Chapter 53: MOBILIZATION AT THE NORTHERN PASS
The Northern Pass—a jagged, two-mile-wide mountain canyon carving through the steep granite cliffs separating the Capital Sector from the eastern agricultural provinces—had been transformed into a cold, high-tech fortress of steel and mana-shields in less than twenty-four hours.
Massive tungsten-reinforced barrier towers, each eighty feet tall and humming with high-density anti-mana fields, stood lined across the mouth of the gorge. Behind the glowing blue energy fields stood five thousand elite mercenary Hunters deployed by the North American Hunter Defense Committee and European Security Forces. Modern tactical artillery batteries, enchanted ballistas, and automated Class-S turret emplacements pointed their barrels westward—directly toward the silent, darkened silhouette of the Capital City.
Inside the primary tactical command tent erected atop a rocky ridge overlooking the canyon floor, Commander Gregory Vance—a veteran S-Rank Heavy Tanker from the American Consortium—stared at a bank of live radar monitors. Beside him stood Vice-Commander Charlotte, an S-Rank Arcane Elementalist clad in silver-embroidered robes, her glowing staff resting against her shoulder.
"Current mana readings along the western perimeter?" Commander Gregory asked, his heavy, gravelly voice cutting through the hum of communication consoles.
"Completely dead, Commander," a technician replied, tapping furiously at his terminal. "Ever since the broadcast twenty-four hours ago, there has been zero movement from Sector 1. No troop movements, no scouting parties, no mana signatures along the outer highway."
"It’s too quiet," Vice-Commander Charlotte murmured, her sharp eyes scanning the high-definition thermal feeds of the mountain ridges. "A rogue entity that annihilated the Association Headquarters in a single night doesn’t just sit idle inside his borders. He knows we’re building a blockade."
"Let him know," Gregory sneered, adjusting the heavy adamantite gauntlets on his forearms. "The barrier towers ringing this gorge are emitting a Class-SS Disruptor Field. Even an S-Rank Speedster would have their mana flow choked to thirty percent the moment they step within two miles of this perimeter. We have five thousand Rank-A and Rank-S mercenaries holding this choke point, backed by forty automated mana-artillery batteries. If this ’Ominous Sovereign’ tries to force his way through the Northern Pass, we’ll turn his shadow legion into vapor before they even see our front lines."
"Commander!" a radar operator suddenly yelled, his voice rising in pitch. "Sensors just registered a massive atmospheric pressure drop along the western ridge! Mana density spiking rapidly!"
Gregory and Charlotte bolted toward the main glass viewport overlooking the canyon.
Out in the open, two miles down the deserted highway leading to Sector 1, the night sky violently darkened. The pale moonlight was swallowed by a thick, rolling tide of pitch-black miasma that crept over the mountain ridges like an ink-black tsunami. The ambient temperature inside the canyon plummeted by thirty degrees in seconds, causing frost to bloom rapidly across the metal frames of the barrier towers.
THUMP. THUMP. THUMP.
A heavy, rhythmic pounding resonated through the granite canyon walls—not the sound of boots, but the terrifying collective footfalls of thousands of massive, clawed beasts galloping through the dark fog.
"Red Alert! All units to battle stations!" Gregory roared into his comms, his voice echoing across the entire five-thousand-man encampment. "Charge the barrier towers to maximum output! Elementalist squads, prepare heavy fire barrage!"
Across the defensive lines, thousands of mercenaries raised their glowing weapons. Heavy plasma cannons hummed to life, archers drew enchanted bowstrings, and elemental mages chanted destructive spell formulas, casting a blinding kaleidoscope of multi-colored light across the dark canyon floor.
Through the thick curtain of black miasma stepping out onto the asphalt highway came three towering spectral figures: Shadow General Ignis, its dragon-fire broadsword ignited in brilliant black flames; Shadow Commander Sylas, holding twin daggers dripping with void energy; and Shadow Commander Beatrice, floating silently three feet above the ground surrounded by howling gales of dark wind.
Behind them emerged two thousand newly extracted Abyssal Shadow Beasts—colossal, bone-armored wolves and three-headed chimeras whose golden eyes burned through the dark fog like thousands of predatory embers.
"Look at those numbers..." Vice-Commander Charlotte whispered, her face draining of color as she watched the radar screen fill with thousands of high-density energy dots. "Where did he get those beasts? Those aren’t human Hunters... those are ancient abyssal monsters!"
"Fire! Fire everything!" Gregory screamed through the tactical communications channel.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
Forty automated Class-S mana-artillery batteries detonated simultaneously, raining a devastating volley of high-explosive arc shells and concentrated plasma beams onto the advancing shadow horde. Explosions ripped through the highway, shattering asphalt and throwing up massive plumes of fire and rock.
However, as the smoke cleared, the mercenaries watching through their tactical visors gasped in absolute terror.
Shadow Commander Beatrice stepped forward, raising her spectral hands toward the sky.
[Skill Activated: ’Ominous Gale Aegis’ (Tier-EX)]
Target Area: Northern Pass Canyon Floor
Effect: Creates a High-Velocity Vacuum Barrier (100% Kinetic/Magical Redirection)
SWIRL!
A massive, hundred-foot-tall hurricane of pressurized black wind erupted in front of the shadow army. The incoming plasma shells and magic artillery rounds struck the swirling gale barrier, only to be violently redirected upward, detonating harmlessly against the high granite canyon walls and causing massive rockslides that buried the surrounding mountain paths.
"They didn’t come to break through the front lines, Commander," Charlotte realized, her voice trembling violently as she looked at the tactical map. "Look at the flanks! The ridges! They’ve already surrounded us!"
Above the canyon walls, standing atop the jagged granite cliffs overlooking the five-thousand-man mercenary camp, three thousand five hundred dark, armored Shadow Knights materialized from the shadows cast by the rocks. Flanking them were Shadow Commander Jonathan, holding his massive phantom war-hammer, and Shadow Commander Ronald, his hands crackling with dark arcane circles.
The entire international force of five thousand mercenaries was trapped inside the narrow gorge—completely encircled from above and below.
Then, stepping out from the center of the dark fog on the main highway, a single figure in a long black coat walked calmly toward the glowing blue barrier towers.
Renan stopped fifty paces from the energy field, his glowing golden eyes locking directly onto Commander Gregory standing inside the high-tech command bunker atop the ridge.
"You built a cage at my doorstep," Renan’s layered, double-toned voice reverberated through the granite canyon, overpowering the sound of sirens and roaring engines. "Did you truly believe these metal toys would keep out the Sovereign?"
Renan raised his gloved hand, pointing his index finger directly at the central anti-mana barrier tower.
"Ignis. Tear down their wall."
