Ms. Zhang said nothing. After all, Bai Zhi was an outsider. Whether she lived or died had nothing to do with her. Her own daughter’s happiness was the most important thing.

"Zhenzhu, now that Bai Zhi is gone, you’ll have to help out with the chores around the house. You can’t be like you were before."

Zhenzhu nodded eagerly. "Fine, fine, fine! Just tell me what you want me to do. Anything that Bai Zhi could do, I can do just as well. You think I’d be any worse than her?"

Ms. Zhang sighed, a flicker of worry in her heart. ’That girl, Zhenzhu, has never done a lick of work in her life. Every time something needed doing, she’d just call for Bai Zhi. She parades around like a young lady of the Bai Family and treats Bai Zhi like her personal maid. As her mother, I never said a word about it, and the old matriarch and Liu just pretended not to notice. Zhenzhu is so used to a life of comfort... I wonder if she can actually handle housework now.’

After Bai Zhi saw Meng Nan and the Jin guard off and returned to the Hu Family home, Zhao Lan immediately pulled her aside. "Zhi’er, hurry and tell me, what was that about the prescription you wrote for Lord Meng? When did you learn to write? And you can even write prescriptions?"

Bai Zhi said, "Mom, I’ve been around Bai Xiaofeng all these years, so I learned how to write a long time ago. I just learned that prescription from a medical book. It’s just something I picked up and put to use."

Zhao Lan was skeptical. "Is that really all there is to it?"

Bai Zhi nodded earnestly. "That’s really all. What else did you think it was?"

Zhao Lan looked at the daughter before her. She was still her daughter, yet she also seemed like a stranger. Thankfully, she was still as caring and devoted as ever.

"Alright, Mom, don’t overthink it. Go get some rest. We still have to go check on our fields this afternoon."

Zhao Lan grunted in assent and turned to head for the wooden cabin out back.

After watching Zhao Lan leave the Hu Family’s property, Bai Zhi turned her gaze toward the main hall and said with a smile, "You can come out now."

Hu Feng’s figure emerged from the shadows behind the main hall door. He crossed the distance to Bai Zhi in just a few strides, his cold, stern eyes fixed on her. "It seems you already know what I was going to say."

Bai Zhi shrugged. "Of course. What else would you talk to me about, other than nagging me to treat your illness?"

A look of displeasure crossed Hu Feng’s face. "We have the silver needles now, and the money for the medicine. What are you still waiting for?"

Bai Zhi tilted her head back slightly. The handsome face before her was filled with gloom, like a pouting child who finally got a piece of candy only to have it snatched away.

She couldn’t help it and let out a snort of laughter. Her large eyes curved into crescents, revealing a row of perfect, pearly teeth, the faint hint of dimples appearing on her cheeks.

She pointed at Hu Feng, laughing. "You aren’t jealous because I treated Lord Meng first, are you?"

Hu Feng didn’t deny it. He raised an eyebrow and said, "There’s a proper order to things. First come, first served. I was clearly first, but you ignored me to treat him."

Bai Zhi’s laughter became even harder to contain. ’This guy is actually hilarious when he tries to be serious.’

"Alright, alright, don’t be mad. I’ll treat you today."

Hu Feng crossed his arms, his handsome eyes narrowing. "Today? What hour?"

’Hah—he really can’t wait.’

"Now. How about right now?" She surrendered. Under the pressure of his gaze, she had no choice but to give in.

Hu Feng turned and coldly tossed two words over his shoulder: "Come here."

Bai Zhi pouted and stuck her tongue out at his cool, retreating back.

Hu Feng entered his room, and Bai Zhi followed. It was her first time inside his room.
