Chapter 99: The Last Threshold
The tracker secured the iron clamps. The mage fixed the stone band to its anchors. On the other side of the throne-room doors, the first undead reached the hall.
The doors shook but remained closed.
Kildra descended the steps of his throne.
[Kildra, Warden of the Last Threshold]
"What do you seek beyond me?" he asked.
Matthew had expected a threat. The question made him hesitate.
"The next level."
Black fire moved along Kildra’s armor. "Then prove you can survive the road to it."
Golden Axe formed up in front of the Warden.
The shield-bearer took the center. Matthew stood to his right, the tracker to his left. The mage and healer remained far enough apart that one attack could not reach both. They had practiced those positions until returning to them felt more natural than standing alone.
The undead courtiers watched from between the pillars. They carried no weapons and made no move toward the party. Matthew remembered them from the first attempt. They were witnesses, not reinforcements. Spending attention on them would only give Kildra the opening he wanted.
Behind Golden Axe, the tracker locked both clamps across the inner door handles. The mage drove her prepared anchors into existing cracks rather than creating new holes. Every motion had been rehearsed. The bracing consumed seconds instead of a spell large enough to empty her reserves.
The first impact struck the doors as she returned to position.
The mage cast first.
Her spell was small, bright, and aimed directly at Kildra’s chest. Black fire rose before it arrived and swallowed the magic.
She had expected that.
While the flame gathered in front of Kildra, a second spell settled across the floor behind him. Thin strands anchored themselves between two pillars without touching his armor. The black fire ignored them.
Kildra struck the shield.
The first impact tested the shield-bearer’s stance. The second carried enough force to move him. Instead of resisting until his boots left the floor, he turned the reinforced edge and allowed the blow to drive him toward the nearest pillar.
Kildra followed the movement he expected.
Matthew attacked the space the Warden exposed.
His spear scraped beneath one shoulder plate. The wound released black flame instead of blood, but this time Matthew withdrew before the fire reached the shaft.
The tracker struck the same seam from the opposite side.
Kildra turned, crossed the mage’s hidden strands, and pulled them taut around one armored leg. The binding did not hold him for long. It interrupted a single step.
Golden Axe used that step.
The shield-bearer returned to the center. The healer repaired the damage spreading through his arm. Matthew changed sides while the mage fixed another spell to the room instead of the Warden.
The throne-room doors shook again. One stone anchor cracked.
Kildra’s blade struck the shield low, then changed direction toward Matthew. The guild master caught the blow on the haft of his spear. Kildra’s blade carved a deep notch into the wood below the spearhead. The tracker drove an arrow into the joint behind Kildra’s knee. Black fire consumed the shaft but did not remove the damage beneath it.
The Warden stepped back for the first time. Then Kildra answered by striking the floor.
A dark pulse traveled through the stone. Golden Axe had seen it only after driving him below half health in the arena. Here, he used a weaker version earlier to test their balance. The shield-bearer took the force through his bent knees. Matthew planted the rear of his spear. The mage allowed one anchor spell to break rather than trying to preserve every piece of magic in the room.
No one fell.
Kildra’s empty gaze turned toward the mage. He had learned which member adapted the battlefield, just as Golden Axe had learned how his fire moved.
Golden Axe did not pursue recklessly. They tightened the formation and forced Kildra to approach through the space prepared for him.
The first stone anchor tore free. The doors opened a hand’s width before the remaining clamp caught. Armored fingers reached through the gap. The tracker fired into them, and the mage thickened the stone band without turning her back on Kildra.
"Thirty seconds." She said. It was not a promise. It was her best estimate.
Kildra raised one hand. Black fire streamed toward the doors.
The party had seen that choice in the arena. They knew what followed.
The weakened barrier broke. The doors opened, and the first grave knight forced its way through. Black fire touched the cracks in its armor. The undead warrior straightened as darkness filled every damaged plate.
At the same moment, the fire around Kildra’s raised arm thinned.
Matthew and the tracker attacked the exposed side together.
The tracker buried an arrow beneath the arm. Matthew drove his spear into the shoulder seam and twisted. A plate tore free. Black fire burst from the opening, but the mage redirected her floor binding and caught the flame between two anchored lines.
She could not control it so she changed where it spread.
The fire scorched a pillar instead of the healer.
The shield-bearer met the empowered grave knight before it reached the rear line. He could not hold both it and Kildra. He did not try. He guided the knight between two pillars, using the narrow space to prevent it from circling him.
The healer moved with him and kept the wounded leg beneath him.
More undead pressed against the doors. The remaining clamp bent but held them to a narrow entrance. The tracker abandoned his bow and used a short blade to keep grasping hands from widening the gap.
Golden Axe fought on two fronts without allowing either to become separate.
When the grave knight drove the shield-bearer backward, it entered the mage’s binding. When Kildra turned toward the mage, Matthew forced him to defend the damaged shoulder. When the healer moved to preserve the shield-bearer, the tracker took her place beside the doorway.
Their preparation did not make the battle clean. It made their losses of position temporary.
Kildra’s health crossed the halfway mark.
Every strand of black fire in the room snapped back toward him.
The grave knight slowed as the power left its armor. The flames wrapped Kildra so closely that the missing shoulder plate disappeared beneath them.
Golden Axe used the single change they received.
The shield-bearer drove the slowed grave knight into the half-open doors. The tracker cut the weakened strap at its knee, and the mage released the damaged stone band. The doors closed on the fallen knight while the remaining undead pushed from the other side. The clamp bent around its armor and trapped it across the threshold.
The blockage would not last. It removed the grave knight from the center long enough for all five adventurers to face Kildra’s final form.
Then the Warden moved.
His first strike broke the shield-bearer’s reinforced edge. The second drove him into a pillar. Kildra crossed the room before Matthew could intercept and brought his weapon down on the mage’s barrier. Stone and magic shattered together.
The arena had shown Golden Axe this change.
The real version was faster.
The mage fell beneath the force of the broken barrier. The healer reached her before Kildra could finish the attack. Matthew struck the Warden’s exposed back and lost the head of his spear when black fire closed around it.
The healer used one of the strong spells she had counted outside the room. Light spread through the mage’s chest and restored her breath, but the effort left the healer with almost nothing. She dragged the mage behind a pillar before Kildra turned.
Kildra turned toward him. Matthew gave ground with only the broken shaft in his hands.
The tracker threw his short blade. It did not damage the Warden. It struck the stone beside his head and drew his attention for the fraction of a second Matthew needed.
The shield-bearer returned without half his shield.
He caught Kildra’s next blow on the remaining section. The impact forced him to one knee, but it placed the Warden exactly where they needed him.
"Now." Matthew said.
The mage pressed both hands against the floor.
She had spent the battle fixing small spells to pillars, stones, and cracks throughout the room. None had been aimed at Kildra. Together, they formed a loose web around the space where he stood.
The web tightened.
Black fire rushed to consume the magic. It spread away from Kildra’s body along a dozen anchored lines, tearing through them one after another. The spell would last only seconds. It did not need to hold the Warden. It needed to pull his defense outward.
The damaged shoulder appeared.
The tracker abandoned the failing doorway. The undead trapped there pushed the grave knight’s body forward, but the remaining clamp held for one more breath. He spent that breath reaching Matthew.
Matthew reversed the broken spear and drove the metal-capped end into the open joint.
Kildra seized the shaft.
The tracker recovered his blade and struck the Warden’s hand. The shield-bearer used the remains of his shield to force the arm higher. The healer placed her final strengthening spell on Matthew without exposing it to the black fire.
Matthew pushed.
The broken spear entered the hollow beneath Kildra’s armor.
The mage’s web failed.
Black fire collapsed inward.
For a moment, it covered Golden Axe and the Warden together.
Then the flames went out.
Kildra remained standing. His hand closed around the spear shaft, and his empty eye sockets faced Matthew from less than a foot away.
The throne-room doors finally tore free behind them.
The undead in the hall stopped.
Kildra released the spear. Cracks of pale light spread across his armor.
"Worthy."
The Warden collapsed into black ash.
Every remaining undead lowered its weapon.
[Kildra, Warden of the Last Threshold, defeated.]
[Dread Fort completed.]
[First clear recorded.]
[Party: Golden Axe.]
The shield-bearer sank against a pillar. The mage lay on the floor, conscious but unable to stand. The healer had no spells remaining. Blood covered the tracker’s shoulder and Matthew held half a spear.
All five were alive.
The black throne dissolved.
The pillars followed it. Walls became gray mist, then open air. The stone beneath Golden Axe changed to trampled grass.
The party’s wounds closed. Their armor restored itself. Mana returned in a sudden rush that forced the mage to draw a startled breath.
The restoration did not carry them to the Sanctuary hospital. Something strange was happening. Wind moved across an enormous field and the Golden Axe party of five found themselves standing in the center of an army.
