Chapter 46: The Only Lesson

I did not know how she flew.

I knew only that her arm was not doing the work.

A current too fine for my senses gathered around the cloth at my neck and supported my weight without choking me. Her Level 10 body had not become monstrously strong. She had taken an ordinary amount of permitted power and applied it with such control that gravity seemed negotiable.

That was not comforting.

I hung beneath her like a wet shirt while the ruined district dropped three hundred metres away. Wind tore the scream out of my mouth and carried it somewhere I hoped nobody would ever find.

"You could hold me differently!"

"You were instructed to be silent."

Then she tilted forward, and my stomach remained behind.

The next few minutes were the most humiliating of my life.

She did not punch monsters apart. She did not race them with impossible physical speed. She barely moved at all.

She hunted by looking.

Her golden eyes settled on a collapsed warehouse. Two fingers traced a line through the air. Sword intent passed through three walls without disturbing the concrete, and something hidden inside died with a sound like wet timber breaking.

[Class-Assisted Kill Confirmed.]

[Experience transferred.]

We changed direction before I saw the body.

A Level 8 creature crawled from an overturned transport, all plated limbs and a mouth that opened vertically. She glanced down. A pale thread crossed its neck.

The head fell. The body took another two steps before learning about it.

She found a pack of six running through a flooded road. They scattered when her presence touched them.

None finished scattering.

Every kill came from the same source: sword mastery too refined for the world around us. Sometimes she moved one finger. Sometimes her gaze and the humming sword at her hip seemed enough.

The blade never left its sheath.

I received the experience anyway.

[Level increased.]

[Adrian Vale has reached Level 11.]

[Active summon synchronisation complete.]

[Manifested Level: 10 → 11]

[Attribute and energy ceilings increased.]

[Existing injuries unchanged.]

[New energy capacity: Unfilled.]

[Duration added: 10% of SS-grade Level 1 duration.]

The next turn relocated several internal organs.

"How many more?" she asked.

I tried to focus on the experience bar while upside down relative to the horizon. "I don’t know. Less if you find something strong. More if you keep killing things that make that noise."

"What noise?"

"The one I make when we turn."

She ignored me and climbed.

Something winged rose from a cluster of towers. It was Level 12, larger than the Eastbridge trucks, and fast enough that I barely saw its first dive.

The cultivator stopped in open air.

Her robes settled around her. Her body did not blur. She did not meet speed with greater speed.

The sheathed sword hummed once.

The creature flew into an invisible plane of intent and separated into four clean pieces around us.

Warm blood missed my face by centimetres.

"I appreciate that," I said faintly.

"You speak too much for one so close to death."

"It keeps happening. I have developed habits."

[Level increased.]

[Adrian Vale has reached Level 12.]

[Active summon synchronisation complete.]

[Manifested Level: 11 → 12]

[Attribute and energy ceilings increased.]

[Existing injuries unchanged.]

[New energy capacity: Unfilled.]

[Duration added: 10% of SS-grade Level 1 duration.]

Nine unspent attribute points blinked at the edge of my vision. I could not have allocated them if the interface offered to pay me.

I was a bundle of laundry travelling at speed.

The woman kept hunting.

The timer fell below two minutes.

She descended into an industrial district where larger creatures had claimed the broad roads. One wore the twisted shell of a bus across its back. Another had rooted itself through a fuel station and covered half the street in pulsing tendrils.

One sweep of her fingers sent two lines of intent in opposite directions.

Both creatures came apart.

The experience bar filled.

[Level increased.]

[Adrian Vale has reached Level 13.]

[Active summon synchronisation complete.]

[Manifested Level: 12 → 13]

[Attribute and energy ceilings increased.]

[Existing injuries unchanged.]

[New energy capacity: Unfilled.]

[Duration added: 10% of SS-grade Level 1 duration.]

[Manifestation Remaining: 00:52]

She stopped in the air.

One moment, the street lay far beneath us. The next, my boots touched cracked pavement. The supporting current vanished, and I immediately fell over.

The cultivator landed without sound.

"There is insufficient time to teach you properly."

"I suspected the flight was not a lesson."

She crouched in front of me. "It was evidence. Power without control is merely a faster death. You have neither, but control is the first absence that can be corrected."

Before I could ask what that meant, she took my chin in one hand and held my head still.

Her index finger touched my forehead.

"This is the only instruction time permits."

I had been beaten by a Level 9 knight. A field boss had thrown me through a wall and broken my ribs.

This was worse.

Something entered my skull and did not stop entering.

Not images.

Structure.

Pathways opened in my awareness, followed by the order in which energy had to pass through them. Principles of flesh, breath, recovery, and accumulation arrived without words. A hundred truths about the body forced themselves into a mind that had not known the questions.

It was a river driven through a keyhole.

I could not scream because my jaw no longer belonged to me. My eyes remained open, but the street disappeared. Somewhere in the flood, I became certain this was how I died—not beneath the ogre’s club, but on my knees before a beautiful woman, destroyed by a gift too large for its container.

Then it stopped.

I fell onto all fours. Blood struck the pavement beneath my nose.

Air returned. I dragged enough of it into my lungs to speak.

What I intended to say began with What the hell and became less respectful from there.

The notification arrived first.

[S-Rank Cultivation Art Acquired: Origin Vessel Reforging Art.]

[Knowledge Imprint Successful.]

[New Cultivation Art Registered.]

I forgot the pain for almost two full seconds.

S-rank.

I stared at the first line until the letters blurred.

Feline Grace was a B-rank passive skill, and it had already changed how efficiently my collection of physical defects could move. This cultivation art stood two full ranks above it.

And it was not meant to help me work around my ruined foundation.

According to the knowledge burning inside my skull, it could rebuild that foundation.

My attention moved to the name.

Origin Vessel Reforging Art.

Even the title sounded less like cultivation and more like my body had failed an inspection and been condemned for reconstruction.

The System unfolded the registered information.

[Origin Vessel Reforging Art]

[Rank: S]

[Type: Body-Reforging and Dimensional-Energy Cultivation Art]

[Function: Gradual reconstruction and strengthening of the host’s physical foundation.]

[Function: Cultivation, accumulation, and refinement of dimensional energy.]

[Function: Improved stamina, healing, and recovery.]

[Requirement: Consistent daily circulation.]

[Advancement Resource: Monster cores or comparable energy-dense materials.]

[Early-Stage Effect: Severe circulation pain.]

[Warning: Forced acceleration risks severe internal injury.]

I read the lines twice.

They stopped being words halfway through the second attempt.

Rebuild the body.

Frail Body. Weak Constitution. Poor Coordination.

The three physical penalties I had accepted in less than a minute when I was twenty, and the three penalties I had been dying beneath every day since the Merge.

Mana Deficiency remained the fourth flaw, restricting ordinary mana while leaving the dimensional energy of my Anchor usable. The art did not promise to turn that restriction into ordinary mana cultivation. It offered something built around the power I could already access.

The art would not remove my penalties tonight. It might not remove them soon. Nothing in the inherited knowledge suggested a miraculous transformation after one painful circulation.

It demanded time.

Daily pain.

Monster cores and other resources I did not possess.

Most dangerously, it demanded restraint from a man whose survival often depended on becoming stronger before the next thing found him.

But it offered a path.

Gradual.

Expensive.

Dangerous.

Possible.

I looked up.

The cultivator was already fading.

"Wait. Your name—"

"Live long enough to ask when next we meet."

It was not a promise that Blind Call would ever find her again. Her expression held no warmth, and the anger had never left her golden eyes.

Then she was gone.

[Manifestation duration complete.]

[Returned to origin dimension.]

[Return Point: Exact origin place and instant.]

[Origin-Time Elapsed: 00:00:00.]

[Injuries, healing, poison, exhaustion, spent energy, and technique backlash retained.]

[Manifestation Instability cleared.]

[Active Summons: 0]

[Blind Call Charges: 0/1]

[Natural charge recovery initiated: 72:00:00.]

The street became painfully ordinary.

I remained on my knees at Level 13.

Twelve minutes earlier, I had been Level 9 with broken ribs and a club descending toward my head. My house lay somewhere behind me, possibly flattened. My pack rested beneath a collapsed factory with most of my food. My skull felt as though somebody had driven a blade through it and left the idea behind.

Inside my mind, an S-rank cultivation art shone like a lit window in a dead building.

Not merely an art.

The Origin Vessel Reforging Art.

A permanent S-rank inheritance from a woman whose name I still did not know.

She had been dragged from behind eight formations and manifested in a ruined world beside a stranger. She had every reason to kill me and no reason to care whether I survived.

She was angry the entire time. She never stopped being angry.

I stared at the acquisition window.

And she gave me an S-rank cultivation art anyway.

Feline Grace had been randomly inherited because Liora reached twenty-five percent Resonance.

This had not come from a milestone, a reward condition, or the System choosing something on my behalf.

The cultivator had chosen to give it to me.

That knowledge struck harder than the rank.

I stayed on my knees in the road for a long time.
