Chapter 186: The Last Name on the Map
The pit-wyrm hybrid hit the gate a second time. Iron screamed. A wide section tore free and crashed inward. The hybrid shoved through the gap like a living avalanche, scattering the soldiers who had been bracing the other side.
Lucy whooped and sprinted after it. "I love this beast!"
Isha followed, slime already forming into wide nets. "I am claiming the ones that try to run. Fair warning."
Serakel moved with surgical calm, cutting down anyone who tried to reform a line. The Reverend Mother Superior advanced at a steady pace, her light forcing soldiers to drop weapons or lose the ability to hold them.
Vespera stayed close to Levi as he walked through the ruined gate. Her voice was low and almost amused. "She is still trying to give orders. Adorable."
Inside the Red Spires the architecture was severe and brutal: high red-stone towers bound with black iron, narrow streets designed for defense, and every surface built to funnel attackers into killing grounds. It was not working.
Demons in crimson armor tried to form shield walls. The hybrid simply walked through them. Lucy and Isha turned the resulting chaos into a competition of who could drop more soldiers in under a minute. Serakel dismantled the remaining heavy weapons with cold precision. The Reverend Mother Superior made certain no one on the upper walkways enjoyed a clear shot.
Commander Saria dropped from the gatehouse in a controlled leap, glaive already spinning. She landed twenty paces from Levi and leveled the weapon at his chest.
"You will go no further," she said. The words were steady. Her eyes were not.
Levi kept walking. The golden barrier of the Sovereign Domain expanded until the air itself seemed to thicken.
"You already lost the gate," he said. "You already lost the walls. Kneel and the rest of your people live. Continue and I will take the Spires the same way I took everything else."
Saria's grip tightened on the glaive. For a moment it looked like she might charge anyway. Then she glanced past him at the five women who had already reduced her disciplined ranks to scattered, bleeding groups, at the hybrid that was currently sitting on what remained of a siege engine, and at the gold light that refused to yield.
Something in her calculation finally shifted.
She drove the glaive point-first into the stone and dropped to one knee.
"The Red Spires yield," she said, voice rough. "Master."
Levi stopped in front of her. Gold light gathered in his palm and sank into her without resistance.
[Expending 3,500 Aether]
[Sovereign Domain: Direct Claim]
[Target: Commander Saria of the Red Spires]
[Desire Level: 0% → 100%]
[Claim Complete]
Saria shuddered once as the mark took. When she lifted her head again the crimson authority in her eyes had been replaced by gold-rimmed obedience.
Around them the remaining soldiers followed her lead in a spreading wave of dropped weapons and kneeling forms. The towers of the Red Spires stood silent under the new light.
Lucy walked up, wiping her blade clean on a fallen banner. "That was faster than the Black Maw. I am almost disappointed."
Isha poked a kneeling soldier with one slime-coated toe. "They folded neatly. I still win the count, by the way."
Vespera's living eyes met Levi's for a brief moment, the earlier intensity still lingering under the surface. "The Spires are yours. The last free court will already know."
Serakel glanced toward the highest tower. "There will be ledgers and armories to secure. And messengers to send."
The Reverend Mother Superior looked over the kneeling ranks with mild approval. "Orderly surrender. How refreshing."
Levi looked down at Commander Saria.
"On your feet. You will show me every command post, every armory, and every remaining officer who has not yet knelt. The Red Spires answer to the Sovereign of Neverland from this moment. Clear?"
"Clear, Master," Saria answered.
Gold light swept outward from the ruined gate, sealing the claim into the red stone and black iron of the towers.
[Domain Claim: Red Spires – Complete]
Levi turned to the five women. The pit-wyrm hybrid gave a low, satisfied rumble and shook broken iron from its scales.
'One more free court down. Only the Drowned Market remains on the old maps. Neverland is almost finished rewriting itself.'
He started toward the central tower. The five women fell in around him, already trading low commentary about which part of the Spires looked the most insulting and therefore needed to be inspected first.
The Red Spires had met the Sovereign. Now they belonged to him.
…
Commander Saria led them through the severe red-stone streets in silence. Every remaining officer they passed dropped to one knee the moment the gold light of the Sovereign Domain touched them. The disciplined ranks of the Red Spires folded with the same efficiency they had once used to hold the walls.
Lucy walked with her usual restless energy, clearly still warm from the fight. "I almost miss the ones who argue longer. These soldiers kneel like they practiced it."
Isha's slime formed a small mock soldier that immediately toppled over. "They did practice. Just for the wrong side."
Vespera's living eyes tracked the upper walkways. "No residual resistance. The claim took cleanly. Saria's authority carried the rest of the chain of command with her."
Serakel's third eye dimmed in satisfaction. "Efficient. The ledgers will be in the central tower. So will the real records of every free court that ever paid them for mercenaries."
The Reverend Mother Superior glanced at the kneeling soldiers with mild approval. "Orderly. I can work with orderly."
Saria stopped at the base of the highest tower and bowed her head. "Master. The command levels are above. The primary armory is through the eastern arch. Every officer of rank is already accounted for. Those who attempted to flee the outer posts have been brought back."
Levi gave a short nod. "Show me the records."
They climbed. The interior of the central tower was as severe as the outside: clean lines, black-iron fixtures, and no decoration that did not serve a purpose. Gold light moved ahead of them, unlocking every door and sealing every claim as they passed.
In the highest chamber a wide table of dark stone held maps, deployment stones, and sealed message tubes. Saria stood to the side while Levi placed one hand on the central map. Gold light sank into the stone. Old alliances and payment records rewrote themselves under the Sovereign Domain.
[Domain Claim: Red Spires – Fully Secured]
[Mercenary Networks: Absorbed]
[Outgoing Authority: Active]
Lucy leaned over the table and tapped one of the remaining marked locations. "There it is. The Drowned Market. Last name on the list."
Isha peered at the map, slime dripping curiously onto the stone and then retracting. "They are under the sulfuric lakes, right? I bet it smells amazing."
Vespera's voice was cool. "They will try to bargain first. When that fails they will try to drown whatever they cannot buy."
Serakel nodded. "Their strength is information and liquid assets. Not walls. Not ranks. They will be slippery."
The Reverend Mother Superior sighed. "Of course the last one has to be the one that involves unpleasant liquids."
Levi studied the final mark on the map. The Drowned Market sat beneath a cluster of sulfuric lakes far to the southwest, connected by submerged tunnels and floating platforms. It was the last major free court that had never fully bowed to the old witches or to him.
'Three courts taken in sequence. The Market already knows it is alone. That will make them either very generous or very stupid.'
He looked at Saria. "You will hold the Red Spires. Maintain the ranks. Keep the forges and training grounds active under the new mark. If the Drowned Market sends anything other than immediate submission while I am gone, you will answer it the same way I answered your gate."
"Yes, Master," Saria answered.
Levi turned to the five women. "We rest here for one cycle. Eat. Re-arm if you need it. At the next turn we leave for the Drowned Market. I want the last free court under the mark before any of the smaller settlements decide they still have options."
Lucy stretched until her spine cracked. "One cycle of real beds and food that is not travel rations. I accept these terms."
Isha raised both hands. "I want a bath that is not made of sulfur. Is that possible here?"
Saria glanced at Levi for permission, then answered. "The lower officer quarters have clean water. I will have them prepared."
Vespera gave a small nod. "Acceptable."
Serakel already rolled the relevant section of the map. "The southwestern route will take five cycles if we avoid the worst of the sulfur lakes. Four if we cut across the edges and accept the smell."
The Reverend Mother Superior looked resigned. "We are going to accept the smell, are we not?"
Levi's internal voice was dry.
'Of course we are.'
He gave the final orders. Saria moved to carry them out. The five women claimed rooms in the upper officer levels without further discussion. The pit-wyrm hybrid was given the main courtyard and seemed entirely satisfied with the arrangement.
Levi stood alone for a short time in the highest chamber, looking down through a narrow window at the red-stone city now quiet under gold light.
'The Red Spires are finished. The Drowned Market is the last name on the old maps. After that, Neverland's free courts will be a memory. The underground will belong to the mark in full.'
Outside, the banners of the Red Spires still hung in the hot air, but the authority that had once filled them was already gone. Messengers were already moving. The final free court would hear the news before the next full cycle turned.
The Sovereign of Neverland rested for the first time inside the walls he had just taken, five dangerous women nearby and only one major target left on the board.
