Chapter 88: The Hall Remembers

The Hall of Achievements never shouted when a record changed.

It did not need to. Someone always noticed.

The building had developed its own morning routine. Adventurers checked the main records before buying breakfast. Skyyard crews inspected race times and blamed wind conditions that did not vary. Academy students searched for their names beneath magical achievements. People who claimed not to care walked through slowly enough to read every panel.

The Hall rewarded first clears and fastest victories, but those were only its most respectable entries. Other sections tracked the weakest successful attack, the greatest number of deaths to one creature, the longest argument before opening an unlocked door, and achievements so specific that nobody understood why the dungeon had measured them until a name appeared.

Max had approved the categories.

The Hall chose when to reveal them.

By breakfast, a crowd had gathered around the section devoted to Dread Fort. The level still lacked a first-clear display, but smaller inscriptions had appeared beneath the image of its distant walls.

{FIRST ENTRY INTO THE OUTER WARD: GOLDEN AXE}

{LONGEST TIME CONCEALED BENEATH CORPSES: 18 MINUTES, 42 SECONDS}

{FIRST PARTY TO RECEIVE KILDRA’S PERSONAL ATTENTION: GOLDEN AXE}

{BANNERS DESTROYED DURING A FAILED ATTEMPT: 1}

Matthew stood before the last record with both arms crossed.

"That does not sound like an achievement."

"You are the only party who has done it." Tessa pointed out.

"That makes it a statistic."

"The Hall of Achievement seems to disagree with you.."

A betting pool had already formed over which party would appear next. One wager predicted the first successful entry into the inner ward. Another predicted the first person to be thrown from one of the towers. A third offered terrible odds on someone stealing Kildra’s crown.

Matthew did not join.

The Masquerade Castle section attracted an even larger crowd.

Images from the first Grand Masquerade moved across its display. Gnome waiters carried trays beneath chandeliers. Masked participants slipped through concealed doors. The enormous portrait rotated sideways while five warriors forced it through the castle entrance.

The records beneath it had produced several arguments.

{FIRST PERFECT SILVER CONTRACT: Brakka Flintcloud, Doff, Pell, Mira Vale, Garrick Vale}

{LARGEST SUCCESSFULLY EXTRACTED TARGET: PORTRAIT OF KING OTHMAR, 417 POUNDS}

{MOST ARRESTS IN ONE EVENT: 6}

{MOST KEYS STOLEN WITHOUT FINDING A USEFUL KEY: 11}

{FIRST SUCCESSFUL EXTRACTION OF THE WRONG TARGET: NO SUCCESS AWARDED}

The team responsible for the final record had submitted a complaint. The complaint office rejected it because the words successful extraction did not mean successful contract.

Max visited the Hall with Anna after breakfast. They moved slowly through the crowd, listening to participants defend questionable decisions.

Garrick stood beneath the image of the Thornwood Reliquary. He did not care that his team held the first Silver perfect success. He cared that the display showed his replica from three angles.

"They should show the correct side." He complained.

Mira stood beside him wearing the decorative wooden token their team had received. "It was good enough to fool Lady Varene."

"For twelve minutes."

"We only needed nine to make our escape."

Brakka had already registered the team for the next Grand Masquerade. Garrick claimed he had not agreed. Doff possessed a registration slip proving otherwise.

Max left them to resolve that mystery.

Lady Varene stood a short distance away in an ordinary green dress instead of her masquerade gown. She remained one of the human inhabitants Max had purchased for the castle. Outside the weekly event, she could visit the Hall and Sanctuary like the other court residents.

Mira recognized her first.

"Did you know we switched the boxes?"

Varene studied the rotating image. "I knew someone wanted me to show you the reliquary. I did not know which person would attempt the exchange."

Garrick pointed to the display. "The replica was exact on the side she saw."

"The varnish was three weeks too fresh." Varene said.

Garrick’s expression changed.

"You noticed?"

"After twelve minutes."

Mira smiled. "We only needed nine."

Varene returned the smile. "That remains an excellent answer. It will not work twice."

Brakka accepted the warning as a challenge. Garrick accepted it as a reason to investigate older varnishes.

The civil-achievement display occupied a smaller wall near the complaint office. Davin Holt already held the distinction of being the first person sentenced to the Orc work camp. During the night, another line had appeared beneath his picture.

{FIRST VOLUNTARY PAID SHIFT AFTER COMPLETING COMPULSORY LABOR: 1 DAY}

The image showed him pointing at a crooked culvert while an Orc held the timber from the wrong end.

He had visited the Hall before beginning his paid shift. According to the complaint clerk, he objected to the picture, the wording, and the fact that the Orc Chief had been given a more flattering angle.

The complaint had been recorded. The achievement remained.

Hizon waited near the Defense Dungeon display.

The red hobgoblin wore his usual dark coat, and two eternal hobgoblin guards stood behind him. He had come from the Undercity because the record connected to the challenge he did control.

Golden Axe’s thirty-one-hour result had been updated.

Above it, a new stone panel read:

{DEFENSE DUNGEON RECORD (Golden Axe Guild): 34 HOURS, 56 MINUTES}

{WAVES COMPLETED: 10}

{PARTICIPANTS REMAINING AT FAILURE: 17 OF 25}

They continued through the Hall.

New records did not erase failures. Five Knots’ destroyed airship remained displayed beneath their exceptional clear. Matthew’s banner burned continuously beneath the image of Dread Fort. The team that stole the wrong Masquerade target would remain visible until someone accomplished something even stranger.

Adventurers had originally expected the Hall to celebrate winners.

Max had designed it to remember memorable moments.

"It changes how they talk about failure." Anna said.

They stood beneath a moving image of Matthew’s party emerging from the hospital and immediately asking for charcoal.

"They still hate failing." Max replied.

"Who doesn’t. But they no longer act as though nothing happened."

That mattered more on Dread Fort than anywhere else in the first four levels. The guards returned. Its gates closed, its banners restored themselves, and its dead followed the same opening routines. Only the adventurers accumulated anything from one defeat to the next. That was the beauty of instances. It let people try the same scenario over and over again until they got it right.

Maps were one form of progress.

Near the Level Four section, Five Knots studied the combined maps from the qualified parties. Kesh traced a line from the burial grounds to the outer wall. Matthew’s notes showed a chapel on the opposite side.

The two structures shared the same crowned-skull carving. Their floors stood at different elevations, but the burial ground sat high enough for a descending passage to reach beneath the wall. Min had listened to the ruined chapel’s stone during the first reconnaissance and believed part of it sounded hollow.

Matthew offered his notes on the intact chapel. Its bells did not match the military schedule. Undead servants entered through a side door and left through the central avenue. The building remained occupied even when the fortress alarm began.

Five Knots could not know whether that meant the chapel was ignored, protected, or responsible for some part of the response.

All three possibilities were useful. There was no confirmed connection between them. That did not stop Tessa from planning to look.
