Chapter 216: The Deep Forge
The ancient stronghold had been built to survive enemies coming from the mine.
Its first gate stood at the end of a bridge carved from the cavern wall. The bridge crossed a narrow arm of the underground lake before reaching two squat towers. Dwarven firing positions looked down from both sides, and the stone approach offered no cover that had not been deliberately placed there by the defenders.
Helmar’s people had restored the gate.
Fresh metal reinforced ancient doors. Lamps burned inside the towers, and movement crossed the firing slits. Behind the gate, higher structures climbed along the lake’s edge until darkness swallowed their upper walls.
Rod stopped before the bridge.
The freed slaves and their escorts continued toward the surface while Rod’s reinforced group prepared to cross the bridge. Twenty people remained with Rod’s party and Renn. Several carried injuries from the lower work areas, and their supplies had already fallen below what they brought from the surface.
Dirk studied the towers. "Six firing positions I can see. More behind the gate."
"The bridge?" Dain asked.
One ward specialist knelt beside the first stone. "Ancient anchors beneath it. New activation lines along the edges."
Renn examined the worn Ruskell mark above the gate. "Helmar knew this was here."
No one answered. The years of hidden purchases and dead slaves answered for them.
A voice carried across the water from the nearest tower.
"Renn Ruskell, you have led enough people to their deaths. Do not take another step onto that bridge."
Brogan appeared behind one of the firing slits. He had discarded his family colors but still wore the armor Midnight had seen inside the ancestral stronghold.
Renn moved where Brogan could see him clearly. "Blackwater Reach has fallen, and the council has removed Helmar as head of our family. Surrender now, and the council can decide what punishment your crimes deserve."
"The council’s authority means nothing down here." Brogan called back. "Helmar reclaimed this stronghold after generations of neglect. Neither you nor the council has the right to take it from him."
"He murdered members of his own family and worked hundreds of slaves to death because he wanted what was buried here. Whatever claim he once possessed ended with those crimes."
"Helmar restored what weaker dwarves abandoned. If you understood what lies inside this stronghold, you would not be standing beside outsiders who intend to steal it."
"I understand that Helmar still needs the ring." Renn said. "He would not have spent years hunting my family if he already possessed whatever this key unlocks."
Brogan remained behind the firing slit. "You are carrying something you do not understand. Give me the ring, and the captives still inside the stronghold will be released."
Renn’s hand moved toward the protected box beneath his armor before he stopped himself.
Brogan’s gaze followed the movement.
Rod stepped closer to Renn. "He was not trying to persuade you. He wanted confirmation that you still had the ring."
Brogan disappeared from the firing slit.
"Shields!" Rod shouted.
Heavy bolts crossed the water a moment later. Valewick raised a barrier across the entrance to the bridge. Two bolts shattered against its surface, while a third drove partway through the spell and stopped with its metal head suspended inches from Dain’s shield.
Valewick stared at the embedded bolt. "Those launchers strike with considerably more force than the weapons we faced on the surface. My barrier will not withstand many direct hits."
"Angle the next barrier so it redirects the bolts instead of absorbing their full force." Lana said. "We need to keep moving before they overwhelm it."
Valewick reshaped the spell while Dain and the other shield bearers formed overlapping rows behind it. The barrier tilted toward the water, causing the next volley to glance away from the group rather than striking it head-on.
They advanced onto the bridge.
Ancient runes ignited beneath their feet. Stone ground against stone, and an entire section of the bridge began tilting toward the underground lake.
The ward specialists had expected a trap. One drove a stabilizing spike into the nearest rune while the other disrupted the newer control line. The bridge stopped at an angle steep enough to make every step difficult.
Dirk fired through the barrier whenever a slit opened. He did not attempt to defeat every defender. He forced them away from their launchers long enough for the front line to advance.
Halfway across, the stronghold gate opened.
Eight of Helmar’s elite guards charged beneath heavy shields. They struck Rod’s formation while the tilted bridge denied both sides stable footing.
Dain met the first shield with his own. The collision pushed him backward, boots scraping across stone. Rod stepped beside him and hooked his axe over the enemy shield’s edge. Together they tore it aside.
Lana sent ice across the defenders’ half of the bridge. Two guards fell. Valewick began shaping a precise wall intended to divide the remaining six, then saw one charging toward an injured ward specialist.
He released the spell early.
The wall formed crookedly. Its lower edge shattered against uneven stone, but the upper section struck the guard and threw him over the bridge rail.
The dwarf disappeared into the lake.
The remaining defenders retreated through the gate. Rod’s group followed before it could close.
Inside, the stronghold divided into narrow streets and ascending platforms. Helmar’s engineers had restored only the lowest routes. Lamps revealed stone buildings whose doors remained sealed beneath mineral deposits. Rail lines emerged from the mine entrance and continued toward a central structure overlooking the water.
Renn stopped at an inscription carved into a support column.
"Protected production." He translated. "Authorized blood. Continuity of the line."
"Does it say what they produced?" Nessa asked.
"No."
Another inscription named the Ruskells as custodians rather than owners. Renn had never seen the title in his family’s surviving records.
Helmar’s guards attacked from the upper streets.
They used the ancient structure better than the pursuers. Hidden stairs allowed them to change elevation, while restored lifts moved small groups behind barricades. Rod advanced slowly enough to avoid being drawn apart.
One adventurer died when a stone door opened beside him and a spear slipped beneath his armor. Another fell from an upper walkway after a spell shattered the railing. Both would revive at Blackwater’s graveyard, but returning to the stronghold would require them to travel through the entire captured mine again. They would not rejoin the pursuit for several hours.
Dirk watched Helmar’s guards retreat toward another prepared position. "They are not trying to defeat the entire group. Every ambush kills one or two people before they abandon the position. They know that anyone they kill will be removed from the pursuit long enough to matter."
"Then we cannot continue advancing exactly where they expect us to," Rod said. "If we charge into every defensive position, Helmar will keep reducing our numbers until too few of us remain to stop him."
"We also cannot leave the stronghold entrance unguarded," Dain said. "Anyone who slips around us could attack the freed slaves or close the gate behind us."
Rod selected five supporting adventurers to remain at the entrance. "Hold this position and protect the route back to Area Nine. Do not pursue anyone into the stronghold. Your purpose is to keep our escape route open and prevent Helmar’s guards from reaching the captives."
The order left Rod’s party, Renn, Valewick, the two ward specialists, and four additional fighters to continue the pursuit. The smaller force could remain close together inside the narrow streets, while the people at the gate protected them from an attack against their rear.
Dirk studied the surrounding buildings before pointing toward a sealed workshop. "Helmar’s people keep disappearing from one level and attacking us from another. There must be stairs or lifts concealed inside these structures."
He examined the dust along the workshop wall and found a narrow line where a stone panel had moved recently. Behind it, a concealed stair climbed above the next barricade.
"I can take a small group through here and get behind the defenders." Dirk said. "If Dain keeps their attention below, they should not notice us until we are already above them."
Rod considered the route before nodding. "Take Lana and me with you. Everyone else will hold this position until we open the barricade from the other side."
Dain raised his shield and moved toward the center of the street. "We will make enough noise to ensure they keep watching us."
Dirk led Rod and Lana into the concealed stair while Dain and the remaining fighters maintained pressure on the defenders below.
Their attack collapsed the position without another death.
Helmar continued withdrawing toward the central structure.
Renn saw signs of how far the excavation had progressed. Crates of replacement components stood beside mechanisms whose original pieces had corroded. Modern cables had been connected to ancient control plates. Several repair attempts ended in melted metal or blackened stone.
"He did not understand all of this." Renn said.
"He understood enough to keep trying." Lana replied.
A vibration passed through the floor.
The ring beneath Renn’s armor warmed.
He stopped and pressed a hand against the box. "It reacted."
Rod looked toward the building ahead. "Then that is where he wants you."
They found Brogan in a circular chamber containing three restored lifts. Two descended toward the lake. The third climbed into darkness. Helmar’s right-hand man waited with twelve guards.
"The ring belongs here." Brogan said.
"Then tell me what it opens." Renn replied.
"The future Helmar preserved while your father hid behind cowardice."
Brogan attacked before Renn could ask again.
His guards concentrated upon Rod and Dain, opening a path toward Renn. Dirk killed the first man through it. A second reached Renn and struck Korran’s chosen guard hard enough to break his shoulder.
Renn fought with a borrowed axe. He lacked Rod’s skill but did not freeze. The blade caught the guard’s weapon and held it until Lana’s lightning dropped the man.
Brogan drove Rod away from the center with a sequence of hammer strikes. He was not stronger than Rod, but he knew the chamber and used the lift housings to limit the axe.
Valewick raised a barrier behind Renn.
An ancient lift activated beneath it.
The platform rose, carrying the barrier and young mage toward the ceiling. Valewick released the spell before it crushed him and jumped to the chamber floor.
The distraction lasted seconds.
Helmar emerged from the upper passage with four guards.
His artificial hand closed around Renn’s wrist. The metal fingers locked before Renn could pull away. Helmar twisted, forcing Renn to drop the axe.
"The ring." Helmar said.
Renn struck him with his free hand. Helmar took the blow and tore open the front of Renn’s armor. The protected box hung from a chain beneath it.
Rod saw them and tried to disengage from Brogan.
Brogan accepted Rod’s axe across his armor to stop him. The blade split metal and entered his side, but his hammer caught Rod’s leg and brought him down.
Helmar ripped the chain free.
Renn grabbed for the box. Helmar’s artificial hand tightened around his wrist until bone cracked. Renn lost his grip.
Helmar retreated into the upper passage with the ring.
Two of his guards followed. The others remained to delay pursuit.
Brogan sank against a lift housing, blood spreading beneath his armor. Rod pushed himself upright and approached him.
"Where does the passage go?" Rod asked.
Brogan laughed through clenched teeth. "It leads to the reason all of you are already too late."
Renn knelt beside his injured arm while Nessa examined it. "What is he opening?"
Brogan looked at him with something close to pity. "A Deep Forge. The greatest inheritance your family ever possessed, buried because weak men feared what it could create."
The term silenced every dwarf who heard it.
Renn knew the legends. Deep Forges belonged to an age when dwarven strongholds produced materials modern craftsmen could barely shape. The greatest of them could create the precious metal found only in royal relics and artifacts whose makers had been dead for generations.
"That is his ultimate power." Renn said.
Brogan’s smile widened. "That is the beginning of it."
Rod stepped past him. Brogan reached for a concealed blade. Dirk’s arrow pinned his hand to the floor.
Nessa wrapped Renn’s injured wrist in a rigid brace and tightened the bindings until the fractured bones could no longer shift. "This will protect your wrist, but it will not let you use that hand in a fight. You should return to the surface before the injury becomes worse."
"Helmar has the key because he took it from me." Renn said. "The inscriptions throughout this stronghold refer to authorized blood and the continuation of the Ruskell line. I may be the only person here who can interfere with whatever he is trying to do."
"You do not know that." Nessa said. "You still do not understand what the key opens or how this place determines who possesses authority."
"That uncertainty is exactly why I cannot leave. If my presence has even a chance of preventing Helmar from gaining control of this place, I need to continue."
Nessa examined the brace once more. "You can walk, and the injury is not immediately life-threatening. Stay behind the front line, do not use that hand, and tell me if you lose feeling in your fingers."
"I will follow every restriction you give me." Renn said. "But I am not returning to the surface while Helmar carries my family’s key deeper into the stronghold."
Rod did not challenge the decision. Helmar had spent years preparing to reach the chamber ahead, while Renn had already seen the stronghold react to his bloodline. None of them knew whether Renn could take control away from Helmar, but leaving him behind could surrender their only chance to do so.
They left Brogan guarded by the surviving adventurers and followed the upper passage.
The stone grew warmer with every step. Ancient lamps ignited ahead of them without being touched. The vibration beneath the floor deepened into the rhythm of enormous machinery beginning to move.
At the end of the passage, two doors covered in ancient script stood open.
Beyond them, fire returned to the Deep Forge.
The heat reached the passage seconds later. Dust lifted from the floor as ancient ventilation channels opened throughout the stronghold. Somewhere above, sealed mechanisms began moving behind stone walls. Renn heard water gates shifting beneath the sound of the furnaces.
Helmar had not merely opened a room. He had awakened a system built into the entire underground settlement.
Dirk counted the remaining people. Rod’s party, Renn, Valewick, two ward specialists, and three supporting adventurers could still fight effectively. Everyone else guarded Brogan, protected the stronghold gate, or escorted slaves upward. Helmar had lost most of his own force for the same reason: every defended passage consumed people he could not recover.
The final confrontation would not belong to either army. It would belong entirely to whoever reached the last door.
