Chapter 222: Control! Chi Yao’s Investigation! Unknown Challenger!
"No! Don’t put it there!"
"Put it in! Put it in! With all your strength!"
"Idiot! Is this your first time?"
Three voices echoed, barely hidden by the sound of crashing waves.
Three women stood in front of a vast ocean.
Xiao Lingxi. Huo Ling’er. Chi Yao.
At the hands of each one was a fishing rod, the fishing line stretching into the sea.
From time to time, fish would appear and bite the bait at the end of the hook. However, just like the fish Chen Xuan had faced, they were not trapped.
Instead, they quickly swallowed the bait in a single motion before leaping back into the water, sending waves crashing toward them.
Their reactions were far from as quick as Chen Xuan’s.
Although the three women were able to defend themselves at first, as their attempts increased, they gradually failed to do so.
By the end, all three were soaked in seawater.
The sensation of their clothes clinging tightly to their bodies made them uncomfortable. More importantly, it made them furious.
The first to break was Huo Ling’er.
Glancing at Chi Yao, her oldest rival, she immediately began to yell.
"It’s all your fault! I told you to keep your fishing rod away! Look! You startled the fish!"
Under normal circumstances, Chi Yao would have remained silent even when faced with such words.
However, the content of those words—and more importantly, the person who had said them—made her anger flare up.
Could fish that were practically equivalent to beasts possibly be frightened by the movements of a fishing rod?
It was obvious that Huo Ling’er was looking for fault with her, trying to avenge their previous grievances!
This became even more obvious when Huo Ling’er noticed her anger.
She sneered.
"Hmph! So what if you’re angry? Now that Master is no longer here to favor you, do you think you can talk back to me?"
"Don’t forget! I was first! I’m the Senior Sister!"
Huo Ling’er’s words were sharp, and her expression was full of contempt.
It somewhat mirrored the attitude Cai Yu had displayed earlier, as though she had unknowingly learned from the Elder’s method of attracting hatred.
Chi Yao grumbled in response.
She ultimately swallowed her words and focused on the trial.
She stared at the fishing rod in her hands before shifting her gaze toward the lake not far away.
Although she was familiar with the Goddess of the Sea and her methods, it was impossible for her to know the exact trials that had been set up for the inheritance.
After all, even in her previous life, she had never personally experienced this place.
Fortunately, with her knowledge and vision, she was able to see through some of the clues.
The fishing trial was not actually about fishing.
Likewise, it was not a test of strength, Dao Heart, or even Laws.
What the fishing trial tested was control over one’s power!
Yes!
Through only a few attempts, Chi Yao had already discovered the secret of the trial.
’The fish are indeed smart enough to resist the fishing rod’s pulling force. However, there is a brief window.’
’Between the moment they bite the bait and the moment they escape, there is a millisecond when you can try to pull them in.’
’Sensing that window of opportunity is already difficult. Taking advantage of it is even more so.’
Chi Yao’s eyes narrowed.
Although cultivators possessed extraordinary strength, they were far from omnipotent.
Over the course of their lives, they had absorbed countless external energies in order to strengthen themselves, whether it was Spiritual Energy, medicinal pills, or other means.
Absorbing these energies appeared harmless, but it had severe side effects.
After all, how could a cultivator truly control foreign power perfectly?
Because of this, cultivators were unable to unleash one hundred percent of their strength.
They could exert their power. They could even control it to a certain degree.
But controlling every strand of power with absolute precision was almost impossible.
After one broke through to the Nascent Soul realm, things would improve considerably. The appearance of the Nascent Soul would let part of these external energies integrate into their soul.
Yet even then, it was nearly impossible to perfectly control one’s power unless the cultivator had specifically trained for it.
’This is an excellent trial.’
’For cultivators, being able to unleash their full strength is an extremely important matter.’
’Not only will doing so improve their combat prowess, but they will also need to accomplish this before they can break through to the Soul Transformation realm.’
Chi Yao nodded inwardly.
Her gaze subconsciously moved toward her two fellow disciples.
Immediately, she nearly burst into laughter.
Huo Ling’er’s control over her power was truly laughable.
Through a brief glance, Chi Yao could already see that she could barely exert twenty percent of her total strength.
’It’s no wonder this woman has always had mediocre combat prowess despite possessing so many advantages.’
’Although her foundation is solid, her control over that foundation is simply...’
Chi Yao shook her head.
She didn’t point out Huo Ling’er’s shortcomings.
For her, this was a good thing.
The less control Huo Ling’er had over her power, the less trouble she could cause for her.
Subsequently, her gaze then moved toward her new Junior Sister, Xiao Lingxi.
Chi Yao’s eyes couldn’t help but widen.
Originally, her high cultivation at such a young age had made Chi Yao assume that Xiao Lingxi’s control over her power would be similar to Huo Ling’er’s.
After all, to cultivate so quickly, one had to absorb a considerable number of cultivation pills and other resources.
Normally, such rapid growth would make it difficult to completely stabilize one’s foundation.
Yet the result was the exact opposite.
Xiao Lingxi’s control over her own power was actually quite good.
’At least eighty percent.’
Chi Yao narrowed her eyes, somewhat surprised.
It was already very rare for a Mortal World cultivator to control their strength to such an extent.
For a mere Core Formation cultivator, this was even more astonishing.
More importantly, Xiao Lingxi’s control didn’t seem to be the result of deliberate suppression.
It was natural.
Every movement was precise, and every strand of Spiritual Energy seemed to obey her thoughts.
This meant that she had not simply focused on cultivation for all these years.
She had spent some time learning how to control the power she possessed.
Upon seeing this, Chi Yao couldn’t help but sigh inwardly.
It seemed that her Master might have accepted one more outstanding disciple.
Although one’s lack of control over their power did not mean they lacked talent—Huo Ling’er was proof of that—a high degree of control over one’s strength was almost certainly a sign of extraordinary talent.
At the very least, Xiao Lingxi’s comprehension and cultivation talent were not low at all. Especially since it was obvious that she had done so subconsciously.
With that thought, Chi Yao took a deeper look at her new fellow disciple.
Her hand holding the fishing rod gradually relaxed.
She suddenly felt that there was no need to rush to complete the trial.
There was no time limit. Perhaps this was a good opportunity to observe her fellow disciples.
Not only Xiao Lingxi, but also Huo Ling’er.
’To be able to keep up with me, this woman must have some sort of secret.’
’What is it? A treasure? A powerful technique? Perhaps a special Physique?’
Her piercing gaze wandered between the two women.
Although she had already spent a considerable amount of time with Huo Ling’er, she still had not been able to completely understand the source of her extraordinary cultivation speed.
That woman was far too strange.
Her foundation was clearly unstable in certain aspects, yet her cultivation continued advancing at an astonishing pace.
There had to be something supporting her.
Chi Yao’s curiosity grew stronger.
However, she did not ask. There was no need.
If Huo Ling’er had wanted to tell her, she would have naturally done so long ago.
Since she hadn’t...
Then Chi Yao would simply observe.
After all, they still had plenty of time.
With her vision and knowledge, Chi Yao did not believe she would fail to find any clues.
--
Chen Xuan and his disciples were facing their own difficulties with completing the trials.
Yet what none of them, including Elder Cai Yu, knew was that there was a fifth person participating in the trials.
This person had not been separated from the others by the inheritance’s power.
Nor had they arrived here through the same method.
Instead, they had used a different method to enter than Chen Xuan and his disciples.
"Master, is this really the inheritance of a legendary Immortal?"
A young, arrogant voice echoed through the strange space.
The person standing before the mysterious trial ground looked around with curiosity, seemingly unable to conceal the excitement in his eyes.
"Don’t worry, Master."
"I will surely obtain the treasures here and help you reforge your body!"
"We’ve already paid a heavy price associating with those beasts. Now, it’s time to get the benefit of doing so."
The voice was calm and confident.
Yet beneath that confidence was a hidden anticipation, excitement... and greed.
Clearly, this person had not come here solely for the inheritance.
Recalling the voluptuous figure of his Master, the young man couldn’t help but let his mind wander.
