained open.
The chariot waited on the dry bone clearing. The four slime-headed horses snorted blue vapor into the morning air. Nima held the reins.
Levi entered first and took the center seat. Lucy sat on his right. Vespera took the left. Serakel, Isha, and the Reverend Mother Superior settled across from them. The door closed. Nima cracked the reins.
The chariot lifted with a low roar of blue light. The bone fortress and the black water of the swamps fell away beneath them as they turned toward the true center of Neverland.
For the first hours the land below remained swamp and twisted trees. Then the water dried. The trees thinned. Black stone plains stretched out, cracked and empty. In the far distance a single dark shape began to rise against the crystal sky.
Levi watched it grow. "That is it."
Vespera’s living eyes stayed on the horizon. "The Heart of Chains. It does not sit on the ground. It hangs."
As the chariot flew closer the shape resolved. A vast city of living metal and black iron floated above a bottomless pit.
Countless chains thicker than tree trunks anchored it to the edges of the pit and to the sky itself. Some chains hung loose, swaying slowly. Others were pulled tight. Figures moved along the chains like ants. Bound souls.
The city itself was a mass of interlocking towers, bridges, and platforms made of dark metal that seemed to breathe.
Windows glowed with cold white light. At the highest point a single spire rose higher than the rest, wrapped in chains that moved on their own.
Lucy’s hand rested on the hilt of her blade. "How many are bound there?"
"More than can be counted," Vespera answered. "Every soul the Mother has claimed since the beginning of this land. Some still remember their names. Most do not."
Isha’s voice was quiet. "And the Mother?"
"She sits at the center of the highest spire," Vespera said. "She rarely leaves it. She does not need to. The chains reach everywhere."
Levi’s Sovereign Sigil pulsed once under his robe. A faint pressure had begun to press against the golden barrier of his domain the moment the floating city came into clear view.

He looked at the five women seated with him. "When we land, stay close. Do not touch any chain unless I tell you to. The moment one of you is marked, she can pull."
Serakel’s third eye opened fully. "And if she marks you?"
Levi smiled. "Then she will learn what happens when a chain tries to hold a Sovereign."
The chariot began its descent toward a wide platform of black metal that jutted out from the lower edge of the floating city.
Several loose chains hung near it, swaying in a wind that did not touch the rest of the air. No guards stood visible. The platform was empty.
Nima guided the horses down. The chariot touched the metal with a soft metallic ring. The door opened.
Levi stepped out first. The air here was colder and carried a faint taste of iron. The platform vibrated under his boots with a low, constant pulse, as if the entire city were a single living heart.
Lucy followed close. Then Vespera, Serakel, Isha, and the Reverend Mother Superior. Nima remained with the chariot, eyes wide as she stared up at the hanging mass of metal and chains.
A single chain thicker than a man’s torso hung from the platform and led upward into the lower levels of the city. It swayed slowly, the links engraved with countless tiny names.
Levi looked up the length of it. Somewhere high above, in the highest spire, the Mother of Chains already knew they had arrived.
He placed one foot on the first link of the great chain.
"We climb," he said.
The five women followed.
...
The great chain swayed under their weight. Each link was wider than a man’s shoulders and cold enough to burn bare skin.
Levi climbed first, hands gripping the engraved metal, boots finding purchase on the curved surfaces.
The five women followed in a line. Lucy directly behind him, then Vespera, Serakel, Isha, and the Reverend Mother Superior at the rear.
The air grew heavier with every length they ascended. The low pulse of the floating city vibrated through the chain and into their bones.
Far below, the bottomless pit waited in perfect blackness. Far above, the mass of living metal and moving chains blocked more and more of the crystal sky.
Bound souls clung to some of the neighboring chains. Most were little more than dried figures wrapped in iron links. A few still had eyes. Those eyes tracked the climbing group without expression.
Levi’s Sovereign Sigil burned steadily under his robe. The golden barrier around him pushed back against the constant pressure of the Mother’s domain.
