Devil's Music

< 152: Don Ghost and Blues Club (4) >

Gun followed Sambo's instructions to find the underground practice room across from the club. Whether it was originally a practice room or not, the practice room in the basement of the general store was divided into several rooms. When I showed my face to the manager, I was sitting on a chair in the practice room with no one to guide me to a fairly wide practice room where I had been contacted in advance, and I was learning about 'a decade of soul’ on my cell phone.

A decade of soul. ’

Looking at the results of the search for them for a long time, I suddenly remembered a conversation with Sambo.

“Yes? Am I performing? I'm just a learner, so I'm not good enough to go on stage. ”

“Haha, just your name is enough. As soon as your name hits the rolling banner, our customers will grow. ”

“But wouldn't that be a problem for the band? ”

“Who do you think you are? You've joined Eric Clipton as an introduction. It's not just students. If you show it to the public, the band members will shrink. ”

“It's nice of you to give me a chance to perform, but... why are you doing this? ”

“Haha, like I said, I'm a businessman. It's brilliant to smell something that makes money. And that's why I'm sitting here. Music is art to you, right? For me, it's a business. It's a music business, and that's why I exist today. ”

Gun shakes his head as he recalls his conversation with Sambo.

‘You don't look like someone who's been bitten by money, but you have to go through it. ’

The gun raised its wrist and looked at the watch.

‘Afternoon. Band practice starts at 4: 30 in the afternoon, but you're early. In the meantime, why don't we play? ’

Gun pulls Haku out and connects him to the amp. There was an amp called Marshall JCM 2000 because it was a practice room at a top club. You plug the jack into the amp and flick Haku to make a satisfactory smile.

What a sound! ’

Gun has played the 'Knock on Wood' leaf section of 'A Decade of Soul'. This time, I connected my smartphone to the amp, played the same music, and started playing my own guitar ad. The first improvisation was awkward, but soon after the fun and fun it gave me, I took out my notes and began writing the music notes that were heard through the amp. The finished sheet of music begins to turn red at the tips of the gun. Seeing the musical notes looking for color made me look strange.

Black?

Between the red notes, the black notes begin to come in color. The gradually changing colors turned into confusing notes mixed with red and black. The gun tilts its head, thinking.

"Red for passion and affection, black for vanity and despair? What does that mean?"

The gun turned the reef into an adrenaline drip, as the score suggests. At the end of the gun, the notes of the music spilled out the original emotions that the music was trying to give you. Playing one song to the end swept my chin with serious eyes.

‘I feel right... If I can't interpret the song properly, this is just a skill. ’

Suddenly, the door of the practice room opened wide, and two white men came in with guitar bags and looked at each other with surprised eyes. They were both wearing horn-rimmed glasses, one with a dumb hat and the other with short blonde hair brushed backwards.

The gun looks at the two of you and stands up to greet you.

“How do you do?"

The short blonde man looks up and down.

“Oh, hey, K. I've heard the stories before. Did you just play it yourself? ”

I smiled at you with an embarrassed look on my face.

“Oh, yeah, I was just practicing for a while. ”

The man in the bungee hat drops his guitar.

“You're not a famous person. I can't believe you're just practicing. It was amazing. My name is Liz. ”

The short blonde man said immediately after.

“I'm Letty, by the way. Nice to meet you."

The gun turns and smiles at the two of you.

“Thank you for the opportunity, Kay. ”

Letty frowns for a moment and says,

“At first, I thought that one of the students who wanted to learn Blues was helping a famous student who was known to the public, but I changed my mind when I heard you play. Rather, we're going to need help. ”

Gun swung his hand and said.

“No, you have to help me a lot. I still don't understand blues. ”

Liz takes out her guitar and sits down in a chair.

“If Kay's understanding is short, what are we? I've been blushing for over a decade, but I'm not so good with my skills. ”

The gun scratched his back.

“No, there's still a lot that I don't understand. It's not just a skill, it's a soul. ”

Letty said with a cheerful smile.

“What a surprise! You already know the most important part of playing. So, what part of this don't you understand? ”

The case expressions cautiously, clears his mind for a moment, then says:

“I've been listening to 'A Decade of Soul', and it's dominated by bright, passionate music. But strangely, I feel hopelessness and emptiness in the music. ”

While Letty and Liz were listening, the door opened and a fat 70-year-old black man came in. He opens the door and says without looking.

“That's the blues. I feel that despair and emptiness because I'm Blues. ”

The gun jumps out of its place and greets you.

“Hi, I'm Kay, and I'll be practicing with you starting today. ”

An old man with a look of generosity smiled, fixing the pale sunglasses with bright eyes.

“Yes, nice to meet you. My name is William. I've heard the stories. ”

William shifts his generous body and sits down with his liver erected next to the gun. William breathes, unable to move.

“Have you ever tried blues? ”

“Yes, I was lucky enough to meet a good teacher and have mastered the scale. ”

“Have you never performed before? ”

“Yes, I haven't had a chance yet. ”

“But you read blues' emotions? You didn't just learn from books, you played songs. What was it?”

“Knock on Wood." ”

“I see. It's a good song. And it's full of bright lyrics. And from that song you read despair and nothingness? You're a great friend, huh? Who is the teacher?”

“Ah · · · Eric Clipton. ”

Liz and Letty, who were listening next to me, wake up.

“Yes? Eric Clipton is a teacher? ”

The gun smiles awkwardly and says.

“Well, you don't have to call it a teacher because you've only learned a few weeks, but you're right about learning the blues scale. ”

When Liz and Letty were unable to speak, William said.

“Well, you said Tiz was a genius, and then your mouth went dry. Is that true? Eric Clipton taught me that. ”

“Tiz? Who is that? ”

“The female vocalist of our band. And she's the only woman in the band. ”

“Oh, does he know me? ”

“So, how long ago did you perform in an orchestra at the zoo? Tiz was there. I've been putting your name on my mouth for days since I saw your performance there. Timothy welcomed you with open arms when Sambo asked if you could join him in band practice. ”

“Oh, thank you, haha. I have to be nice to you. ”

“I'm married, so be careful, huh?"

“Oh, I didn't mean that, haha."

William took off his sunglasses for a moment and wiped the lens with a handkerchief out of his pocket.

“Yes, let's go back to that story. Why is there despair and vanity in this passionate song? ”

“Yes, William. I'm a little confused by the contrast. ”

“Have you ever seen the movie '12 Years of Slavery’? ”

“Oh, I haven't seen it yet. ”

“Yes, look for it later. You'll understand if you watch that movie. ”

“Yes, William, I'll be sure to take a look. ”

William took the cigar case out of his arms, opened the lid, and presented it to the gun, and the gun struck him.

“Oh, I don't smoke. ”

After tasting William's regret again, he bites one and lights a fire.

“This is a premium Cuban cigar. I don't give this to people very well. You missed your best shot. ”

When the gun just smiled, William said that it was full of smoke.

“In the Civil War, white farmers with fewer numbers than black slaves used habitual violence to manage their effectiveness. But I was always nervous about slaves who were physically superior. They were anxious, violent at higher levels, and they banned conversations among black slaves. ”

Once more, William breathed his cigar into his mouth and nose as he breathed smoke.

“Black people who lived freely in Africa lived in unspeakable poverty in front of the head of the barbaric white man as slaves as animals. How frustrating! African black people running around hunting in vast grasslands needed a passageway to express everything in order to survive and survive the hard work. So they started throwing up tears at the sky, and that soon became a labor force for the slaves, the Field Hollers. ”

The gun tilts its head and asks.

“Field holler? I've never heard of it. ”

William nods and explains.

“I'm not using it right now, so a young friend might not know. Anyway, it was a spiritual song that appealed to God for the pain, frustration and sullen people who had to do the labor they didn't want, when they could hardly talk to the same black people. Even the white farmers didn't talk about anything. They didn't stop it, because it was a song to overcome painful work. ”

“Field Holler was divided into two parts through the American Civil War and the Industrial Revolution. Gospels and blues are the color of religion. The gospel became, as you know, a genre that added soul to the hymn, and the singing of everyday secular life became blues. ”

William gave a long description at once and then deeply sucked the cigar again.

“Some say blues' lyrics are vulgar. That is, without realizing how field-holer, the source of the blues, reflected a cruel reality. You know there's a lot of secular lyrics in the local folklore, right? ”

“Yes, folklore in my hometown of Korea is often hot during the day when it comes to lyrics. ”

“Yeah, blues started with that, too, so it's a straightforward lyric. Anyway, because of the pain of black slaves in the background, most of the blues are melted by despair and vanity. ”

The case makes a worried face for a moment. William quietly smokes his cigar, looking at the matter in his mind. I thought about it for a while.

“Can non-black people understand that emotion and express it in music? ”

William grins and points at Letty and Liz.

“Do they look black? ”
