Chapter 456 - 358: Part 2
’That Little White is a natural-born bullshitter!’
’Since she expects me to transform, why didn’t she leave anything good for me?’
’Right now, I’m just a slightly-less-than-ordinary dog. But at the end of the day, I’m still a dog!’
’Isn’t she worried I won’t be able to transform at all?’
’In the end, she just doesn’t care!’
’Hmph!’
’Heartless!’
’Just like her ancestors!’
「The next morning.」
A man and a dog stood atop the mountain, silently watching the trio recede into the distance.
They watched until the figures of the three had vanished completely.
"Mr. Jiang, will she agree?"
If Little White were here, she would have been astonished. ’What the... Dahuang can talk!’
’How dare he lie to her!’
She would’ve had to teach him a lesson!
Jiang Zhishang shook his head. He didn’t know the answer either.
It seemed as if Doctor Wen was veiled by heavenly secrets, preventing him from seeing her clearly.
He could not find the answer to a truth shrouded in confusion.
*
「Ju City, Ju City High School.」
Three days ago, this place had experienced a tragedy, swallowed by a mysterious mist.
It seemed no one had expected the mist to envelop the high school in an instant. They were completely unprepared.
The losses were devastating.
And because rescue came too late, the losses were devastating.
Of the three hundred people in the mist, fewer than ten survived.
The survivors had already been taken in by the relevant organizations and provided with psychological counseling and other forms of protection.
The authorities were busy with the aftermath. So many lives had been lost, after all.
Ju City High School became a forbidden zone.
However, a rumor began to circulate from an unknown source.
Not many people believed this rumor after hearing it, but it spread nonetheless.
Wen Ying happened to hear this rumor while passing through Ju City for a rest with Little White and Kong Jian.
They were eating at the time. The atmosphere in Ju City was perhaps a little different from that of an ordinary city.
Teahouses were popular here, and you could occasionally find storytellers.
Before the mist appeared, this had been the way of life for the people of Ju City.
The place where Wen Ying and the others were eating happened to be a teahouse, so they overheard the news.
"I heard that kid from the Xu Family say his daughter survived because of a dog! Isn’t that ridiculous?"
"It’s completely ridiculous! But with all the even crazier things happening lately, I could almost believe it was a dog."
"Sigh... Don’t you think this is a calamity from the heavens? How could something like this happen!"
"I heard it was a yellow dog. The Xu Family’s youngest daughter was stunned at the time. Faced with the choice between death and following the dog, she actually chose the dog! It’s so strange—she actually made it out safely!"
Little White and Kong Jian were busy eating the local specialty snacks, paying no mind to the miscellaneous chatter.
But Wen Ying heard it.
After staying in Ju City for a night, Wen Ying took Little White and Kong Jian to see the sights.
The streets weren’t crowded, perhaps due to the recent disaster.
Everyone remained wary about going out.
After hearing about Ju City High School, Little White grew curious and wanted to go take a look.
The three of them stood outside Ju City High School, gazing at a place that looked no different from any ordinary high school.
From the outside, it was just a normal high school.
The main gate, the security office, the academic buildings, the athletic field, the dormitories...
Only the entrance was sealed off.
"Young lady, don’t just stare out of curiosity. You could lose your life if you go in there."
Puffing on an old-fashioned pipe, an old man seemed to be just passing by as he stopped beside Wen Ying’s group.
"My grandson... he studied at this high school, too. A pity... A person has no say in matters of life and death!"
Even though Wen Ying and the others hadn’t asked, the old man couldn’t seem to hold it in, chattering on as if a floodgate had opened.
But murky tears slowly welled up in his eyes.
Gazing at a spot inside Ju City High School, he continued, "My family has only had one son for three generations. I’ve come to terms with it. The worst that can happen is my ancestors beat me up after I die. It’s all fate!"
He spoke to himself for nearly half an hour, all about his grandson.
None of the three interrupted him.
He finally stopped on his own, and seemed to pull himself out of his emotional state just as quickly.
"You can’t go in there. You’re just kids, with your whole lives ahead of you! Don’t let curiosity make your parents bury their own child."
After saying his piece, the old man didn’t seem to wait for a reply and simply turned to leave.
But after just a few steps, he turned back around.
"If you kids accidentally get in there, and you see a dog, you must follow it, understand? It will protect you."
The old man shook his head and then truly left.
Little White and Kong Jian hadn’t been listening to the idle chat earlier, so they didn’t know about the dog. Hearing this, their interest was genuinely piqued.
"Big Sister, what kind of dog could protect them in the mist?"
Kong Jian shook his head. He didn’t think any dog could.
Little White was extremely curious. She wanted to meet that dog.
Wen Ying shook her head. She had a premonition about that dog but couldn’t quite put her finger on it.
Once Little White’s curiosity was sparked, there was no stopping it.
And so, with a look of resignation, Wen Ying began asking around about the dog.
This public inquiry naturally attracted some attention.
As a result, late that night, the three of them were taken away.
Upon learning Wen Ying’s identity, the leader working overtime immediately apologized. "Doctor Wen, I’m so sorry. We didn’t know who you were. We were worried about civilians wandering into the mist, so we..."
Wen Ying quickly replied that it was alright; she was just passing through by chance.
"Doctor Wen, are you here because of the mist?" As the overworked leader said this, his eyes seemed to sparkle with hope.
Doctor Wen’s power was known to all!
If she was here for this, then the matter of Ju City High School might just be resolved!
"I’m sorry, I’m just passing through."
The light in the man’s eyes died down, but he didn’t press the issue.
After all, no one could be one hundred percent certain they could enter and emerge unscathed.
Everyone’s life is their own. How could he force someone else into danger?
"I just want to know about the dog."
These words from Wen Ying made the leader, whose hope had just been extinguished, feel it flare up once more.
"That dog..."
