Chapter 56: THE SHADOW OF GENEVA
The high-security subterranean briefing room inside the World Hunter Federation Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, was bathed in the harsh, red light of emergency beacons.
On the eighty-foot central holo-display, the tactical satellite telemetry from the Northern Pass was stuck on a loop. Five thousand elite international mercenaries, forty automated Class-S mana-artillery batteries, and an entire S-Rank command structure—reduced to gray ash and converted into spectral shadow soldiers in less than forty-five minutes.
The room was packed with over fifty diplomats, high-ranking generals, and guild executives from twenty different nations. The silence was deafening, broken only by the erratic breathing of panicked officials.
[World Hunter Federation Emergency Assessment]
Target: Sovereign Monarch ’Renan’
Incident Location: Northern Pass Provincial Corridor
Casualties: 5,000 Mercenaries (100% Loss Rate / Zero Survivors)
Target Asset Growth: Shadow Army Estimated at 9,500 Units
Current Threat Level: Global Extermination Calamity (Class-SS)
Director Arthur Vance stood at the head of the polished steel conference table, his hands trembling slightly as he held the paper report. His face was gray, aged by ten years in a single night.
"The Northern Pass blockade line... has been wiped off the map," Director Vance announced, his raspy voice amplified by the room’s acoustic arrays. "Commander Gregory Vance was extracted into a Rank-EX Shadow Entity. The five thousand mercenaries deployed by the North American Consortium have been integrated into Renan’s active army. His domain has officially expanded past the Capital Sector and into the Eastern Provincial Highways."
"This is impossible!" a high-ranking European Defense Minister yelled, slamming his fist onto the table. "Five thousand Rank-A and Rank-S Hunters! That was an army capable of clearing a Tier-SS Abyssal Gate! How did a single rogue Hunter dismantle them in less than an hour?!"
"Because he is no longer a Hunter," a deep, booming voice cut through the chaos.
The heavy steel doors at the back of the briefing room slid open. Walking into the room was a tall, imposing figure clad in pristine white-and-gold plate armor that radiated a dense, blinding aura of pure, holy mana. Every step he took left faint, scorched footprints on the reinforced floorboards.
General Viktor Vance—one of the world’s five recognized World-Class Hunters, known across the globe as the Sword of the Sovereign.
Beside Viktor walked a tall, slender woman in dark crimson robes, her eyes covered by a silk blindfold adorned with ancient runic scripts. She was Archmage Cassandra, an SS-Rank Prophet and World-Class Arcane Specialist who commanded the European Defense Legion’s strategic division.
"General Viktor!" Senator Miller stood up, relief washing over his face. "You saw the telemetry! We need the European Legion to deploy immediately! If we don’t mobilize the World-Class Hunters now, he will cross the ocean!"
General Viktor stopped at the edge of the holographic map, his cold silver eyes staring at the dark red zone covering Sector 1 through the Northern Pass.
"Deploying blindly into a Monarch’s active territory is suicide, Senator," Viktor said coldly. "You sent five thousand men into a choke point against an opponent who gains strength from every corpse he creates. You didn’t build a blockade... you delivered him an army."
Archmage Cassandra raised her silver staff, tapping its base lightly against the stone floor. A soft, shimmering blue wave of mana spread across the room, projecting a complex, three-dimensional astrological chart of the planet above the table.
"Look at the mana fault lines," Cassandra spoke, her voice calm and ethereal. "The execution of President James and the massacre at the Northern Pass have destabilized the tectonic mana grid beneath their nation. The energy density inside Sector 1 has reached a critical threshold."
"What does that mean?" Director Vance asked, leaning forward.
"It means the system is reacting to his evolution," Cassandra explained, gesturing to a massive, pulsating purple node glowing directly beneath the Capital Sector. "A National-Class Abyssal Rift—a Tier-EX Gate that has remained dormant for three thousand years—is about to undergo a forced dimensional break beneath the Association Tower foundation. Within seventy-two hours, millions of ancient abyssal beasts will flood the surface world."
The entire room gasped in horror. A single Tier-SS Gate break was enough to erase a small country from the map. A National-Class Tier-EX Dungeon Break would destroy the entire continent’s ecosystem.
"Then he is finished!" Senator Miller blurted out, a sick grin appearing on his face. "He’ll be crushed between the abyssal monsters and our blockades! We don’t even have to fight him—let the dungeon break tear his shadow legion to pieces!"
General Viktor turned his gaze toward Miller, his silver eyes flashing with sharp contempt.
"You fool," Viktor growled softly. "Did you forget what his skill is? He absorbs everything. If those ancient abyssal beasts flood the surface... he will not die. He will extract every single one of them."
Viktor drew his glowing, rune-inscribed broadsword, resting its tip against the floor. The physical pressure radiating from his body forced several diplomats in the front row to lean back in their chairs.
"If he absorbs a National-Class Abyssal Rift, his stat total will cross thirty thousand points," Viktor declared, his voice echoing through the subterranean room. "At that level, no army on Earth will be able to stop him. He will become an undisputed God of War."
Director Vance swallowed hard, adjusting his glasses. "What are your orders, General?"
"Authorize the deployment of the Global Vanguard Coalition," Viktor commanded. "I will personally lead two hundred SS-Rank Hunters and three World-Class Champions to the Eastern Provincial Border. We will not wait for him to clear the Rift."
Viktor’s eyes burned with cold, lethal resolve as he stared at the holographic image of Renan.
"We will enter the Capital Sector while the Rift breaks... and execute the Ominous Sovereign in the middle of the chaos."
Meanwhile, atop the ruined glass dome of the Association Tower in Sector 1, Renan sat on a massive stone throne forged from black shadow mana.
The morning sun cast long, crimson shadows across the quiet Capital City. Below his throne, the nine thousand five hundred units of his Shadow Legion stood in absolute, silent formation—stretching for miles across the deserted avenues and central plazas.
Beside his throne, Shadow Commander James held a glowing projection showing the real-time encrypted communications intercepted from Geneva.
"Master," James reported, bowing his head. "Archmage Cassandra has detected the dimensional instability beneath our subterranean vault. The World Hunter Federation believes the dormant Tier-EX Abyssal Rift will break within seventy-two hours. General Viktor Vance is mobilizing the Global Vanguard Coalition to attack us during the Dungeon Break."
Renan rested his chin on his gloved hand, a cold, ruthless smile appearing on his face as he looked out over his glowing army.
"Seventy-two hours?" Renan murmured, his layered voice echoing across the rooftop. "They think we are waiting for the gate to open on its own."
Renan stood up from his shadow throne, his dark coat fluttering wildly in the cool morning wind as he extended his palm down toward the subterranean vault beneath the tower.
"Ignis. Sylas. Prepare the legion," Renan commanded, his golden eyes burning with absolute Monarch authority. "We are not waiting three days. We are breaking the seal today."
