Chapter 432 - 283: Identity Exposed, Turning the Tables
A single sentence from Baili Xueyuan sent Lin Qi’s mind racing.
Lin Qi’s first thought was about what Baili Xueyuan actually meant by "Wizard."
’An Extraordinary Profession?’
’Or a codename for a Mercenary Corps?’
"How could that be? Are you joking?" Lin Qi shot back a question, a typical first reaction when a lie is exposed.
Lin Qi intentionally showed an opening.
Baili Xueyuan must have known something, but it was highly likely she bore him no ill will.
Since that was the case, Lin Qi decided to cut his losses immediately.
He would probe to find out what Baili Xueyuan knew, so he could continue to hide what she didn’t.
Baili Xueyuan’s expression was unreadable. Her sharp gaze fixed on Lin Qi’s eyes as she continued, "I suspected it when we first met. The Talents of the Wizard and Blood Robe Extraordinary Professions are hereditary. I didn’t have time to investigate in detail back then, so I couldn’t be sure. But now, I am certain you are a Wizard Professional."
After her simple explanation, Baili Xueyuan added, "You can relax. I have no ill will toward Wizard Professionals, especially since you’re Lin Xin’s brother."
Lin Qi breathed a small sigh of relief. Baili Xueyuan didn’t know much; she had only seen through his identity as a Wizard Professional.
’Thank goodness she doesn’t know about the internal affairs of the Highest-Level Mercenary Corps. If all my past activities in the Mercenary Corps were exposed, I’d probably have to die of social embarrassment for a while.’
Lin Qi was silent for a moment before deciding against any attempt to argue.
Against a top-tier Tier Four Powerhouse like Baili Xueyuan, Lin Qi’s arguments were meaningless.
She didn’t even need to provide proof. For someone of her Level, suspicion alone was enough.
Lin Qi asked directly, "I am indeed a Tier One Wizard, but how did you find out?"
’Admit I’m a Wizard Professional, but only admit to being Tier One. A strategic retreat to advance later!’
It seemed Baili Xueyuan really didn’t know Lin Qi’s specific Extraordinary Level. She began, "The process of confirming your identity wasn’t complicated. At first, it was just a suspicion, since Lin Xin’s Blood Robe Talent is very strong."
"But your full set of Prosthetic Bodies did fool me. It’s hard to suspect someone is a Wizard when they’re covered in them. No Wizard would ever install a full Prosthetic Body. So after leaving Red Fruit City, I dismissed my suspicions about you."
Hearing this, Lin Qi couldn’t help but grow curious. "When did you start suspecting me again?"
Baili Xueyuan smiled and said, "Today."
’Today?’
Lin Qi was even more surprised. ’What did I do today to arouse Baili Xueyuan’s suspicion?’
’The call with Lin Xin?’
’That shouldn’t be it. Everything I told Lin Xin was verifiable, all information that Liu Xuan could have investigated.’
Baili Xueyuan found Lin Qi’s expression quite interesting, but she didn’t tease him for long. She wasn’t interested in married men, especially not young ones, and certainly not her student’s brother.
Baili Xueyuan continued with her final explanation, "To be precise, it was after I arrived at the Prosthetic Clinic and saw a cured Abnormal."
’An Abnormal?’
Lin Qi was stunned for a moment before realizing that "Abnormal" must refer to the new type of cyber psychosis—someone affected by a Bearer.
’Brother Green Hair?’
’Baili Xueyuan became suspicious of me because of Brother Green Hair?’
Lin Qi couldn’t quite figure it out and could only listen patiently for Baili Xueyuan’s explanation.
"I discovered that this Abnormal had undergone a craniotomy, and his symptoms had completely vanished after the surgery. So I launched a more in-depth investigation."
"I examined the traces of the surgery and synced the information with a few colleagues. Based on the bone and skin incisions, they believed a portion of his brain tissue had been removed."
"However, upon inspection, I found that his brain tissue was still intact. Aside from the bone and skin, there was no sign of surgery at all."
"There’s only one explanation for this: he was treated with a healing-type Extraordinary method."
"Although many Extraordinary Professions could achieve a similar effect, my previous suspicions led me to a new theory."
"You are a Wizard, and an extremely powerful one with incredible Healing Ability. Someone who can rapidly heal and regenerate even brain tissue would naturally have no fear of installing a Prosthetic Body."
Baili Xueyuan laid out every detail of her deduction.
Lin Qi finally fell silent.
He never would have imagined that the reason for his exposure was so simple. All he did was be a good person and heal Brother Green Hair a little too thoroughly.
"So, you’re saying you don’t actually have any direct evidence that I’m a Wizard Professional?" Lin Qi asked after a moment of silence.
Baili Xueyuan nodded. "You are indeed cautious enough. I went through all the intelligence department’s files and found no trace of you ever using Extraordinary Power. Even with the internal healing of the Abnormal’s head, there’s no direct evidence it was you."
In the end, Baili Xueyuan had simply guessed.
If she weren’t Lin Xin’s teacher, and if Lin Xin’s Talent weren’t so strong, she would never have relied on such trivial details to deduce that Lin Qi was a Wizard Professional.
After hearing Baili Xueyuan’s words, Lin Qi once again searched for answers deep in his mind.
’Baili Xueyuan has no ill will, yet she exposed my identity...’
’What is her objective?’
’She must know why I’m hiding my identity.’
